NASCAR Accidents

I wonder how many people watch Nascar just for the accidents?
A little research into the top searches for Nascar reveals a large majority of searches revolve around Nascar crashes.
Since the Michael McDowell accident during qualifying last week at Texas Motor Speedway the traffic to view the video has been enormous. And the film has been on every major network and cable news program available.
Since Nascar has standardized their cars on the COT (Car of Tomorrow) platform the accidents seem to be going down and certainly the safety has gone up. Nascar safety was already a big concern, but since the [...]

Jump to the full entry & travel map Skardu, Pakistan Day 9. Concordia - Ali Camp 5000m Whilst we (and Iqbal) were away Julien heard Habibe singing. He asked what it was about. It turns out, he was pining for his girlfriend. Bear in mind he is 19, married, has a kid and works for his wife's big brother. Anyway. We set off South towards the Vigne glacier in the snow with the leader of the rescue team as I porters and guide were not ready.. As Vigne means Vineyard in French we were perhaps

Living well with the money I make tomorrow

ATLANTA — The more I read about the financial crisis, the more I wonder. Why does the economy freeze when we can’t borrow money?  Why do we need to make credit available in order to make it work again?  But wasn’t easy credit that got us in this fix? All these questions reminded me of my first encounter with credit in the early 1990s. I had just arrived in America from mostly cash-based Bulgaria,a former Communist country in a painful market transition. I had never borrowed money or owned a

Sprawl, Y’All (Or a Case for Why Sprawl Creates Bigger Government)

credit: mikesoron This article originally appeared in a back page editorial of Folio Weekly. Citation: Michael E. Lewyn. “Sprawl, Y’All” Folio Weekly Sep. 2008: 63-63 Sprawl means bigger government, because once a suburb starts to grow, developers will come swooping down, pleading for that suburb to tax and spend to “accommodate” new development …. Sprawl means today’s suburbs become tomorrow’s slums, as the middle class moves farther out. In my experience, the sort of people who worry mos

More Than I Can Bear

One of my long time best friends called me the other night with a horrible pain in her heart. She needed someone to talk to. Rumor had it her daughter might be suicidal and she was trapped on a business trip until the next evening. Her husband was home handling the situation, but she wasn’t going to be okay until she could hold her daughter close. She needed to look deep into her daughter’s eyes to get a ‘read’ on what was really going on inside her mind. Until she could really sit down and t

Lost in Kowloon - Kowloon, Hong Kong, Hong Kong

Jump to the full entry & travel map Kowloon, Hong Kong, Hong Kong Hello Everyone, I've made it safely to Hong Kong and I'm loving the energy here.  It's a crazy place.  I'm staying in Kowloon which is just north of Hong Kong Island in a guesthouse which is infamous for the building in which it is located:  Mirador Mansion.  Mirador Mansion and it's neighbour, Chungking mansion are old, rundown, tenement buildings with apartments (or closets) stacked one on top of anot

Building the layers in your writing

A recent email from someone has inspired me to begin sharing a bit more on building craft on this blog. Typically I try to focus on marketing writing and reflections on the writer's life, but this person's comment took me back to my early writing days. I remembered when I couldn't seem to get the hang of creating a scene. It felt flat without any real interaction between the place, the character and the reader. Then I read a book where the exact same moment was lived through the eyes of three d

Day 23 - Grimsby, England, United Kingdom

Jump to the full entry & travel map Grimsby, England, United Kingdom I was woken at 8.30 this morning by the banging and clanging of the construction that had started up again across the road. I headed downstairs for breakfast and chatted to Sophie on MSN. At 9am mum headed out for the day with Bernadette and Aunty Pat while I got dressed and packed my bag for the day. Since our trip to London didn't end up happening, when I was ready I got into the car and dad drove me down to Sophie's w

I want this Sonett!

I’m going to rob a bank tomorrow. Why? My dream collectable Saab has come up for sale - a 1973 Saab Sonett III. Brian L, knowing my fetish for Sonetts, sent me this ad from Craigslist. This Sonett is for sale in the San Francisco area. It’s white with a tan interior, has had a recent engine rebuild (only 1,000km ago) and it’s for sale for only $2,500 so I only need to rob a small bank!! The photos aren’t very big and there’s none of the interior, nor is there any comment as to the condition

Erie PA News and Events for Columbus Day–Monday, October 13, 2008

Today is Columbus Day, a day when we celebrate the anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ arrival in the Americas on October 12, 1492.  Can you name the three ships Columbus led to the Americas?  Courts, public schools, many banks, and the Post Office will be closed today, so no Netflix discs for you. Congrats to Greg Ropp and everyone at the Eerie Horror Festival for another great event - one that draws in visitors from all over the country and in turn bringing revenue to downtown. Ed Palatell

Reader Question: How control pre-baby clutter?

