Instamatic Karma by May Pang

May Pang is getting a lot of press with her new book Instamatic Karma. I am sure a lot of people do not even know who May Pang is. She was the woman that John Lennon spent 18 months with in the middle of his marriage to Yoko Ono. That period in Lennon’s life has been referred to as his “Lost Weekend”. The new book is of photographs from that period.
This type of News always amazes me. 27 years after John Lennon was killed a book of photographs can create such a buzz.

Vatican Forgives Lennon's Controversial Jesus Slam

Better late than never, I suppose, especially if you're a religious person who loves The Beatles. But it happened at last: On Saturday, the Vatican's official newspaper L'Osservatore Romano finally rethought John Lennon's infamous 1966 claim that his band was "more popular than Jesus." And, yea, it was all good. In a curious twist, the way-past-due change of heart and mind came on the 40th anniversary of The White Album's 1968 release. Look Vatican, we don't want to tell you how to do your

Cheap Trick salutes “Sgt. Pepper” with heart and soul

Every note, sound and lyric of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band is so indelibly imprinted in people’s heads that the thought of performing it live must be a little daunting. If that was the case last night at Ruth Eckerd Hall, Cheap Trick did not let on. They nailed it. The band had help. A keyboardist and second guitarist augmented the group. Behind them on a riser, 24 members of the Florida Orchestra filled out the sound, playing the string and horn parts with accuracy and feeling. Ju

The Dallas Morning News predictably runs several stories in remembrance of the assassination of John F. Kennedy forty-five years ago today. There is an article noting how, understandably after nearly half a century, fewer and fewer eyewitnesses to the event now survive; an article about the man who gave Lee Harvey Oswald, rifle and all, a ride to work that day; and an editorial celebrating, if that is the right word, the fact that the Texas School Book Depository building continues to stand now

YouTube’d memories: Blue Suede Shoes

I mentioned a few times in this series the notion of my own very first cassette tape. In fact, there were two of them. Both were recorded for me by my Uncle, who owned a Sharp dual-deck stereo recorder - a rarity in those days. While he was aware of what I would have liked to hear on those tapes, he decided to only partially satisfy my requests and, in addition, to give me a taste of things that I was not truly aware of. The first tape had Modern Talking on one side (I certainly wanted that) a

LOS ANGELES — Dr Pepper is making good on its promise of free soda now that the release of Guns N’ Roses’ “Chinese Democracy” is a reality. The soft-drink maker said in March that it would give a free soda to everyone in America if the album dropped in 2008. “Chinese Democracy,” infamously delayed since recording began in 1994, goes on sale Sunday. The Fireman: “Electric Arguments”

It probably wasn’t planned, but it’s fitting just the same that Paul McCartney is releasing his third Fireman album– along with collaborator/producer Youth– just a couple of days after The White Album turned forty. The Beatles’ seminal double album arrived at a time when fans and critics were beginning to think they had Paul all figured out– he was, conventional wisdom held, the schmaltzy, sentimental softy in the group, more enamored with twee recreations of British dancehall and traditiona

McCartney became Gladys Jenkins for new album: BollySite

McCartney became Gladys Jenkins for new album: The Beatles legend Sir Paul McCartney underwent an extraordinary transformation for his new album 'Electric Arguments' and pretended to be Gladys Jenkins during the recordings. "We decided to go undercover, to do whatever we wanted. That way, when yo

Forty years on, McCartney wants the world to hear ‘lost’ Beatles epic

George Harrison said it was too avant-garde. Now Sir Paul says the time has come to release 1967’s ‘Carnival of Light’ Vanessa Thorpe, arts and media correspondent (The Observer) For Beatles fans across the world it has gained near mythical status. The 14-minute improvised track called ‘Carnival of Light’ was recorded in 1967 and played just once in public. It was never released because three of the Fab Four thought it too adventurous. The track, a jumble of shrieks and psychedelic effec

She said, "Your post makes me so happy I was raised by hippies! There was a simple "moderation in lifestyle through education". I never have really avoided foods....I just grew up loving the heck out of whole wheat bread with tomatoes slices, cheese and raisins (toss in the oven 'til cheese melts). Macca denies Eleanor Rigby-”1911 document”

Paul McCartney says that the story from last week claiming that Eleanor Rigby is a real person is rubbish. “Eleanor Rigby is a totally fictitious character that I made up,” McCartney said in a statement to global news agency Agence France-Presse. “If someone wants to spend money buying a document to prove a fictitious character exists, that’s fine with me.” Last week, a person claimed that in 1990, she was sent a document by Paul McCartney stating that Eleanor Rigby was a hospital scullery

Beatles bigger than Jesus? Vatican paper: Just a Lennon joke!

PARIS (AFP) – The Vatican’s daily newspaper marked the 40th anniversary of the “White Album” on Friday by dismissing as a “quip” John Lennon’s notorious claim that the Beatles were bigger than Jesus Christ. The legendary double album — which came out on November 22, 1968 at the height of the Fab Four’s influence and popularity — was “a magical musical anthology” from a band “full of talent,” L’Osservatore Romano said. Rather inevitably, its lengthy article kicked off with Lennon’s remark
