Drew Carey - Price is Right

Last week there was speculation and rumors flying that Drew Carey would replace Bob Barker on the longest running game show on TV, The Price Is Right.

Well, let’s put that one to rest. Drew made an announcement on David Letterman that he is in fact the new host.

Congratulations to Drew. This should liven up the show a bit, lol.

Tim Donaghy

ESPN has reported that the NBA referee under investigation for gambling on games and fixing the outcomes is Tim Donaghy. The fact that there is someone doing this does not surprise me, not sure why, but it doesn’t. I lost most interest in professional basketball a few years ago. With the exception of a few players the game just seems to have lost something.

I liken it to boxing, once a great sport that is now in trouble for several reasons.

California Earthquake

There was a 4.2 magnitude earthquake this morning in the Oakland - San Francisco Bay area.

Not sure how that measures up to other earthquakes in the area, but when things start falling off the shelves, I think it is time to move. Of course, to natives of California, it was probably no big deal, I am just not sure I could handle living in an area that is not about IF an earthquake will hit, but, about when and how bad it will be.

Here is an interesting page showing recent California Earthquakes.

Mississippi closing only Ice Skating Rink

In a move that I must admit really hurts me to the core, Mississippi is losing it’s only Ice Skating rink. The Ice Park is scheduled to lock their doors and turn off the equipment on August 8, 2007.

I moved my family to this area in 1997, and both my daughters started Ice Skating. 10 years later, my oldest daughter is still loving the sport and has begun coaching at the rink. Not only will she be losing her job, she will be losing the sport she has been passionate about since she was 8.

I am not sure who I am more upset with. The owners of the rink, who I believe could never get a handle on how to manage the facility, or the community which continues to show that it probably leads the nation in apathy, especially for a Capitol city.

For 10 years we struggled to finance our daughter to skate and compete. We always managed, but it was hard. We could hardly find people in the area that were willing to support the youth at the rink, and that is extremely sad to see. I would go as far as to say that some of the local sportscasters would not even consider Ice Skating a sport, and that is just simple ignorance.

The Mississippi Figure Skating Club has done well in comparison to other rinks of the same size. Just this past weekend they took 3rd place in a competition in Alabama. We have a group of kids (and parents) that are now left with nothing but a shattered dream.

Come on Mississippi, there has to be someone out there with a solution to this problem and help keep a facility that offers our kids an opportunity to have a safe and fun place to enjoy themselves.

The Bill Engvall Show

I can’t remember the last time I was actually looking forward to a new show. Now with that said, there is certainly a 50/50 chance it will be a flop. Comedians coming from stand up to television have either been a smash, such as Jerry Seinfeld and Tim Allen, or a total flop, like Jeff Foxworthy.

I am not sure that the reason for their success or failure can totally be put on their shoulders. Although the material seems to wrap around their past routines, it still takes a lot more than just good stand up to translate to a successful show. Like, supporting cast members, production and PR.

Here’s hoping that The Bill Engvall Show is a smash, he has been my favorite comedian for years and I think he has what it takes to make the move to sitcom.

Good luck to Bill Engvall!

The premiere is tonight, Tuesday July 17, 2007 on TBS at 9/8c.

Longest Day Of The Year

It is hard to believe we have reached this time of the year again. It is the official first day of summer, but I can tell you summer has been in full swing for several weeks where I live. I can always tell because there is a constant stream of young people in and out of the house.

I wonder if there has been any studies done on how the Summer Solstice affects Internet usage and Television watching, since the longest day of the year gives everyone more time to stay outside, remember outside?

Hillary Clinton

This hurts, really hurts, but, I have to give credit where credit is due.

It is obvious that Hillary Clinton learned some things from Bill. Former President Bill Clinton understood how to work a crowd and give a speech, and now Hillary shows the rest of the candidates how to connect with the new Internet generation. Her Soprano’s Spoof video was excellent and has certainly led to a lot of attention via the Internet.

Not sure that her selection of a Celine Dion tune was the right choice though.

Young Frankenstein

Watch out, Young Frankenstein is headed to Broadway. And Mel Brooks is producing the new musical!

The original movie was released in 1974 and certainly had a cult following ever since. If I am not mistaken, that was my first sighting of Terri Garr, oh yeah.

Obviously we are in the midst of retro times.
