He was an assistant to surgeon Alfred Blalock in Blalock's experimental animal laboratory at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee and later at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. Without any education past high school, Thomas rose above poverty and racism to become a cardiac surgery pioneer and a teacher of operative techniques to many of the country's most prominent surgeons. Vivien Thomas was the first African American without a doctorate degree to perform open heart surgery on a white patient in the United States.

Debbie Walker-Fisher Rodger had his heart surgery in a Catholic Hospital, the best one in our area to get open heart surgery. With the new ruling he would not have been able to get the best care, because we are not Catholic.

Randy Nemetz I have been to the edge and decided crossing over was not my choice. My open heart surgery has given me a second change to do what needs doing. I have found with out the extraodinary skilled medical care provided by the UH cardiac team and Dr. Markowitz that my outcome whould have been a longer recovery and a less defined goals and outcomes. These people are not god but do his work and for that I will always be sincereley in there debt. For those who offerred prays I must say they were felt and quite beneficial in the darkest of my moments. Recovery is by far the hardest mental and physical game I have faced. I will be on the practice fields and sidelines once again this summer and fall. Thank you to all

Buffy Davis Yesterday our friend and housemate, Austin Taylor, suffered a heart attack and drove himself to the VA hospital. The VA decided that the heart needed more than they could provide and moved him to Renown hospital where he will undergo open heart surgery today at 1PM. Please pray for our friend.
