Finally Back in Texas

After 18 years it is nice to be back in Texas. It is not so much that I did not like South Carolina or Mississippi, but it’s just I like Texas better than any other place.

I have always tried to explain that to people and for some reason it is like everyone either loves Texas, or they hate it. And I just can not understand that. Texas has everything that I would want in a place to live. And no, where I live in North East Texas it is not flat and dry. It is beautiful rolling hills with Pine trees. Much like the rest of the Southeast United States.

And yes, there are parts of Texas that are flat and dry, and believe it or not, there are people who like that climate and scenery!

Now to get out and see some more of Texas!

Christmas Eve in Mississippi

Spending the day watching the weather, something like 30 counties under a Tornado Watch.

To the West it is snowing in Dallas, this could make for an interesting Christmas Holiday here.

Hopefully the Tornado’s will stay away and we can just enjoy the family and food tonight and tomorrow. It is certainly a lot different since the kids are grown up. We are going to see the new Sherlock Holmes movie tomorrow as a family.

Finally Fall Weather in Mississippi

We have had a couple days of great fall temperatures. We could actually walk a couple miles today without having to wait for the sun to go down, lol.

Of course it will probably be back in the 90′s by the end of the week, but we will take what we can get, when we can get it.

2009 AT&T Cotton Bowl

The 2009 AT&T Cotton Bowl creates a little bit of a dilemma for me.

I live in Mississippi, been here for 12 years, but, I grew up in Texas. So with the Ole Miss Rebels taking on the Texas Tech Red Raiders I am going to have to choose an allegiance that could get me in trouble with someone, somewhere, lol.

But, I have to go with Texas, home is home! And besides, I will be watching the game from Texas, so I need to be careful there.

This is one of those times I hope my local friends and neighbors are not reading my blog, lol.

Mule Jail Trail

Now say that fast 3 times.

Enjoyed a nice walk/hike on the Mule Jail Trail yesterday. I have to admit I had never seen or heard of it until my wife pointed it out. It is a small series of Trails on the west side of the Ross Barnett Reservoir damn.

The entrance is not clearly marked but if you stand at the trail head and look west you can see the markers in the distance. Once you get into the trails the markings improve.

The trails are fairly clear and the ground is slightly soft. Definitely looks like a good choice for mountain biking.

Mississippi Weather

This is the time of the year I can actually enjoy the Mississippi weather.

I spent a lot of time in South Texas and I always thought that was the most hot and humid weather there was, until I moved to Mississippi. In July and August the heat and humidity is the worst I have ever felt.

But now, it’s great, the Mississippi weather has turned very nice just in the last couple of weeks.

Now if it will just stay like this for awhile.

Cheapest Gas Prices

It is amazing that 7 miles makes such a difference in gas prices. I drive about 8 miles to work, near my home the gas prices are almost always 15 cents or more above those near my office. The only thing I can attribute it to is that the stations with the lower prices are closer to the Interestate.

This morning the price was done to $3.36. Once again, I never thought I would be happy to pay that much for a gallon of gas. Here is a map link where the price is usually lower than most other stations in this area.

Jackson Metro Area Starbucks Closings

I guess that tells a story within a story, it looks like 4 out of 5 Starbucks within a 10 mile or so radius are closing in the Jackson Metro area. I have been living here for 11 years and I am still amazed at how this city stays alive. Of course in a lot of ways, it doesn’t.

I have 2 teenagers and their list of things to do just keeps shrinking almost daily. About the only thing that they have to do is go to the movies or go swimming at Ross Barnett Reservoir. So let’s see, go see a movie, or go swimming where there are alligators? What a choice.

And the reason? Well, from my perspective it is apathy. People here say they want this or that, but when it comes time to put their money (or time) where their mouth is, the buck stops.

It’s hard to believe this is a Capitol City when you can not even support a skating rink or a Starbucks.

Wake up Jackson !