Reader Zoe recently sent us the following question: I’m expecting my first baby in December and I’m already worried about the impending cloud of clutter. My husband is unfortunately not devoted to de-cluttering like I am, so I suspect there will be struggles even between the two of us, not to mention the grandparents! I would love to see a post from you guys about how to deal with/prevent baby clutter before the baby even arrives. Has anyone created a list of baby clutter rules, for instance?

New Music Sampler — Nikka Costa, Lucinda Williams, Keane

New Music Sampler — Nikka Costa, Lucinda Williams, Keane by Erik Deatherage | October 13, 2008 at 7:30 am Nikka Costa — Pebble to a Pearl Would it hurt a singer’s career to have Ol’ Blue Eyes as your godfather or a father who arranged for legends such as Tony Bennett and Dinah Washington? Not when you’re Nikka Costa, whose 2001 album, Everybody Got Their Something, became a minor hit in the States. Costa’s funk and gospel backbone allows the soulful blood to pump through 12 tracks that

Continuing With Caunes

I'll now show you more of the village of Caunes-Minervois where we stayed. Caunes is actually the region's capital and is located on the far western edge of the Minervois. It's a quiet, medieval village with lots of honey-color stone. Here's Ray standing on one of the bridges. And here's a view from the bridge. The center of the village is dominated by the hulking abbey. The crypt holds the foundation of the original fourth-century church, and some eleventh-century pavement has been uncov

Hell Yeah!!!

Side note to Alix:  I have been agreeing to anything and everything I like the idea of with a `Hell Yeah!` and no one gets it except for Patrick. I have yet to write it in a note, but still. Ok back to the topic! As yesterday was our last day of freedom (if a Sunday before a work day could ever be referred to as a day of freedom) we sat down and pulled out the bank and credit card statements from the trip. Now was the moment of truth (or an hour of it). We had planned on 30 dollars a day for

What’s On TV Tonight ~ Monday 13th October

Another action packed telly night tonight with the start of the much touted ‘murder week’ on Corrie being one of my highlights tonight… I don’t get out much! Here’s what else is on offer… Strictly Come Dancing - It Takes Two, BBC2, 6.30pm ~ Claudia Winkleman hosts the daily fanzine which tonight features an interview with the recently ousted couple and footage of rehearsals. Craig Revel Horwood drops in to discuss the judges decision. Emmerdale, ITV1, 7pm ~ Lily tries to con the factor

Let The Money Series Begin! Take A Look At Our Family Budget

First things first - transparency.I am going to share with you all (with my hubby's permission) our budget. Why am I going to do this? We live on a tight budget and I figure it may help out someone out there to see that "it" can be done. Plus, if you happen to make pretty good money, but you live on a budget like ours, think of all the money you can save/give/pay off debt! So, without further adieu, I present our family budget:We are a family of four (including two toddlers and a preggo!) and we

The Post Mortem

Don't feel too bad Raiders fans, Lovie Smith could be your coach. That gut-wrenching, kick in the groin style of losing is typically reserved for the Raiders. Tom Cable and the Raiders, however, took it easy on their fans by rolling over and soiling themselves like the beaten dogs that they are. Rightfully retaking their spot in the NFL’s dog house. The Raiders lack of effort and other bewilderment of actually having to play a game of football is one of the biggest atrocities to the game. Pacma

I won't be able to write long, so let me give you the highlights and try to upload some pictures.  Friday morning we depart at 5am with myself, Donny, Nadine, Matt, Kieth and Andy (oth

I'm not Nellie Bly (or, Let Me Hold Your Coat)

When I was a girl, I spent hours curled up on my bed, reading biographies of famous women. I read about Helen Keller, and Marie Curie, and Elizabeth I. And I read about Nellie Bly, the nineteenth-century reporter who became most famous for writing a long investigative piece entitled "Ten Days in a Mad-House." Bly wrote the piece after spending, well, ten days in a mad house. She didn't go in as a reporter. She reasoned, correctly, that if she presented herself as a member of the press, the
