Killion: 49ers’ Singletary, Martz play good cop, bad cop
Back in Mike Singletary’s playing days, NFL quarterbacks faced no tougher presence than the Chicago linebacker. But on Singletary’s team these days, the quarterback punisher is Mike Martz. Offensive coordinator Martz relentlessly pressures his quarterback. And then head coach Singletary picks him up and gives him a hug. It’s an interesting dynamic evolving at the 49ers: a good-cop, bad-cop relationship among Singletary, Martz and Shaun Hill. So far, it’s producing encouraging results. Hill
Jim Mattox, RIP
In 1982, Ronald Reagan’s first mid-term election, a Democratic wave swept the state. Republicans had mounted a major challenge to the D’s control of most statewide offices (governor excepted), and U.S. senator Lloyd Bentsen and lieutenant governor Bill Hobby used their muscle to build the best Democratic organization Texas had seen since Lyndon Johnson’s heyday. The price of oil was falling, and the threat of a recession hung over the state and the nation. With the Bentsen/Hobby organization be

Michael Binger Wins WSOPC Harvey’s Lake Tahoe
After battling his way back from an 8:1 chip disadvantage during heads-up action, professional poker player and 2006 World Series of Poker Main Event final table member Michael Binger was able to come back to capture the title at the World Series of Poker Circuit’s latest stop at Harvey’s Lake Tahoe. While the final table provided some exciting play, the action on Saturday for Day Two was almost as exciting. Day One chip leader Chris Dombrowski was able to make it to the money with the lead an
Bada-Bing!: Binger Takes Tahoe
With better than $5.6 million in career tournament earnings, a good healthy portion of which comes from his third-place finish in the biggest tournament in poker's history, it feels strange to say, but Michael Binger won his first major title at WSOPC Tahoe tonight. When things got going in front of the raucous Harvey's crowd just after 1 p.m. PST, Binger came in as the favorite with the big $400k stack. But this was no Jamie Gold-style wire-to-wire act for the 2006 Main Event final tablist. In
McCarthy must adjust to situation
Green Bay - Mike McCarthy has had a fairly easy go of it in his first 2 1/2 seasons as coach of the Green Bay Packers . He inherited a disheartened but adequately talented cast of players from Mike Sherman. Expectations were minimal after Sherman’s 4-12 clinker in 2005. And the locker room - make that the entire organization - was willing to accept anyone with open arms if the new man proved approachable in the wake of Sherman’s sullen swan song. McCarthy performed so admirably that in
Separation of religion and state
Separation of religion and state Separation of church and state is a political andlegal doctrine that government and religiousinstitutions are to be kept separate and independent from each other.[1] The term most often refers to the combination of two principles:secularity of government and freedom of religious exercise.[2] The phrase separation of church and state is generally traced to the letter written by Thomas Jefferson in 1802 to the Danbury Baptists, in which he referred to the First A

Why YTB, Read What Fortune Magazine and others Say!
Becoming your own boss by starting a part time or full time home based business offers several benefits not often available to those who follow the more conventional employment routes. In fact small businesses make up the backbone of America and may be the best way for most of us to achieve the American Dream. Here’s how Fortune magazine put it in a recent cover story: “Forget the paycheck; your W-2 days are over. It’s a 1099 world now.” Across the country and around the world, legions o
Douglas Harlan RIP
I note with sadness the passing of Douglas Sloan Harlan, 65, of San Antonio, a longtime friend dating back to our college days at Rice University. Doug was a staunch Republican in the days when the GOP was struggling to establish itself as a force in this state. In 1972 he ran for Congress on a shoestring budget against O. C. Fisher, a fourteen-term Democratic committee chairman. This race was one of the first indications that the dominance of the rural conservative Democrats in Texas politics
List Of Best Movies Ever… It’s Not 10 Though… It’s 200… Part 3
Part 1 Part 2 Part 4 101. The Last Unicorn (1982. Jules Bass & Arthur Rankin Jr) It’s surprising how few people have seen this. Wonderful animation, and a great rendition of the story. 1982 was pretty early for big names doing the voices of animated features, at least a whole cast of them. But, Rankin and Bass (and you’ve got to love getting them on your list) had been pulling in some of the biggest names in entertainment for years to do voices for them. 102. Last Year at Mar

excerpts from the WSJ articles on Hoover
From the essay by Russell Roberts....People ask me if the current mess feels like 1929. But the right comparison is 1932, when Herbert Hoover was desperately trying anything, anything at all, to get the economy going. The stock market had crashed. The economy was starting to follow it down. So what did Hoover and his fellow policy makers do? In 1930, Congress passed a massive tariff increase, in hopes of protecting American jobs. Hoover signed it. But it simply accelerated the economy's slide. T

An Interview with Lisa Snellings

Leona Aglukkaq is a fascinating choice as Health Minister, with the potential to get the government focused on challenges in Inuit and aboriginal communities that it's long neglected. She's also a huge leap of faith, since being a minister in Nunavut is a l
