Thanks WLBT and Jack Hobbs
I just wanted to give a big THANKS to WLBT and Jack Hobbs.
We were lucky enough to have WLBT in Jackson interview Danielle as part of their Morning program in preparation of the 2006 Winter Olympics. We did not know what to expect and Jack Hobbs did an outstanding job of making everyone feel at home in front of the camera.
Jack has a knack for having a little fun with his job and it makes it so easy for those who are not used to being in front of the camera. Danielle started out extremely nervous and quickly looked at [...]
Super Bowl, Winter Olympics and NASCAR
Although I did not have a favorite in the Super Bowl, I guess I was rooting for Seattle. However, I am happy to see the Steelers get their victory and Jerome Bettis be able to retire at the top. Pretty ironic seeing how I am a diehard Cowboy fan. Oh well, football is not what it used to be, at least for me.
Now we get on to the start of my favorite sport, Nascar !!
And to fill in some of the missing schedule we have the Winter Olympics to watch. And yes in our house the women’s Figure [...]
Full circle brings Ducks’ Hedican to 1,000th game
It is only fitting that Ducks defenseman Bret Hedican is set to play his 1,000th NHL game Friday night in St. Louis. “This is where it started for me, right here,” Hedican said after Friday’s morning skate at Scottrade Center. “A thousand games later, I’m right back where it started. It’s kind of an eerie thing. It’s taken me full circle.” Hedican made his NHL debut for the Blues, who then played at the old St. Louis Arena, in 1992. He’s also played for the Vancouver Canucks, Florida Panthers
Conker Canker
Warning. This could get nerdy, folks... Sarah's worried. She asks: "Say, you don't know about this thing with the chestnut blight? I'm really worried about the trees in the park, a lot of them seem to be hit by it. Do any scientist types know if it's something that will move on, or will it kill the trees?" The Phantom replies: You alarmed me there, Sarah. So much so that I went out yesterday to check every chestnut tree I could find in the park. Of course it had nothing whatsoever to do wit
Women ski jumpers out because of low participation
VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — Women's ski jumping is being left out of the 2010 Winter Olympics because there are not enough athletes to merit the sport's inclusion, not because of gender discrimination, an International Olympic Committee spokeswoman said Wednesday. A group of women ski jumpers is suing the Vancouver Olympic Organizing Committee and will get a chance to argue in British Columbia Supreme Court on April 20 for their sport to be included. "The IOC would like to stress again
Sports Illustrated & Sexism: Debunking the Myth that Women Can’t Sell

B) As many covers depicting African-American women athletes as the last 16 years [2]. C) More covers depicting women basketball players than in SI’s entire 54 year history. A ring of another kind for Olympic medalist Gretchen Bleiler
Gretchen Bleiler, pictured at left after winning a silver medal in the halfpipe competition at the 2006 Winter Olympics, will be tossing a different kind of bouquet and/or a garter in June. The snowboarder's agent, Amy Stanton, told me Thursday that Bleiler will be married on June 19 "somewhere in Costa Rica" to longtime boyfriend Chris Hotell. Bleiler, a multiple X Games medalist, and Hotell, a marketing specialist at Oakley, became engaged shortly after buying a house together last year i
Tara Wheeler, Local Girl, Beauty Pageant Winner, Miss America Contestant, Star College Hockey Goalie, Nothing To See Here, Move Along
Were I a judge in the Miss America Pageant, a capacity in which I like to think I would be distinctly over-qualified to serve, I would seek to distinguish America's great beauties and talents by their knowledge of . . . hockey. The 2009 Miss America Pageant will be held in January in Las Vegas, and the pageant's representative from Virginia -- Woodbridge's Tara Wheeler -- is poised to answer any hockey question put to her. She's a star goalie, you see. I found out about Tara Wheeler in an odd
Shaun White Is A Uber-Grom Mench?
We feel sorry for sports writers. It’s seems their whole game is spinning babble-filled yarns about nothing so they can justify getting paid to write stories about silliness. USA Today’s action sports specialist Sal Ruibal worked overtime on his recent Shaun White story. Here’s what we mean: Shaun White is a major league mench.. . . The Yiddish word for a person of honor and integrity wasn’t coined with red-headed, board-shredding millionaires in mind, but 22-year-old White has grown into it.
And the Finger-Pointing Gold goes to….
