Tropical Storm Gustav

On the 3 year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina we are now looking at a possible repeat with Tropical Storm Gustav.
Trying to balance the line between preparation and panic can be tricky. With the National Hurricane Center projecting Gustav to make landfall 4 days from now, gas prices jumped 25 cents yesterday and you can not buy bottled water at the local WalMart.
It is hard to get prepared when supplies run out a week in advance. So I guess it may be more important to see if FEMA and such agencies learned anything and start some movement now, and if [...]

Fuel Efficient Cars Used

That is the goal!
Currently I own 2 vehicles, a large family car and a pickup truck. I have always considered a pickup truck a necessity. Even if it is not driven daily, every man needs a pickup truck. However, with the price of fuel it is time to go back to a more fuel efficient car, and since I do not want any payments the only option is to find a good used fuel efficient car.
The car of choice for me is an old Volkswagen Beetle, the downside is that the Beetle was never a great car when it comes [...]

Still gotta love those Saints

Even though they were no match for the Chicago Bears today, ya gotta still love those Saints. A year after Katrina the New Orleans Saints were definitely a rare bright spot in the Big Easy.
And you know Cowboy Maloney has to be breathing a little easier today!
Now let’s see what the AFC game brings.
Go Indianapolis Colts !

Tornadocane

I guess you could say I am a little bit of a weather buff. Until Hurricane Katrina took a path that put us in the dark for several days and scared the daylights out of us, we (my wife and I) would look forward to a little stormy weather. Now, we are a little more leary of a big storm, yet we still like the rain with thunder and lightning.
Anyway, I found this posting at the Weather Channel to be very interesting and worth a look.

Pet Emergency Kits

Pet Emergency Kits November 20th, 2008 Powered By CbproAds Pet Emergency Kits Pet emergency kits are an essential part of the survival of pets during emergencies. The importance of preparing for calamities, not only for yourself and family, but also for your pets has been underscored after a lot of dead pets were found in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, which hit several areas in the southern parts of the United States. A lot of dogs, cats and even other exotic animals were left in th

FOTO Week DC Exhibits in Anacostia

Historically addresses ending in “SE” haven’t received the arts coverage that they would otherwise be showered with if they were located near 14th St. NW, but that doesn’t mean there’s not a thriving arts scene on the other side of the river. FOTO Week DC ends Saturday, but we at City Paper would be remiss not to point out some of the great SE venues participating in the festival: Honfleur Gallery: “Fragile” by John K. Lawson “examines the artist’s work pre and post Hurricane Katrina,” using

Random Fun :)

Here's a couple of random pics from the things I've been doing lately :) My mom teaches ESL (English as a Second Language) at FBC in Tally, so when I'm in town, I go with her to her class and help out. We have the very beginners that don't really speak any English at all. It's a very fun class! Anyway, this past Tuesday night, we had a Thanksgiving banquet with the Students and their friends. We met some new South Asian friends and had a lot of fun! :) At the end, some of the students played in

Cameron Diaz Tours New Orleans, Talks Green Architecture

Every time I write a post about New Orleans, I find it hard to believe that “rebuilding” is still  a major focus for the region. Here we are, more than three years later, and there are still many people — scratch that, neighborhoods — that still have not been restored to community status. It’s 2008 in the United States of America and that’s the reality of our infrastructure response to disaster? Incredible. Indeed, rebuilding is still plodding along, and the proper way — the green, sustainab

Malik Rahim calls his race winnable

Posted by Ronald Hardy at Green Party Watch From Malik Rahim: Dear friends in the struggle, As you may be aware, I am seeking election to the United States House of Representatives on December 6. I apologize in advance for the impersonal nature of this letter. I wish I would have had time to call my friends to discuss the details of this campaign. I’m sending this message because I need your help. Four days after Hurricane Katrina and two days before founding Common Ground I made this d

Prospect.1 - Shirin Neshat: Women without Men

Tonight at 6 p.m. I’ll be hitting another Prospect.1 event and doing some audiocasting, an exhibition reception for Shirin Neshat: Women without Men. The reception opens at 6pm and it’s a free show. (If you happen to be a member of the gallery come at 5 pm- there will be wine.) Today also marks the debut of the @Newcomb_Gallery twitter which I have helped set up, and they should be tweeting live during the reception. Come on and friend them, the more local arts we pull into the 21st Century

