Dale Jr. Moving On

It was good to see Dale Earnhardt, Jr. make a decision about his future. I was not the biggest Dale Earnhardt fan, at least not at first. But, I would love to see Junior join Richard Childress and drive the black # 3 Chevrolet that his dad made so famous.
Junior is different than most. He has incredible skill, a clear head, great vision and an outstanding attitude. If you watch and listen to him race, it is hard not to at least respect him as one of the best in Nascar today.
My picks for the team Dale Jr. will join, [...]

More Retirees Than Workers In Domestic Car Companies

In this Chart of the Day, we see graphically why the Big 3 domestic car companies are struggling so much.  They have more retirees than active workers.  That trend will continue as the auto companies downsize.  Clearly, this is situation cannot be maintained for long.  As an analogy, does anyone think that Social Security could be maintained with four people on Social Security for every worker paying in?  Currently, we have about three paying in for every retiree on Social Security. Hillary and the Ghost of Albright

Some interesting context when envisioning Hillary at State. She is extremely close to her husband's last Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright. Many reliable accounts ID her as the person who convinced her husband to name Albright to the job in 1997. In 1996 the Times had a very entertaining account of how the two bonded on a trip to Prague: Under a warm late-afternoon sun, two middle-aged American women in smart pants suits slip out of their Prague hotel and stroll across Old Town Square. Why the giants of Detroit have stumbled.

The rhetoric around the big three bailout is virulent. The finger pointing is intense. And most of it, total poppycock. The New York Times had an article this morning about the Chevy Volt electric car. One car is all GM, a global auto manufacturer, is betting the whole company on one car. An overpriced one at that- 10 years late to market. Read: The Chevrolet Volt, a plug-in hybrid, will not arrive in showrooms until late 2010. But it is already straining under the weight of an entire company

Shocks

New Car Tracker: 11.21.08 The L.A. auto show brought a host of new models to the table for us to track, as well as a few updated release dates. Ford’s shared-platform trio of the Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan and Lincoln MKZ will go on sale in spring 2009 alongside hybrid versions of the Fusion and Milan. Also seen at the show were the Nissan Cube and Kia Soul, which will arrive in early 2009 and spring 2009, respectively. As always, we remind our readers that we don’t list models that are rum

Ha ha, there’s a term for this in online advertising, when...

Ha ha, there’s a term for this in online advertising, when ads from a company show up right next to a story about a rival company.  In this case, a local NY/NJ/CT Honda dealer has scored this little coup in a New York Times story about the Chevrolet Volt. And, what a coincidence - they’re both silver cars!

WHICH ADVERTISING IS BETTER? GM VOLT OR THE EV1 (the father of Volt)

In ads that ran this week in the US, GM said the Volt - the plug in car it is betting its future on - is : "not just a car. It’s a vision of our future.” Another claimed that the vehicle would “completely reinvent the automotive industry.” The NY Times reported today from the LA Automobile show that the Chevrolet Volt, a plug-in hybrid, will not arrive in showrooms until late 2010. But is already straining under the weight of an entire company. The Volt is expected to go on sale in late 2010.

Fisker Karma will get GM's 2.0-liter turbo 4-cylinder

Posted on 11.22.2008 12:30 by Simona Alina Filed under: Fisker | sedan | hybrid cars | fisker karma Fisker's Karma is planned as a plug-in hybrid that can have its batteries recharged through a gas-powered engine - much like the Chevrolet Volt. Now Fisker is getting closer to the Volt by using a General Motors engine for recharges. But unlike the Volt, which has a 1.4-liter unit planned, Fisker will use a much more powerful 2.0-liter turbocharged unit. The Karma is out to give itself a per

Iowa’s First Lady Caught Violating Anti-Smoking Law

Iowa’s First Lady was caught smoking in a state-owned vehicle. Mari Culver admitted to violating the state law that took place on July 1. The law prohibits smoking in public places including state vehicles used by more than one person. Culver’s husband signed the law into effect April 15. A reporter from the Des Moines Register recognized Culver in a black Chevrolet Tahoe with the window rolled down and her hand with a cigarette in it. A state trooper was driving. Violating the anti-smoking la

Global car giants bet heavily on China

Global automakers may be hurting from a worldwide slump in sales but in China, they see a bright beacon of hope. GM is staring at the abyss in Detroit and is pleading for a US government bailout, but at the 6th Guangzhou International Auto Show which opened Wednesday, the US carmaker and its local joint ventures are exhibiting 24 models - with the Chevrolet Cruze, Buick Enclave and Cadillac CTS-V making their China debut. “The vehicles on display are part of a product offensive that will se

Saving General Motors?

It plans to sell only 10,000 Volts in the car’s first year, or less than the number Prius cars sold by Toyota in October alone. And the Volt, roughly the size of a small family sedan, will cost around $15,000 more than a Prius.

G.M. Pins Hopes on a Plug-In Car, 2 Years Off

By MICHELINE MAYNARD NYT DETROIT — The Chevrolet Volt, a plug-in hybrid, will not arrive in showrooms until late 2010. But it is already straining under the weight of an entire company. Executives at General Motors, the largest and apparently the most imperiled of the three American car companies, are using the Volt as the centerpiece of their case to a skeptical Congress that their business plan for a turnaround is strong, and that a federal bailout would be a good investment in G.M.’s futur

Marshall Auerback here: The issue of GM cannot be divorced from the broader issue of health care. Companies like Honda operate out of countries that made health and retirement benefits a national responsibility. And the perennially high price of gasoline, a product of high gas taxes in virtually all other highly developed countries, has ensured a steady market for their smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles. There’s no reason not to treat U.S. car companies, and car owners, the same way. So w

Automaker Assitance Disagreements Blur Line Between Red And Blue

Enlarge Photo Enlarge Photo Free-market economists cry foul at huge bailouts and public assistance for ailing companies like GM, Ford, and Chrysler. And yet the very much Republican Bush Administration strongly supports assistance, depicting the Democrats’ lack of movement to help the Big Three as “mindless opposition.” Adding to the confusion, the Dems initially supported the automaker bailout, but are now growing reticent and adding terms, conditions, and stipulations to any assitance. So

GM selling Saab assets in Sweden?

As part of their efforts to gain as much liquidity as possible, GM have looked into selling off unrequired property, leasing some of it back in necessary. There were reports last month about them looking for a financial arrangement of some description with their own corporate headquarters in Detroit. UK publication Property Week has a story today about GM doing some property deals and most notably for us, some of them are in Sweden: JLL (Jones Lang LaSalle) confirmed that its corporate finan