SIDESHOW SAM: The story of the City of Vancouver’s controversial and no-longer-secret $100 million loan to the builders of the 2010 Olympic Village just keeps getting better. Mayor Sam Sullivan yesterday called in the local police to determine who exactly purloined confidential documents about the deal, shared them with the media, and then returned them. The potential suspects are denying any sort of involvement. And as the Vancouver Sun reports, all 10 incumbent councillors, plus the mayor, h
2012! The Republican runners and riders
Only 48 months to go people! Caught up in the jittery throes of the post-election withdrawal syndrome currently afflicting much of the world's political media, we at Times Online have turned our attention to the Next Big One - 2012! We already know Sarah Palin's seeking the nomination - that is if God gives her the go-ahead sometime between now and late 2010 - but who might she be running against? We look at the likely runners and riders. Sarah Palin Now a household name, the telegenic Alaska
Sports Babe of the Day: Sarah Burke
Sports Babe of the Day: Sarah Burke | November 13, 2008 Maybe I’m still on an Summer Olympics kick, but I’m still feeling the hot athletes out there, and I get this bad feeling I don’t know nearly enough of them. So, with that in mind, I went back in time a little bit (yes, I have a time machine, it runs on cheeseburgers, what of it?) to the Winter Olympics, and found Sarah Burke, a free skier from Canada who showed off her, er, assets in FHM way back in 2006. Now I don’t know if that awes
Palin-ology: The Image Reclamation Tour Begins

(AP Photo/Al Grillo) Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is in the midst of a whirlwind media tour aimed at answering her critics and positioning herself for a possible run for president in four years time. By Thursday of this week, Palin will have sat for interviews with Fox News Channel's Greta Van Susteren, NBC
Walrus: Little Girls in Pretty Dresses
From the Walrus, This is Not a Safari Most textiles and clothes are made in Asia, sold to the West, discarded in the West, and donated to charities who have too many dresses to know what to do with them. Then the charities send them to Africa. For example: Fictitious Original Owner: Cindy Showalker’s 8th birthday party in Miami, 1993. Cindy and her mom went shopping at the local strip mall and found this doozy on sale. Cindy really loves the color pink, especially when there’s an iridescen
Laviolette claims wins record among U.S.-born coaches
—After competing in just a dozen NHL games as a player, Peter Laviolette continues to make his mark behind the bench. Laviolette became the all-time winningest American-born coach on Friday after the Carolina Hurricanes rallied for a 2-1 triumph over the Ottawa Senators. The native of Norwood, Massachusetts notched his 240th career victory to move past former Tampa Bay Lightning coach John Tortorella. Three other U.S.-born coaches won at least 200 regular-season games in the NHL - Bob Johnson
Olympic Committee wants the UK to make doping criminal, in time for 2012 Olympics
The International Olympic Committee wants the UK to make athletic doping a criminal offense. And the IOC wants the laws in place before the 2012 London Olympic Games. To the Telegraph: The IOC are growing increasingly frustrated at Britain's refusal to introduce legislation to outlaw the possession, supply and distribution of performance-enhancing drugs. Their stance leaves them out of step with other European countries such as Sweden, France, Italy, Greece and Germany where anti-dopin
Hockey History In New York
The image to the left, taken by Todd Bissonette of the Associated Press, should be remembered by a lot of international hockey historians. It's a common sight to see teams piling on one another after scoring a big goal, but Sweden had extra motivation to do so. Last night in Lake Placid, New York, the Swedish women's hockey team defeated Team Canada for the first time ever in international play by a 2-1 overtime score. Being that this is Hockey Blog In Canada, you might expect me to brush it off
IOC pressure Great Britain to change doping laws ahead of London Olympics 2012
The IOC are growing increasingly frustrated at Britain’s refusal to introduce legislation to outlaw the possession, supply and distribution of performance-enhancing drugs. Their stance leaves them out of step with other European countries such as Sweden, France, Italy, Greece and Germany where anti-doping laws mean athletes and their suppliers can go to jail. Arne Ljungqvist, the chairman of the IOC’s medical commission, said he would be pressing for a change in the British law, which would b
London, Sochi Olympics feel pinch but no panic from downturn
Stocks markets and oil prices may dip and dive, but Olympic organizers with preparations under way for three games in the next six years aren’t breaking a sweat. The reasons? Time and television money. The global economic downturn has squeezed private financing for venues that will be a part of London’s 2012 Summer Games and Sochi’s 2014 winter edition, but with brisk ticket sales for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics and most of the sponsors locked in, the IOC can afford to hold off making new deal
The 2010 Winter Olympics Are Coming … Soon Enough
[ Click here if gallery isn’t working or you want to download images? ] The Flash Player and a browser with Javascript support are needed.. The FIS competition season is underway. That means regimented contests run by skiers for snowboarders. This winter isn’t specifically about who goes to the Olympics, it’s about earning spots for team USA. I caught up with U.S. Snowboard Team Assistant Halfpipe Coach Ricky Bower to find out what, if anything, has changed going into snowboarding’s fourth O
Olympics shut out Hockey Canada logo
Because it’s all about the love of sports…. Canada will likely have to ditch its familiar logo for its hockey teams at the 2010 Winter Olympics. The Hockey Canada logo, which features a player skating through a maple leaf, has been worn for the past three Winter Games. And unless Hockey Canada can get an exemption from the International Olympic Committee, Canada’s hockey teams at the Vancouver Games will have a new look. The issue stems from an IOC rule that forbids national sports federati
