Van Halen Tour Cancelled?

Rumors are that the Van Halen tour is being canceled due to Eddie Van Halen having issues. What a shame, I really thought this tour might help Eddie, especially with his son Wolfgang playing bass. I know when I saw them back in the late eighties it was Michael Anthony and David Lee Roth who had the issues, but back then Eddie was still spot on.
Hopefully Eddie can get the help he needs. It always makes you wonder “what if”.
What if Eddie could pull himself out of his problems and finish his career in the way Eric Clapton has?
If you’re [...]

Guitar Gods - The Cover Art

Here’s the cover art for one of my latest mixes - a four disc box-set called Guitar Gods. A compilation like this invites furrowed brows, lists of corrections, and plenty of harrumphing from all corners. Strike up the chorus: “But what about ____________?” There were dozens more guitarists that ideally would have been included, but four discs seemed like enough, and the line had to be drawn somewhere. World B. Furr (sometime commenter on this blog) was kind enough to collaborate on this mix wit

Wild 2, Penguins 1 - 11-18-08

PREGAME You are reading live from a freezing night at Pittsburgh. We pulled out the big overcoat for the first time for our trek up to Mellon Arena this evening. It's not a good night to be outside. It's one of those nights that a Pittsburgh television station would take advantage of to scare the tar out of old people with their Super Mega Snow and Ice Destruction Squad weather reports. The ice: -Not that the ice at Mellon Arena has been an issue as of late, but we have a feeling there are

Grails Guitarist Discusses Creating Album Art for Doomsdayer’s Holiday

Doomsdayer’s Holiday is the new release by Portland’s instrumental rock band Grails. Fusing Indian music, 1970s film noir, and psychedelic sounds into heavy acoustic and electric rock, Grails is a wonderful anomaly. I recently spoke with guitarist Alex Hall, who created the artwork for the album. How did you go about creating the artwork for Doomsdayer’s Holiday? All of the album art belongs to the found-collage realm. It’s an incredibly powerful medium to work in. I’m not an illustrator, s

That Was The Show That Was: Frightened Rabbit | Middle East

For the first time out of several that we've seen the band perform, Frightened Rabbit Sunday night appeared, well, a little frightened. And band fronter Scott Hutchison seemed almost willing to concede the performance a failure from the onset. What the Selkirk, Scotland-based quartet didn't count on was the fact that the young crowd was ready to love anything it did, even the occasionally tentative or forced. All was forgiven by the grateful crowd even before Mr. Hutchison began offering apologi

Icons of Rock: Alex Van Halen

Yes, you all know Eddie Van Halen from his blistering virtuoso guitar solos and his creation of the legendary finger tapping. Of course, he’s influenced such guitarists as Dave Mustaine, Kirk Hammett, and ‘Dimebag’ Darrell (R.I.P.); however, many often fail to recognize the other Van Halen brother, Alex, for his place in rock and roll history. Alex Van Halen belongs in the same category as Eddie in regards to his dominance of the double bass drum. While Eddie was known for his speed with his “

Did pop star Robbie Williams buy this 13,638-square-foot mansion in Beverly Hills, CA’s Beverly Park neighborhood?

In Luxist’s October 12 Sunday Real Estate Round-up that Robbie Williams has signed a contract to buy a 13,638-square-foot mansion in Beverly Hills, Calif.’s Beverly Park neighborhood that had been on the market for $23,000,000. That may be true, although public records don’t yet bear it out (likely because even if such a deal has closed, the document hasn’t yet been recorded with Los Angeles County). However, assuming that the Sun is accurate (and this is a shaky assumption — it *is* a Londo

Beeline Interview: The Diamond’s Dave & Alex Pollack

Dave & Alex have something special. The Diamond. It’s the right mix of good beer, a chill environment, and unpretentious company. Conversations flow freely from behind the bar to those sitting around the bar to even those playing shuffleboard. It feels seamless and open and never feels too crowded despite the crowds that do come through. They recently participated in Craft Beer Week, but Dave’s been guiding beer tastings for years. They’re green. They’ve always got good tasty beer. And, I h

PREGAME Apologies for the delays folks. We had (imagine this) computer problems. We made that walk up to the arena from the Steel Plaza station. It was kind of weird considering we haven't done it for four months. That walk isn't going to seem so nice come December. It's also kind of weird not seeing the big television set up out in front of the arena: We spotted a few Tampa Bay fans hanging out in front of arena: The rink always looks weird without advertisements on the boards. I

WARNING: This is not your sweet, warm-fuzzy-feeling kinda post. If you're not in the mood to read it, then please come back another day.Oh my gosh! Is it just me or is everyone else getting just as tired of the mud-slinging, dirty-laundry search going on in these elections? No. I know it's like this in every election, but this one has been going on for almost 2 years now! It's crazy! You can't watch national news now without hearing even the most minute details about Sarah Palin's personal life.

EDDIE VAN PALIN

You’d almost expect Eddie Van Halen to be a staunch Republican. Look at the facts: he lives in California, is rich, is a dick, and he and his woman both do work in the magical world of porn, which means giving a big thumbs up to the McCain/Palin ticket would be just hypocritical enough to [...]

Van Halen Alumni Sammy Hagar Says "Hell Yes" To McCain Use of "Right Now"

When the Van Halen brothers issued their statement that John McCain's campaign didn't have permission to use the song "Right Now," I had a feeling that Sammy Hagar (who lives in Marin County, CA) wouldn't feel the same way.And I was correct (Eddie Van Halen Reaches Out To Sammy Hagar Over The GOP's Use Of Their Song "Right Now")"I got goosebumps from it — my fur went up," says the band’s ex-frontman, Sammy Hagar, who co-wrote and sang the song — and said he’d be "just as happy" if Obama played i

Joe’s Jams Top Ten Van Halen Songs

Joe’s Jams Top Ten Van Halen Songs Tuesday, 16 September 2008 Granted, this is just one guy’s opinion, but here it is, nonetheless: From: 411mania.com: Joe’s Jams 09.16.08: Top Ten Van Halen Songs Posted by Joe Rivett on 09.16.2008 Based on this list, David Lee Roth was clearly better than Sammy Hagar… 10.
