Singulair

It is being reported in the News that the FDA is investigating Singulair and the reports of mood changes, suicidal behavior in people taking Singulair.
Why did this get my attention?
Well, if you have listened to any of the drug commercials these days. It is absolutely ridiculous. Most of them sound like the side effects are worse than the condition you are taking them for. A couple even mention the risk of cancer.
Now, why would you take Singulair, which is an asthma medication, if the side effects sounded worse than the asthma?
I realize some medicines have side effects that are bad, [...]

Asthma Inhaler

My wife went to get her asthma inhaler and was told by the pharmacist that her particular asthma inhaler was no longer being prescribed and they would get her a new one. No big deal I guess, except the reason they gave.
Seems the asthma inhaler she has been using for 10 years is bad for the environment!
Environment, hey, what about her lungs? She has been breathing this stuff in for 10 years?
I gotta look into this, something just ain’t right here.

FSD History Flashback: November 21, 1976

Hello, I'm David Funk, and welcome to this edition of FSD History Flashback for November 21. Today, I'm reposting an entry about a movie that not only changed the lives of those in the movie, but gave America one of it's most popular fictional heroes ever. Many of you probably read this on Sporting News or wherever else I've posted it, but I've added some more facts and numbers to this post. Enjoy. The movie Rocky was released in theaters on November 21, 1976. This movie not only grabbed the

Inhaled Insulin; Medical Breakthrough for Diabetes Patients

For the first time since insulin started being developed to treat diabetes 80 years ago, a new medical breakthrough in insulin administration will allow adult diabetics to deliver their insulin a very different way. Exubera is rapid acting meal time insulin that was recently approved by the FDA. It comes is powdered form and can be inhaled through the mouth. Exubera will not completely replace insulin shots (some diabetics may still need shots of long acting insulin), but it will definitely

Babyhaler For My Daughter's Nocturnal Asthma

Last wednesday, I bought a babyhaler for my child as advised by her pedia doctor. Her doctor said that what she has is nocturnal asthma and that is why she needs it so she can finally get rid of her cough. She has been coughing but mostly at night and at the wee hours of the morning. So this babyhaler she has to use until she gets used to the inhaler. Hopefully with the use of this, we can finally say.. bye bye cough! I just want her to get well. Good thing the doctor also gave me a discount ca

International News Roundup: Anarchy in the UK and Pirates

If Only we Could Chalk it up to Anarchy in the UK (and not Human Nature) British court sentenced 16-year-old Andrew Smith to life in prison. The teenager and his 18-year-old friend, Jason Bolton, kicked Asaf Mahmood Ahmed so hard and so many times that the 28-year-old father of three had an asthma attack while lying in a pool of his own blood. Smith left the scene but came back to find Ahmed was reaching for his inhaler while still on the ground. Noticing the movement, Smith shoved the inhale

Just when things start looking up…

… life decides to throw you a curve ball. Yesterday, I found myself smiling and happy about several wonderful developments in my household - if only for a brief moment. The first being my youngest son, GG, sleeping through the night for the third night in a row! This is truly an amazing and wonderful thing, especially if you have read about my frustration with his sleep habits here and here. I admit that I now have a secret weapon which works like a charm, but I’m not going to tell (at least

Nothing's Ever Simple

I seem to be having a run of...how can I describe them...awkward moments. You know, the sort that cause you to think "Oh, no, not again." They're normally accompanied by a resigned sigh and some hairbrained attempt at a solution. In fact a better term would probably be, "problem situations." Take this weekend for instance. ExpatOwl flew off to Europe on Friday morning, so it was back to the one-woman-show again. The Little Guy had a soccer tournament all weekend (his first). To add to the fun,

It’s not me, it’s you: Breaking up with your playdate

You guys may not know this about me, but I hate conflict and confrontation. It makes me ever so uncomfortable. It’s like watching reality TV to me — itchy, like my skin’s on wrong. Oh, I’ll stand up for myself. I’m not exactly a pushover. Ish. But I will try my damndest to find some other way to work things out rather than get all conflicty. Avoidance works. As does humor. And moving house. So, what do I get in my inbox to mull over for Ask Gypsy? Conflict. And not just conflict, parental conf

