Busy Busy!
Busy Busy! Nov 6th, 2008 by Alicia What a busy few days! We barely unpacked from Nebraska before packing for Mankato for an overnight visit. A few highlights… The kids and I volunteered at the Humane Society for our first time. Jack got to get into a pen filled with kittens and the girls and I brushed very loving (and appreciative) cats. Jack liked the kittens but there was a down side. They got all riled up and kept climbing him! Kittens have sharp claws when they suddenly scale you
A tale from a farm
An old American Muslim lived on a farm in the mountains of eastern Kentucky with his young grandson. Each morning Grandpa would wakeup early sitting at the kitchen table reading his Quran. His grandson wanted to be just like him and tried to imitate him in every way he could. One day the grandson asked, "Grandpa! I try to read the Qur'an just like you but I don't understand it, and what I do understand I forget as soon as I close the book. What good does reading the Qur'an do?" The Grandf
Some Southeast Asian Butterflies
I generally don’t hold to superstitious beliefs, at least when it comes to numbers, but the third time definitely turned out to be the charm for Lael and I at the Pacific Science Center Butterfly Garden, as it was opened for the first time of our three visits this Fall. Good thing, too, as the weather definitely favored inside activities, and the Butterfly Garden seemed like the perfect antidote for a cold and gray Fall day. Lael picked up some new skills since we were there last Spring. She p
Small Plates - November 5, 2008
NO KRISPY KREME - So, I was mentioning to some friends last night that I missed out on picking up free donuts at Krispy Kreme for voting. And they let me know that most of the local Krispy Kremes have closed! Wow. I remember when Krispy Kreme first came to the area and everyone was so excited, but the two closest to me are now gone. Nearest KK store is 14 miles away...if you add bay area traffic on weekday mornings it would take almost an hour to get there! What happened? Bad management? The l
Indian Burial Customs Vary Widely

Death and Technical Writing
Yesterday was pretty weird. Imagine me saying that like Larry David: “Pretty preeetty weird.” It started off normally enough, considering that I had just scheduled yesterday’s job interview at 5 p.m. the night before. I was hustling to fill out an application, gather writing samples, and defuzzing my favorite interview shirt. I was mentally girding myself to speak with five people in a three-hour gantlet, finishing with the recruiter, which kind of made it six. It was exhausting, but I feel lik
Fuck You Bulls, You’re Dead
The downside moves in some names are absolutely staggering. I am having my face melted off, long BE Aerospace, Inc. (BEAV: 10.88 -12.89%) , in a way that is most startling. Although I ended the day, mostly unscathed, most of you longs shall and will be scared for dear life soon. The boogey man of bankruptcy is after your ass, old school tax collector style, trying to knock your head off and shit down your neck. The assclowns on CNBC are an atrocity of epic proportions to all those with skin i
Entitlement, affluenza and we’re spoiled brats!
Christmas is coming! My friend Amy, on her blog Growing Like Trees, talked yesterday about gift giving. Or, in her case, not gift giving. Her post inspired the following. I really love the Christmas season, but I’m terrible at receiving gifts. I only realized this a few years ago. If I get something that doesn’t pique my interest, or that I wasn’t expecting, I’m not very good at hiding my disinterest — or feigning interest. No one’s ever told me that I was being a jerk, I just happened to rea
Couples Vacations For Your Young-At-Heart Grandparents
Imagine your grandparents young and in love? They’re so practical and boring it’s almost impossible to think of them having fun. When you heard them talking to your parents about their dream vacation, you could not believe your ears. Granny and Grandpa always wanted to go on one of those wild couples vacations in the Caribbean but never got the chance. You decided to treat them to the vacation they always deserved. After talking to your parents, you all decided to chip in and pay for an a

