Sick of Party Politics
Am I the only person sick of Party politics?
Yes, I think one party is better than the other, and I probably agree with 70 - 80% of their platform. But the rhetoric and bashing is driving me crazy. It seems nothing is about what people want anymore, it’s about which party can smear, attack and destroy the other side.
I would like to see one day, just one, where no one in the United States says the words Republican or Democrat. If you think someone is making a bad decision or is doing something stupid, then say that, without using the [...]
National Security and the 2008 Election
Today NSN hosted its monthly member lunch. I don't always make it to these things, but the allure of both free staff lunches (provided by Taylor Gourmet) and guest speaker Matt Yglesias made this event hard to resist. Matt stunned the wonk crowd with his dazzling, sophisticated grasp of power point, making some insightful observations about foreign policy, domestic politics, new media, and the intersection of all three. Lunch was good too. Matt said something that I hadn't heard before on ho
Recession proof Golf
While golf has long been perceived as recession proof, a few involved in the sport are discovering otherwise. The L.P.G.A. is brought together in this realization by those who make golf clubs and golf balls, retailers who sell them and even instructors of the game. At present, top PGA Tour officials state they have a full schedule and expect to make no cuts in prize money next year. Even if a bankrupt sponsor were pressured to pull out in 2009, the PGA Tour has a large following of sponsors who
Left Watch: Center for American Progress
Left Watch: Center for American Progress by Jon Henke | November 19, 2008 at 6:42 PM in Center for American Progress It's important for the Right to be aware of what the Left is doing. Few, if any, on the Left are doing it better than the Center for American Progress... [T]he Center for American Progress has become in just five years an intellectual wellspring for Democratic policy proposals, including many that are shaping the agenda of the new Obama administration. Much as the Herita
Free Hoder?
An Iranian newspaper is reporting that Hossein Derakshan - “Hoder” - is under arrest for susicion of espionage on behalf of the state of Israel. This is likely a result of a trip Hossein made to Israel in 2006, travelling on a Canadian passport. At that point in his career, Hossein’s blog was strongly aligned with Iranian reformers, and he was interested in getting a picture of Israel, a state that most Iranians can’t travel to. In recent years, his writings have become highly critical of the U
Obama Fund Fatherhood Now
Now that the Democrats are running DC and most of Lansing we need to begin to communicate the need for DHS/CAPTA/VAWA/Title IV legislative change. Looking at what has been proposed during the election we must strike quickly to get our reform message in their ears. Obama's message of the need for fathers and families needs to be directed towards legislative changes that actually encourage the states to keep families intact and both parents significantly involved with their children. Here is Oba
For the record
During the campaign I wrote a few times about the bewildering behavior of the many feminists who attacked Sarah Palin in astonishingly sexist (and dishonest) terms — and did so in the name of feminism. The situation was appalling to many of us who have been lifelong feminists and who care deeply about the continuation of the movement. As the editor of The New Agenda website,* I have lost track of the number of letters from women around the country saying that “feminism is dead,” or that femin
Why I'll Never Vote For Mitt Romney
During the Republican nomination process in 2008, there were three guys I generally liked for president – John McCain, Rudy Giuliani and Fred Thompson, with a slight advantage to Giuliani. I liked the three guys and believe each would be a decent president. At first, I thought Mitt Romney could be in the group. Unfortunately, it turns out that he was a flip-flopper on a number of items, especially social issues. I could not trust him. Well, Mitt did it again today. Romney said Detroit's Big 3
Where I Take On a Nobel Prize Winner
I want to talk about the proposed auto bailout again in a macro context. As I concluded in my previous post, I am very hesitant to support the bailout because of the huge decrease in demand for cars, something that was started before the last few months and that initial evidence suggests will continue regardless of credit conditions. I believe that the credit crunch is merely the first symptom of underlying economic woes, not the driving force, and at some point will get around to putting tog
The New York Times blows the bark beetle story
The so-called paper of record ran a major story Tuesday on the country’s most infamous climate-driven pest, “Bark Beetles Kill Millions of Acres of Trees in West.” Great story, other than neglecting to mention climate change. It’d be like an article on an outbreak of avian flu that left out any discussion of birds So we have the national “liberal” media, like the NYT and NBC, blowing this story, while the local, conservative media get it right, see “conservative San Diego Union knows climate
How Conservatives Can Combat Lib Media: Talent and Optics
What follows is an excerpt of my November 19 op-ed in the Washington Times. You can find the full article here. The two stars of the recent election were Barack Obama and "mainstream media" bias. In this media climate, the terms "Republican" and "conservative" have been relegated to epithet status. My Democratic-leaning friends argue, fairly, I think, that if the media are so biased, why have Republican presidents sat in the Oval Office for nearly 20 of the last 28 years? The answer is that w
History Made — First Korean Victoria’s Secret Model
The Chosun Ilbo breathlessly brings us the news that Korean-Chinese Jarah Mariano, who hails from Hawaii, has become the first Victoria’s Secret model of Korean descent. According to what is, lest we forget, the nation’s leading conservative newspaper, “with her 171 centimeter, 34-24-24 body she combines eastern and western sexuality”.

The Political Education of Chris Ward
The Political Education of Chris Ward Filed under: Conservative Thought, GOP News — Dave Lambert @ 6:06 pm See the story at… http://www.domemagazine.com/features/nov08/cover1108.html I’ve known Chris Ward for many years. He’s a fine young man who should not give up on a future in public service. Chris Ward’s story has two lessons that every elected official should keep in mind. First, the allure of power is sometimes so strong that politicians will allow it to destroy their familie
eHarmony to Offer Gay Dating Service After Settlement
eHarmony will create a new website for gays and lesbians as part of a settlement with a gay man in New Jersey, Reuters reports. The company will launch the new same-sex dating site called "Compatible Partners," a dating service with "male seeking a male" or "female seeking a female" options. The settlement was the result of a discrimination complaint filed by Eric McKinley against eHarmony in 2005, which will be dismissed under the settlement agreement. eHarmony was founded in 2000 by evan

United Kingdom: Conservative “Feminists” Attack Sex Workers
United Kingdom: Conservative “Feminists” Attack Sex Workers Posted by: Craig Young In New Zealand, we debated the decriminalisation of sex work back in 2001-2003. It more or less ended with the attainment of that objective. Predictably, a Christian Right petition failed to secure signatures that would have led to a citizens referendum against decriminalisation, and restrictive local laws have been struck down in court. Since then, public animosity has more or less died down. Unfortunately
Leaks
Names of members of the British National Party (BNP), along with children and relatives, have been leaked. Said members don't think that's fair. Neither do I. MK has a good synopsis of and reaction to the stated views of the BNP. Update: KG is angry. Very angry.
The Road to Financial Ruin: Unrestrained Government Spending
By: Axel_Merk Nov 19, 2008 When just about all economists agree, should we rejoice or be scared? During the Weimar Republic, economists at the Reichsbank argued that printing money to finance a war was “exogenous” to the economy and thus not inflationary. Hyperinflation in the ensuing years proved them wrong. We tend to think we are so much smarter today. Economists know how to run regression models; in the absence of a historic precedent, some economists know how to draw shifting supply and
The Mac Could Be Back
Reports surfaced today that John McCain has told his advisors that he plans on running for re-election to his Senate seat in 2010 and has started a PAC to help the effort. This confirms that McCain is not going to recede into the shadows for two years and retire; on the contrary, it seems to indicate the possibility that he will use his gravitas and heft - still quite considerable - to serve as the deal-maker and powerbroker that has been his role since he got into national politics. Should
