Mississippi Genealogy

Several years ago this site was dedicated to Mississippi Genealogy Research. I did not realize until recently that several search engines are still listing us under this heading. Not exactly sure why this old data has not been updated, but, if you do a Google search for Mississippi Genealogy you will find us listed with the heading of “Offering services to help with Genealogy Research in Mississippi.”
If you are here based on that information, we still may be able to help you. I am attempting to find the old pages and see if we can repost that data somewhere for [...]

Restoring and Beautifying Photos the Photofiddle Way

One of my favorite hobbies is working on my family’s genealogy; because it was also my uncle’s and grandmother’s hobby before me, I have access to a treasure trove of photographs, historical documents, family charts and other paraphernalia that they and others had collected. What’s not in my personal files is kept at the Angelo State University library in their West Texas Collection, where it is easily shared with me and any other interested familial historians. I guess because I have always h

Four SourceWriter tips

Legacy Family Tree 7.0 introduced the SourceWriter, a template driven sourcing system that makes it easy for you to select the correct input screen so that you enter all the pieces needed to correctly cite any source of information in the thousands of formats that exist for them. The information you enter is correctly and precisely formatted to match the genealogy industry standards for source citations. Here are a few tips to answer questions recently asked on our mailing list. Tip #1 - Fain

As I mentioned briefly in my previous post, my oldest sister has been working away at our family genealogy. She sent me a link to the genealogy site she has been using to gather the data together, and in just a few minutes of looking through it I've discovered a treasure trove of family information and photos that I didn't know existed. For instance, this photo: Yup, that's me and Mum. Sometime in late 1964, or early 1965. Probably 1965, given that I look older than a few months old. Later

55th Carnival of Genealogy is posted - Show and Tell

You can spend several hours reading about the fascinating, intriguing, strange and/or peculiar items that 49 genea-bloggers brought to Jasia's Creative Gene blog-room this past two weeks for Show and Tell. The posts for the 55th Carnival of Genealogy are here! What a great collection of, um, er, items! Read them all! My own post was a conglomeration of everything, since I cannot find the time to post about only one thing - see Show and Tell - the treasures . The next Carnival of Genealogy will

55th Edition, Carnival of Genealogy is Posted

Jasia at Creative Gene has once again outdone herself with a spectacular round-up for the Carnival of Genealogy. This time, the topic was "Show and Tell," and 49 bloggers contributed 50 terrific articles. You won't want to miss this outstanding read! My entry is My Mother's Mysterious Hope Chest, in which I show and tell - with a little help from my daughter - about the hope chest I inherited after my mother died. The topic for the next edition of the Carnival of Genealogy will be "10...

Having Fun with Genealogy – A Look at Genealogical Humor

By Carolyn L. Barkley I’m a firm believer that genealogy should be fun. If we lose sight of the enjoyment of solving puzzles and discovering new information, genealogy simply becomes work. To me having fun while researching takes many forms: talking to myself (statements like “well, it’s about time, there he is!”), pumping my fist enthusiastically into the air when the elusive bit is found on an almost unreadable microfilm reel, and finding that three hours have passed in the blink of an eye.

Obama: A rabbi in the family

Tracing the Tribe does not usually comment on political matters, but this was just too good to pass up - and it does connect to Jewish genealogy. While attending the Chicago 2008 international Jewish genealogy conference, several conference-goers attended Shabbat services at Beth Shalom B’nai Zaken Ethiopian Hebrew Congregation in southwest Chicago, headed by Rabbi Capers Funnye. It was

Virtual genealogy speakers at local societies

DearMYRTLE OFFERS 'VIRTUAL' SPEAKING OPTIONS A proposal for bringing down the cost of high-quality speakers for local genealogy society meetings and seminars. DearREADERS, Ol' Myrt here came to Philly early to attend the APG (Association of Professional Genealogists) Professional Management Conference, a pre-FGS Conference option for genealogy professionals. My goals over the next few years include expanding the scope of DearMYRTLE and I have gleaned ideas by taking classes and networking with

Capturing Memories: Your Family History in Photographs

DearREADERS, Ol' Myrt is reporting from the 2008 FGS (Federation of Genealogical Societies) conference in Philly. Lots of great classes & new offerings from vendors. This morning, after my podcast interview with Ancestry.com’s Tim Sullivan, Lou Szucs handed me a review copy of Maureen Taylor’s Capturing Memories: Your Family History in Photographs. Ol’ Myrt previously blogged about Maureen's genealogy detective work, and interviewed her on a recent podcast: NBC Today Show: family history o