Fuel and Electricity Price Increases

The local news is reporting an increase in electricity prices in the neighborhood of 28%. I guess it is time to start doing something to help myself since it is obvious that we are going to continue to see prices rise.

Researching Solar Power can be a little depressing. The savings can be fantastic, but the startup costs can be pretty high which in tun makes the return on investment a long road. I have located a couple used panels and I am going to do some research and testing to see how hard it will be to do something that can actually impact the costs of power.

I am also looking for an old Volkswagen Beetle. Not one of the new ones, but the good old classic rear engine type. I have had a couple in the past and they were the best cars I ever owned when it came to fuel mileage and how easy they were to work on.

Lazy Magnolia Beer

My lofty goal for the weekend between all the yard work and working on my Real Estate license is to find a Party Pig of Lazy Magnolia Beer. Especially the Southern Pecan beer.

I am not a big beer drinker, but I love beer that is a little different. After seeing a Mississippi Roads segment on Lazy Magnolia I just have to give it a try, if nothing else to support my local micro brewery.

Mens Straw Hat

Every year about this time, I tell my wife I need a Mens Straw Hat. And every year, usually about the time I pull my Fedora out for winter wearing, I realize I never got my hat. I probably have close to 100 Baseball Caps that I wear year round, but I want something a little different.

So this year will be different. I am officially in the market for a good Straw Hat.

Last time I was in Bass Pro Shop they had a few decent looking hats. The problem was either they had band around the hat I did not like, or they did not have my size. The style I am looking for is basically a Fedora, made of straw. Not some goofy looking floppy straw, but a good lookin hat, just made of straw for the summer heat.

So you have a good place to buy a nice Straw Hat for summer, let me know.

Spring in Mississippi

We are only a week into spring and I am already tired.

We have had some beautiful weather over the last week, the flowers are blooming and the yard work is already causing work.

I spent 2 whole days cutting and mowing. I just love the big lot, until it’s time to mow and trim, lol. Oh yeah, it looks a lot better. But before I could mow, I had to put a new battery, solenoid and carburetor on the riding lawn mower. Of course the bad thing is I don’t mind working on the engine as much as I do all the tree trimming and cutting.

March Madness

So much for my March Madness bracket, thanks to Duke losing to West Virginia in the second round.

Growing up in Texas and now living in Mississippi I know there are a lot of quality southern teams I should be rooting for, but, I have been a Duke fan for 20 years now and it is hard to not pick them each year.

WJTV in Jackson, held a Central Mississippi Blogger Meet-Up on Saturday May 5th. The turn out was very, very disappointing. I was shocked that only 2 bloggers showed up.

Jackson is definitely an apathetic area, but I really thought the bloggers would cross that boundary. How in the world can a blogger be apathetic?

The staff of WJTV was very open and gracious to host this event and did not let the low attendance affect them, and we really appreciate that.

Terry Heaton was a catalyst for this event and his knowledge of both the mainstream media and the blogosphere is incredible. He is one of the few people I have met that truly understands both sides and the changes that are taking place in the media world. His blog is worth a subscription and a trip through his archives can be very educational.

Central Mississippi Blogger Meet Up

On Saturday May 5th, WJTV-TV in Jackson, Mississippi will host the first Central Mississippi Blogger Meet Up.

WJTV-TV in Jackson has graciously agreed to serve as host for a blogger meet-up at 11 o’clock a.m. on Saturday, May 5th. Refreshments will be served and everyone who attends will get the hottest in channel 12 swag, including a T-shirt and a cool mousepad (if the printer can get them there in time).

This is a social event, so come prepared to meet and make new friends. If you know of a local blogger who’s not on the list here, please let me know or feel free to invite them, too. We’d like to meet everybody.

My name is Terry Heaton, and I’ve been blogging since 2002. I’ve participated in blogger meet-ups both globally and at the local level in several communities, including San Francisco, Nashville, Raleigh and Dallas.
