Not sure why this caught my attention, but several news sources reported a year after the Collar Bomb robbery that killed the pizza delivery guy wearing the bomb, the woman indicted is “not mentally competent” to stand trial.

I always wonder when I see this used in courts if anyone every thinks, hey, if they committed a crime like this, of course they are “not mentally competent”?

Does that mean that all you need to get off the hook is to be a little out in left field?

Reference Link : Judge: Pa. bank collar-bomb suspect not competent – Yahoo! News

As a note the Collar Bomb Video was very disturbing to see.

This is getting to be an annual event. Almost exactly a year to the day of the last increase, the USPS will be raising the postal rates once again. Of course I guess this should be expected.

Years ago, I would buy a book of stamps just for my monthly payments. Now, I can pay everything except a couple local bills online, which saves me time and money.

One thing I thought was interesting on the official USPS page announcing the postal rates increase, they use the term “Pricing Highlights”, like there is something about an increase that is supposed to impress us or make us happy.

It looks like Hurricane Season as jumped into full gear after a very quiet summer. After living through the nightmare they called Hurricane Katrina, I would never wish for Hurricane Dean to hit the U.S. but we could certainly use some of the rain to cool off the south.

I have lived in Mississippi for 10 years and this summer has been the worst that I can recall. The heat alone is bad, but the lack of rain and the normal Mississippi humidity is enough to make you sick, literally. If you drive a car without air conditioning the air coming in feels like a heater is pointed right at you, so fans are not much help. So here is hoping for some tropical rain without the actual storm front hurting anyone.

This morning another earthquake hit California. There is no doubt that there is more seismic activity recently. Looking at the map on the USGS website indicates a lot of earthquakes are happening. This will certainly give new cause to people like Al Gore to jump up and down and blame it on everyone for not taking care of their earth. Well, I don’t buy it. The earth has been through a lot worse times than we see now, and long before it was over populated, so that can not be the only reason for this type activity.

I do believe we should take better care of our resources, however, I do not think we can control and manipulate the planet based on a small percentage of the people changing how we do things. And especially when most of the people who jump up and down screaming save the planet are themselves not doing the things they support, it really makes it hard to get behind any movement. It’s like listening to John Edwards say he understands poverty, yeah right, sure you do John.

Maybe God (or whatever, or whoever you want to have faith in), has a plan. You want me to believe that it was all created on accident, and then you want me to change it based on some better plan?

Maybe it is just the way it is, or is that just being naive?

This is the kind of news that makes me think I am really out of touch. Is it a big deal? It must be for $5 billion dollars, does it impact me, I don’t know.

If you read up on Rupert Murdoch you may or may not like what you learn. He sounds like a tyrant, but, at the same time I know I like some of the companies that he owns. So it is hard to say what the impact is. For a simple man like me I wonder what drives a 76 year old billionaire to continue buying up anything. You can’t take it with you, and you already have enough to leave your family so they can become the next batch of spoiled rich kids with no regards to working their way through things.

So why?

Is it just the game?

The fact that there is someone doing this does not surprise me, not sure why, but it doesn’t. I lost most interest in professional basketball a few years ago. With the exception of a few players the game just seems to have lost something.

I liken it to boxing, once a great sport that is now in trouble for several reasons.

Not sure how that measures up to other earthquakes in the area, but when things start falling off the shelves, I think it is time to move. Of course, to natives of California, it was probably no big deal, I am just not sure I could handle living in an area that is not about IF an earthquake will hit, but, about when and how bad it will be.

Here is an interesting page showing recent California Earthquakes.

In a move that I must admit really hurts me to the core, Mississippi is losing it’s only Ice Skating rink. The Ice Park is scheduled to lock their doors and turn off the equipment on August 8, 2007.

I moved my family to this area in 1997, and both my daughters started Ice Skating. 10 years later, my oldest daughter is still loving the sport and has begun coaching at the rink. Not only will she be losing her job, she will be losing the sport she has been passionate about since she was 8.

I am not sure who I am more upset with. The owners of the rink, who I believe could never get a handle on how to manage the facility, or the community which continues to show that it probably leads the nation in apathy, especially for a Capitol city.

For 10 years we struggled to finance our daughter to skate and compete. We always managed, but it was hard. We could hardly find people in the area that were willing to support the youth at the rink, and that is extremely sad to see. I would go as far as to say that some of the local sportscasters would not even consider Ice Skating a sport, and that is just simple ignorance.

The Mississippi Figure Skating Club has done well in comparison to other rinks of the same size. Just this past weekend they took 3rd place in a competition in Alabama. We have a group of kids (and parents) that are now left with nothing but a shattered dream.

Come on Mississippi, there has to be someone out there with a solution to this problem and help keep a facility that offers our kids an opportunity to have a safe and fun place to enjoy themselves.