Not Getting Any Better

I called my doctor today to complain about not getting any better from the antibiotic and inhaler he gave me. I am miserable every night. I've been wheezing a lot when I inhale deeply and triggers incessant coughing. But last night was quite different. I got the same wheezing sound even while breathing regularly and I coughed almost all night, I couldn't sleep. It was like having asthma attacks, I was really gasping for air. I stacked up two pillows so I can breathe comfortably. I really wish th

jmarie3:Really bad picture quality—I don’t have a decent camera, only a bad phone one. He had made me a try with applesauce and seltzer water one day when I wasn’t feeling well, along with a note that said ”I love you Mom, sined (how he spells signed) Alex” chimp-shitbitch-kittenscrazy:He is beautiful, thank you.  You’re son is beautiful as well..  Asthma is hard, huh.  We should e-mail and compare notes.  Gabrial is at about 5 attacks a day.  It is killing me.  I cannot imagine how it must

QUANTUM OF SOULLESS: Habs 3 - Blues 2 (so-so) - Our Inaugural 2 in 1 Game and Movie Review

#fullpost{display:inline;}This is a new feature here on FHF, where we combine a commentary about the previous night’s game along with a review of a movie we have recently seen. Fresh on today’s menu: The Habs’ win over the St-Louis Blues and the new 007 flick, Quantum of Solace. The Game: SoullessHow unbelievably kick-a-frying-pan-into-my-forehead boring. I’ve been more captivated by dust particles reflecting off light bulbs on my night table. It starts with Andy McDonalds breaking his leg. I’m lo

Twitter Updates from the Severe Asthma Workshop at the 2008 Annual Meeting of American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (ACAAI)

Twitter is a microblogging service where people answer the question "What are you doing?" via 140-character messages from their cellphone, laptop or desktop. The service can also be used to collect notes and ideas or to report from a medical conference. I have already explored the same communication channel while attending the NEJM Horizons Conference in October and the reports were generally met with approval by both the meeting participants and bloggers from around the world. This experience e

More Frustration

I’ve written a few times in the last month about my annoying, persistent cough. It usually comes on like a cold, and then it hangs on just about forever it seems. I often can’t sleep well. I feel tired during the day. I decided that it was time to do something about it. Yep, I wrote all this yesterday and probably a couple other times. What’s new, you’re wondering? Nothing new, but I do have a reminder as to why I need to continue pursuing a cause and/or treatment. K. Poor guy is coughing toni

Running Day 1

I went this morning with Charlotte and Matt's ipod in tow. I'm starting off slow; I don't want to burn myself out.I did 10 minutes of warm up walking. Then I did 1 minute of running, 1 minute of walking, and rotated this circuit for 10 minutes. Followed by 5 minutes of cool down.Afterward I had pretty bad wheezing and shortness of breath. I've currently completely cooled down and I'm still wheezing with a bad chesty cough. I googled this and found something called "athlete asthma", which is brou

Air Conditioning And Asthma Posted in November 14th, 2008 Category:Heating and Air Conditioning I’m an asthma sufferer and for most of my life I have had to deal with my allergies to cats, dogs, dust mites and pollen triggering my asthma which sets off my wheezy chest and leaves me reaching for the ventoline inhaler once again. Saying that, I do have my asthma under control and [...]

My Cold Turned For the Worst

I have not been feeling very well for over a week now, in fact I was diagnosed with bronchitis today. I knew it wouldn't be good news when I went to see my doctor. My cough was not getting any better and I was miserable at night gasping for air like having asthma attacks. My doctor prescribed antibiotics for my bronchial infection and inhaler to help me with my 'asthma' like attacks. I felt a little relief but I still have a long way to go. I still continue to take over-the-counter cough syrup a
