Justice Scalia Denies Flipping Off Reporter
Now here’s news. When I heard about this it made me lose sleep. Was it really true, oh the horror. Did he really use that gesture on a reporter? Could you imagine anyone getting so upset with a member of the media that they would sink so low?
Oh wait, this just in, it was the old Italian gesture of dismissal not the American gesture of ……

Korea’s Reputation–The Little Things
Noticed two very interesting things in Seoul, South Korea this week while visiting. They both impressed me and enhanced Korea’s reputation in my mind. First, as I was going through immigration to have my passport reviewed, I noticed the little counter where people sometimes have to fill out their landing cards because they forgot to do it on the plane or filled it out in pencil. One usually sees pens set aside in this area for people to fill out their personal information. In the Inchon air
All My Funds
They say there’s a broken heart for every light on Broadway and at these prices I’m not surprised. I went to the theater the other night see in Arthur Miller’s “All My Sons” and there was so much drama going on that it rolled off the stage and into my life. The production stars John Lithgow, Dianne Wiest, Patrick Wilson and…Katie Holmes. Yes, that Katie Holmes, Tom Cruise’s wife, blah, blah, yak, yak, you know the drill. “All My Sons” opened on Broadway in 1947, back when the average weekly s
Guest blogger: Edie Ramer!
Today, I get to welcome an absolutely wonderful lady to the Bunch–Edie Ramer. I had the pleasure of first meeting Edie a few years ago when I stumbled across her group blog, MAGICAL MUSINGS. Love that blog–it is always positive and always has such great posts! Edie has recently finaled in the American Title V Contest (yay, Edie!), and if you haven’t voted, please rush over and vote. The voting for the first round ends tomorrow. Also, I wanted to note that one person who comments on this post
FLIGHT LIVE BLOG: Ugggghhhhhh Edition
Surprise, surprise! I am currently on an airplane flying to New York, and with the advent of in-flight Internet courtesy of Gogo Wireless, I'm able to truly report to you all with a live blog. This is actually the second time I've used this service, and I'm still a bit giddy about the notion of checking my email while cruising high above the mountains of California. I LOVE TECHNOLOGY. What I don't love, however, are unexpected kinks in what should be a relatively straightforward flight. The
You don't say (and now I wish I didn't)
UPDATE:Well, never mind then--that's what I get for being clever. I decide to finally let slip with the suspicion that President-Elect Obama's floating of Senator Clinton is really a masterful political ploy the same day the news comes out that it's official and she's set to take it. It's not a bad thing to be wrong. I said in the original post and comments that it would be "win-win" and no loser if the President-Elect offered and Senator Clinton declined, but that wasn't strictly true: you can
A time to give thanks
By Congressman Bob Goodlatte Recently the eyes of the country have been focused on the hotly contested Presidential election and our economic downturn, but it is important to remember that as a nation, we have many reasons to give thanks. Each year, across Virginia and throughout the country, Americans set aside a special day to express gratitude for the many blessings we have received. In 1789 President George Washington proclaimed Thursday, November 26th of that year, a day of national Thank
Great Scenes: "The Deer Hunter"
This has to rank as one of the most riveting scenes in movie history: The Russian roulette sequence in The Deer Hunter (1978). Setting: Vietnam War. Two captured American soldiers, surrounded by Vietnamese guards, forced to take turns putting a pistol to their heads and pulling the trigger, while the guards place bets on who's going to die. Meanwhile, a third soldier in locked in a floating cage, fighting exhaustion and rats -- a worthy 'ticking clock.' INT. THATCHED HUT - HEAVY RAIN - DAY MER
Ignorance is Bliss, Isn't It?
