Did the ACLU Strike Again?

The National Security Agency’s Terrorist Surveillance Program has been struck down by U.S. District Judge Anna Diggs Taylor. And you can bet it is in large part to the ACLU. Now this will help our country continue to be open to terrorists and there is not a lot we will be able to do about it. I am almost more afraid of the ACLU and the left wing than I am of the terrorists.

Reasons to Start a Home-Based Business

by business card secrets Starting your own business has never been more popular. Why, despite the obvious risks, are so many people drawn to starting businesses of their own? Their reasons are as varied as the individuals themselves, but the most common include the following. To make more money It’s a well-known saying, but nonetheless true: nobody ever got rich working for someone else. If you run your own business, the profits will go into your pockets rather than those of someone else (who

More on Waxman and Tech

As Cord mentioned earlier, Henry Waxman has been named incoming Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, of which the Subcommittee on Telecommunications and the Internet is a part. In his role, Waxman is likely to play an influential role in future tech policy fights involving issues such as universal broadband access and network neutrality. While Waxman has laudably defended civil liberties on many occasions, his record on telecommunications lawmaking is quite troubling. Waxman

Sri Lanka: Censoring the web and Internet

ICT for Peacebuilding (ICT4Peace) discusses about a proposed law in Sri Lanka restricting private TV broadcasting: “disturbingly, the proposed regulations are a significant challenge to all bloggers in Sri Lanka, since they seek to hold accountable all ISPs for the qualitative nature of the content transmitted, accessed and produced using their networks and further, makes no distinction between IP TV (e.g. SLT’s PeoTV) and TV/televisual content over the web and Internet (e.g. YouTube, Vimeo).”

The steady erosion of freedom

Permalink Comments (0) Trackbacks (0) November 19, 2008 Blunt racism Prince George’s County, MD has approved a measure banning the sale of individual cigars. Stores must instead sell them in packs of at least five. But there are exceptions: Tobacco stores that specialize in cigar sales, and often sell high-end cigars for as much as $5 apiece or more, are excluded from the legislation’s restrictions, as are other locations that are sometimes age-restricted, including golf courses, fr

Cambodia's new intellectuals

Post Election Hate Running Rampant

Last week, seven teenagers went out on a modern-day lynching because they had an urge “to beat up some Mexicans.” Marcello Lucero, an Ecuadorian immigrant, was killed in what Suffolk Police are calling a hate crime. He was murdered at the hands of a gang of seven high school students in Patchogue, New York, looking for Latinos to target, according to testimony they gave to the police after they were arrested. That was the subject of today’s conference call hosted by the Workplace Project, Long

Hey, Trudy Jo, Laura I, Penelope Varner, Cindy McMann, Mindy McMann, etc. Thanks!

You know, it is really something that a long-term reader here (and my previous two blogs) is willing to devote so much time and energy each day to commenting. Who would think that someone would enjoy my blog so much that they would go to such lengths to make up new screen names and new email addresses for literally years (and lately weekly) just to try to leave a variety of comments on my little blog and keep me entertained. I’m also really impressed by how fortunate you are. In this economy,

Conclusion of 'A Clockwork Orange' Has Important Social Implications

Given the importance of the issue of personal responsibility in current cultural and social issues, I'm reproducing here, in edited form, my analysis of the conclusion of Anthony Burgess's A Clockwork Orange, from our discussion in the Comments section of my recent article on the book. As I note in this analysis, the last chapter of the book is crucial in refuting ultilitarian arguments for statism and its destuctive effect on individual freedom. The last chapter of Burgess's A Clockwork Orang

Game Journal - “Digging Fallout 3″

Game Journal - “Digging Fallout 3″ November 20th, 2008 by benjaminroffman I’m not about 22 hours into Fallout 3 and I gotta say I’m loving it. There are so many things I dig about the game and a few less then stellar parts of it, both of which I’ll probably talk about over the next few blogs. Today, however I want to talk about how Fallout 3 portrays freedom and choice. In so many games the dialog you choose and actions you do can be different but all end you up at the same point. Even KOTOR,

Web Mobs and Proposition 8

I am Canadian so you can probably guess how I would have voted if I could have on Proposition 8 (the California constitutional amendment to define marriage as only between a man and a woman). My views are not the point of this post. I am very concerned about what is playing out - online and in real life between the two sides of this issues following the passage of the amendment. First of all we live in a democracy - the people of California voted for it - albeit by a small percentage but that

Rav Elyashiv is afraid; we should be too.

Rav Shalom Yosef Elyashiv recently told Rabbi Noach Weinberg of Aish HaTorah that world Jewry faces a threat as great as that it confronted in the midst of the Holocaust. (That widespread report was confirmed to me by senior officials at Aish HaTorah.) Rav Elyashiv was referring preeminently to the threat of a nuclear Iran, though no doubt the simultaneous threat to the citadels of Torah learning in Eretz Yisrael and abroad as a consequence of the world financial crisis only magnifies the conce

Afghan girl says acid attack won’t stop her lessons

Another disgusting pathetic display of the way women are treated in islam. I recall a few months back, some imbecile liberal was commenting on how the Taliban were pro-education and claimed it was the Coalition Forces bombing the girls’ schools in Afghanistan. I wonder if that same liberal efftard will point the blame for this at us as well. KABUL (Reuters) - A victim of an acid attack on schoolgirls in Afghanistan said Saturday she was determined to stay in school and finish her education eve

Regulating citizens who use public transit

Why would anyone complain about a program that offers protection against a presumed terrorist threat? In Washington, DC’s public transit Metrorail system, a new program that searches bags of random Metrorail customers has been in process for the past month. On Oct. 27 Metro announced that it would begin pulling aside random passenger to search bags in an effort to thwart terrorist attacks. The non-profit organization Flex Your Rights has issued a “Citizens Guide” to refusal on its web site

UPDATED: Conversation About Prop 8 and Race at GLBT Center was Teeniest, Tiniest, Ever-So-Slightest Bit Productive

Before we get to the nitty-gritty, we just want to make sure that everyone knows that tonight's Prop 8 town hall at the Veteran's Building has been postponed indefinitely. We'll let you know if there's an update on that. UPDATE! We've just received tons of new information about upcoming events. It's all pasted after the jump. Everybody got it? Okay, good. Now, on to the details: We'd say between 75 and 100 people showed up for the panel discussion "Prop 8 and Race: What's Next?" The title o