Haters gotta hate
To quote or perhaps paraphrase my boy Katt Williams “Haters gotta hate, that’s they motherfucking job.” See today I was continuing to walk around in the afterglow of Obama’s win, yet I knew some punk ass bitch was going to say or do something that smacked me back to the fact that America is still a fucked up joint albeit a tad less fucked up since more of us came together than not to choose change. Anyhoo, yesterday out in cyberspace I came across a few of my mothering blogs where there were mo
Scarlett Johansson is the cure
Scarlett Johansson showed up at a Parkinson’s benefit dressed like this. At least now everyone is getting the shakes. Plus, there’s no better way to raise awareness for Parkinson’s then to show some cleavage. Like my grandpa always used to say, “TIts!” Related posts Scarlett Johansson is kinky (0) Scarlett Johansson does Allure (0) Celebrity music news round-up (1) Scarlett was embarrassed (1) Afternoon time wasters (0)
Hero of the Week: Laura Stockman
By Dan Estabrook - November 6, 2008 Our Hero of the Week, Laura Stockman, started a blog in honor of her grandfather last year. The 12-year-old from upstate New York created 25 Days to Make a Difference, where she performed a charitable act every day during December 2007 and chronicled it for her readers: Albert Stockman was my grandpa. He loved helping other people, and he believed that everybody could make the world a better place, not just by doing big things, but by doing small things to
cat names
I’ve mentioned Jon Hodgeman before. I love the “700 Hobo Names” list in his first book The Areas of My Expertise. In his new book, More Information Than You Require, there is a list of 700 mole men. I haven’t read it yet, but my guess is it’s a real hoot. I like his name lists so much that I’m ripping it off. We might be getting a new kitty, so I sat down to write some names for it. Gone are the days when you just get a cat and give it a stupid name like, “Gary.” Now that I’m all grown up I’v
Bite Marks
I finished Bite Marks yesterday. Took about three seconds to see if I felt any sense of relief. Nope. So I jumped straight into the rewrite. That helped a ton. Spending five months on a project can fog your perspective big-time. Usually on the day I type THE END I have no idea if what I’ve written is fun or flop. So far, halfway through chapter three, I’m thinking fun. Whew! Still lots of work ahead. A major rewrite. Time off so my readers can give me their reactions, and then anothe
Dear Mr. President Elect Obama,
Dear Mr. President Elect Obama, We, as Americans, have given you one of the highest honors that we can give, my commitment to you that I will not move to Canada in the next four years. The same could not have been said if "hockey mom" won. I can't relate to a "hockey mom", my kids play soccer. I know, I know, McCain was gonna be president, but really, how sure are we that he will live another 4 years? Ok, back the issue at hand. 1st off let me say that I'm already over the "first bl
Deepavali 2008 - How was it?
After having a long (actually short :P) thought about this, I have decided to cramp summarize the entire Deepavali celebration in one post. Reasons: 1. Way too many photographs (66) 2. Deepavali mood has since fizzled down 3. This ain't a photoblog although it may have started to look like one 4. I'm lazy The preparation The mood sets in with muruku- and cookies-making before the house is cleaned. Next will be the annual ritual of me applying mehendi on the the girls' hands. Having a fe

wondering
Last night was my turn at serving in the church nursery. But "served," I must say, seems a far cry from what actually transpired. I was blessed to sit in that corner rocker, holding that beautiful new boy. Sean and I spent a quiet hour doing little more than rocking and staring. I don't know what thoughts went through his little mind, but here are mine. He's less than three months old. His eyes have yet to focus on injustice; his heart hasn't yet felt pain. All his needs are tended to by
Our First Full Day With Rudy
Nana and Grandpa have had 24 hours so far with our Rudy and oh what a treat!!! My own children were pretty wonderful (and still are) but this baby has the sweetest spirit I've ever come in contact with, he is all smiles, peace and happiness. He is on the verge of crawling and will no doubt be there by the time he is with us at Christmas. He blabbers all the time and his hand eye coordination is excellent. The annoying toy I brought isn't half as bad as some his own parents have gotten him and