Eric Bogosian, writer, actor, host of the National Book Awards ceremony, takes a political tone in his remarks: “As far I know, Barack Obama is a reader,”... “hopefully we will have a president who reads history and hopefully is not condemned to repeat it.” Perhaps if Eric got his nose out of the NY Times and The Nation now and then, he'd realize that our current President is quite well read, thank you very much: Bush is famous for reading history books. He and Karl Rove supposedly had a book-r
Congress Set to Approve $467.35 bailout of Mariquita Lopez
I saw this OLD woman while I was getting off the train today. (Sorry Mariquita, you're old) She was DEFINITELY over 75 years old, and she was working for the Metro News handing out those shitty free papers in 10 degree weather. I don't know what her real name is - it's definitely not Mariquita because she was very white, probably Irish or Itallian. Black and Hispanic names are just much funnier than white ones, so I had to use it for the headline. Sorry. As I was coming up the station stair
Arrogance: Detroit Execs Fly Their Private Jets To Ask For A Public Bailout
I usually don't fall for this type of "bash the CEOs," politics - but this week's PR mishap with the Detroit execs is too revealing of the underlying problems with the automakers to pass up a comment. Rep. Brad Sherman, a Democrat from California, asked the three CEOs to "raise their hand if they flew here commercial." "Let the record show, no hands went up," Sherman said. "Second, I'm going to ask you to raise your hand if you are planning to sell your jet in place now and fly back commercial
Remember to Look Down in Amman
Recently I sat down for a dual interview with rival New York blogger, Elizabeth Vicary. After she interviewed me about blogging for the US Chess League, I interviewed her. Here is our conversation.JR: I understand you have a job teaching chess. Really? How do you get paid? Are you a regular teacher on salary or like a tutor?EV: I’m a regular teacher; I work for the NYC Board of Education. I’ve been teaching at IS 318, a public junior high school in Brooklyn for ten years now. When I started ther
Shake a Leg
November 20, 2008 at 9:11 pm (art modeling, drawing) (Art, art modeling, drawing) The current issue (Fall 2008) of American Artist Drawing Magazine features an excellent article written by my dear friend Dan Gheno. It discusses the challenges faced by artists in drawing legs, and Dan, as always, offers solutions, tips, and detailed descriptions on this efficient, yet beautiful, part of human anatomy. Our glorious gams! Brilliantly engineered, ingeniously designed for their
Capping Greenhouse Gases: Here's Why Not
Husband David has an op-ed in today's Washington Times as well as other papers on what a cap on greenhouse gas emissions would due to our economy. An excerpt: When our economic bus is teetering at the edge of a cliff, it's a bad time to throw on some extra weight. Yet government-mandated restrictions on carbon emissions would do precisely that, adding enormous additional weight to an economy already reeling. This additional weight shouldn't just be thrown from the bus -- it should be thrown un
WHY ???GENERATION WE??? KIDS INSIST ON DESIGNING THEIR OWN TATTOOS
Generation We kids are artists, chess players, musicians, singers, designers, athletes, dancers, actors, playwrights, fashion innovators, tech-savvy inventors, engineers, space travelers, environmental activists, civil rights activists, and scholars. They are forward thinking, technologically gifted (i.e., connected), intensely socially integrated, and ethnically diverse. Many of them just helped elect the first African American president in our nation???s history. They are roughly between the
The Inspiring Tenacity of Jessica Biel
Italian glossy, ‘A,’ hit newsstands yesterday and revealed an exclusive interview with the ravishing Jessica Biel, who was recently in Rome for the release of her latest movie, Easy Virtue. Wearing a silk cream shirt and a pair of gabardine trousers, the interviewer noted how she removed her heels and casually threw them on a chair nearby–the gesture of a fabulously down-to-earth damsel who, despite her fame and boyfriend, has remained true to herself and, above all, true to her dreams. So
CEO Pay, Roskam Inquires
I've been watching the hearings, hearing the testimony and pulling for the bridge loan. Then there was this tidbit, reported by Dana Milbank in the Washington Post: So it was hard to feel sorry for the executives when Rep. Peter Roskam (R-Ill.), late in the hearing, reminded them again that "the symbolism of the private jet is difficult," and mischievously asked the witnesses whether, in another symbolic gesture, they would be willing to work for $1 a year, as Nardelli has offered to do. "I
Thank You Auto Zone!
I’ve been reading a lot lately about the decline of good customer service. I’ve experienced plenty of poor customer service myself and certainly gripe about it. Recently I received some excellent customer service and want to pass that along as well. Some time ago Auto Zone built a shiny new store in my little town. Auto Zone sells auto parts, something my mechanic normally takes care of for me, so I hadn’t ever shopped there. I turned my rear windshield wiper on as I was driving down the road
Obama poised to rebrand America
(CNN) — President-elect Barack Obama is poised to restore the United States’ image in the international community, but experts say the president-elect must show the world that his actions will live up to his rhetoric. People in Kisumu, Kenya, celebrate the election of Barack Obama. Receiving a warm welcome is not the same as maintaining one, and Obama has a lot of work to do to improve the U.S. brand. America’s image has declined in nearly every region of the world in recent years,
Marines Reach Out to Iraqi Kids
Posted by MK on November 20, 2008 MNF-Iraq - When people typically think of Marines on a combat patrol in Iraq, the last thing that comes to mind is the image of fluffy stuffed animals. However, with the help of a grass-roots organization in the United States, the Marines of 2nd Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 5, spread American goodwill to the children here recently. The Marines distributed more than a hundred stuffed animals while patrolling the streets of this impover
They don't really make distinctions...
(Poster by, of course, Oleg Volk.)With the "Fudd" discussions going on here and there about the gun blogosphere, I was reminded of this poster Oleg did a while back...(Plus it was a good damned excuse to post a picture of a Finnish Mosin, which just makes me all warm and fuzzy inside.)Anyhow, I'm torn on the term "Fudd". Now, I hunt when I can; heck, one of my big dreams is an African safari. Although that is not my primary reason for owning firearms, it is definitely an ancillary one. I don't s
