Jackson Mississippi on Google Street View

Google announced yesterday that Jackson, MS is one of 37 new areas that have been added to their Street View Maps.
To celebrate Street View’s one year birthday, I am very happy to announce we are bringing Street View to 37 (you heard me - 37!) new areas and we have expanded coverage in 15 of our existing areas. All in all, this effectively doubles our coverage. Link : Street View turns 1, keeps on growing
Between this and the new Real Estate maps there is a lot to take in on Google Maps for the Jackson area. Now you can easily [...]

Another Look at the Global Economy, the American and Global Recession, and the Situation in Detroit

I'm in class at the moment, on the hook to discuss a trust-related case in a few minutes' time, but realized that I haven't put much up today (in all honesty, I'm working on something for next week, a big story). Anyway, a classmate of mine, a financial adviser paying just about as much attention as I was, forwarded this article to me and, at first glance, it looks like it presents some interesting arguments and insights as to possibilities for the United States, using the Chinese as an example

Portland’s first cycle track proposed for Cully

A cross-section detail of proposed design of NE Cully Street shows 8 1/2-foot wide cycle-track. Nearly two years ago, we wondered whether it was time to try physically separated bike lanes. Now, the City of Portland is poised to build its first-ever, Copenhagen-style traffic lane for bicycles — otherwise known as a cycle track. The cycle track is part of the Cully Boulevard Improvement Project, a multi-agency, $5.4 million project that will completely rebuild NE Cully Blvd. from NE Prescott

The Big Three and Detroit

With the automakers in decline, Detroit, home to the big three, would be hardest hit if the government lets the companies fall into bankruptcy. As headquarter buildings, like GM’s massive structure, rise above the city, most of Detroit shows the signs of hard economic times. An estimated one in three Detroiters now live in poverty, making the city the poorest large city in America. As Michigan’s unemployment rate in October rose to 9.3 percent, a 16-year high, lines grew at soup kitchens and bu

Considering the Storm’s impressive display, it would be criminal for media performance t

Case Study: Word of Mouth for a Bar & Grill

Case Study: Eddies Trackside Bar & Grill Idea Wanted: Word-of-mouth ideas to drive food sales. Monroe, Washington is a tale of two towns. Like so many small communities across America, city leaders like to show off shiny new growth that comes in the form of development from big business brands. Such is the case in Monroe, Washington, a city of 16,000 people 30 miles northeast of Seattle. Monroe’s future is different than its past. Founded in the 1880’s with the arrival of the Great North

Google Rat-view

The Rat!, I could have sworn we covered this here but I can’t find it in the archives. Perhaps I saw it on DCist or another local blog. Anyway, I was just looking for something in Georgetown in Google Earth and saw the big rat. Poor carpenter’s union - I can’t quite read the name of the business they’re protesting in front of from the street view. The last time we discussed street view someone pointed out that the pictures aren’t all taken on the same day. I wonder how many other places the

Google Street View

In reply to Groceries and Meats: 1919: Just tried looking up the address on Google Streetview and there are some similar looking buildings in the area although they don't seem identical. They seem to have more steps up to the door these days - have they lowered the road? [This building is long gone. - Dave] View Larger Map

EAST Interview: Emilie Houssart's Abstract Light

Blunn Creek by Emilie Houssart East Austin Studio Tour Saturday, November 22 - Sunday, November 23 Various Venues (Austin) free, 10am-5pm both days [info]It's not often that we are struck utterly dumb by the sheer force of someone's talent, and it's also not often that we can literally feel the green in our eyes spread to the rest of our body as vines of envy take root. But that is exactly how we felt when we first encountered the work of artist Emilie Houssart. When viewing some of her studies

New list of jail sites - and one West Seattle site is still on it

View Larger Map We’re in the briefing room next to the mayor’s office at City Hall downtown. A media briefing with the next steps on the jail-site search process is about to begin - and we’ve just been given a list of the six sites that are now under consideration, including sites that other cities partnering with Seattle have brought to the process. The Myers Way South site in southeastern West Seattle is OFF the list, but the Highland Park Way/West Marginal Way site (Google Street View imag

On G-20 and GM: Economics, Politics and Social Stability

The Big Three have a new customer, and it isn't you. As Detroit's former heavyweights fight for a slice of a $25 billion bailout package, more than humble pie is being eaten. If the automakers fail and take their companies into bankruptcy, Michigan as we know it ceases to exist economically. The trickle-down impact could rapidly become a waterfall: the seat supplier in Georgia loses three major customers. The factory worker who makes seats is out of a job. The bank who holds his mortgage takes

The End of Wall Street?

The End of Wall Street? If you haven’t seen it already, there is a fantastic article by Michael Lewis entitled The End published by Portfolio.com recently. Lewis is someone you should know as the author of Liar’s Poker. If you haven’t read that book, I strongly recommend you do. It’s a fantastically written account of Lewis’ experience getting into the world of high finance back in the middle/latter 1980s when he worked for Solomon Brothers. He’s also very well known as the author of Moneyball

A vast, chicken-wing conspiracy

There are vast, right wing conspiracies and vast, left wing conspiracies, but what is facing the biofuels industry is a vast, chicken wing conspiracy. The conspirators are drawn from groups that Daniel Gross, writing in Slate, described as “poverty activists, inflation hawks, efficiency freaks and environmentalists”, and are led by a coalition of processed food, meat and poultry producers. Meat and poultry producers are defending their business model, and let’s give them credit for that. The

BlackBerry Storm (RIM): Getting around using GPS

One question that keeps coming up regarding Research in Motion (RIM) BlackBerry Storm is about the GPS system, firstly we get asked if GPS is unlocked on the Storm, the answer is yes, the other question we get asked time after time is if Google Maps works well with the BlackBerry Storm, No, infact its terrible, we wouldn’t bother with Google Maps on the Storm, it’s completely messed up and Street View is awful, you will not be able to pinpoint your location with GPS you can only get approximate