Dammit, Janet, I Love You

If Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano actually becomes Secretary of Homeland Security, as President-elect Obama seems to desire... well, we could do worse. The first DHS secretary, Tom Ridge, struck me (I only met him twice) as a smart guy who really didn't understand his portfolio and was being driven slowly mad by the blame accrued for the agency's sloppy organization and stupid proposals. Second-and-current Secretary Michael Chertoff as been nowhere near as bad as we had reason to expect. Yes, he

Ike and the wetlands

Hurricane Ike was over two months ago. I'm finally finding the time to post some pictures hubby and I snapped during our trek around Slidell on the Friday morning Ike made landfall. Although Ike came ashore in eastern Texas, everyone along the northern Gulf of Mexico felt his impact. The tidal surge created havoc days before, with road closures in New Orleans East and beyond. Here's what we saw back in early September. [click on pictures for full-size versions] The Bayou Liberty bridge Th

A Letter from Malik

I’m passing the mic to Malik Rahim who has sent out the following campaign letter. — B November 19, 2008 Dear friends in the struggle, As you may be aware, I am seeking election to the United States House of Representatives on December 6. Arizona’s Loss Good For The Nation

Well, it appears I was wrong. Several media outlets reported late Wednesday that unnamed Democratic officials said President-elect Barack Obama will likely tap Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano for secretary of homeland security. In recent days, i’ve argued that it may be in the best interests of Obama and the Democratic Party to leave Napolitano in place at her current job, ahead of a 2010 matchup to unseat Sen. John McCain. However, given Obama’s apparent desire to surround himself with a brain

Address Unknown

Katy Reckdahl in a Times-Pic article thin on specifics points out a rather significant event in the history of post-Katrina blight in New Orleans. The Housing Authority of New Orleans on Wednesday approved the sale or demolition nearly three-quarters of its scattered-site properties, targeting more than 500 of 700 total apartments. HANO's one-woman board, Diane Johnson, approved the agenda item without discussion, but the written resolution noted that the jettisoned units had been inspected a

Raven Biofuels selects Larsen Engineering for 33 Mgy cellulosic ethanol plant in Mississippi

In Mississippi, Raven Biofuels signed an agreement with Larsen Engineering to commence planning for Raven’s proposed 33 Mgy cellulosic ethanol plant in the Gulf Opportunity Zone established after Hurricane Katrina. The GO Zone initiatives, plus power cogeneration opportunities with local utilities, were instrumental in the final selection of the location. Under the Raven agreement, Larsen will handle process design work, permitting and act as the owner’s engineer in specifying  equipment, mater

The National Guard Gets Its First Four-Star General In A Looong Time

Gen. Craig R. McKinley (Photo from U.S. Air Force) From Nukes And Spooks: The Pentagon these days is on a four-star bonanza. Last week, the Army named its first female four-star Army general, Ann Dunwoody, in an emotional ceremony that sparked hopes across the ranks that the military was finally turning another historic corner. Today, the military appointed its first four-star chief of the National Guard bureau in a long, long time, Gen. Craig R. McKinley. He replaces Lt. Gen. H. Steven Blum.

Conservatism’s Gut-Job on Government

Reading the headlines over the past week, I’m beginning to wonder if there’s a single agency in the United States government that conservatives haven’t left in worse shape than they found it. I’ve been reading about demoralized government employees, under-resourced departments, and agencies left in shambles after eight years of Republican rule. A few days after the election I participated in a telephone survey about the outcome. The surveyor, at one point, asked me how I felt about the Bush ad

Jarboe - Jarboe, Herself

A haunting voice, a guest spot by Mr. Anselmo, and a new album out on The End Records. We just had to have a word with Jarboe! 1. Be honest…what do you think of SMNnews.com and have you ever been to the site? Yes, I have been to the site! It is full of detail and variety and holds the interest. 2. What’s the worst band you’ve heard in the past few weeks? Hmm. The serious answer is:  I‘m not the judge but  I’m diplomatic. The  playful answer is : If I were to name it, the other worst b

Bill Maher and Jay Leno, November 19

The Tonight Show is swinging to the far Left this week. Tuesday night, Chris Matthews was a guest.Wednesday, Jay Leno had Bill Maher on the show -- AGAIN. Maher's hair looked greasier than usual. Pretty gross. His last guest appearance with Leno was in October. This was his first visit since the election. So naturally, the first topic was the election. Leno led off with: "Are you happy with the results?"BILL MAHER: I'm Hussein in the membrane. Are you kidding?Did you see his first press conferenc

When Art Is A Big Ol’ “Fuck You” To The President

This is the last of my catching-up posts from New Orleans. I’m really hoping I don’t get tempted to “reflect” on the experience later this week, but who knows…you might be in for a real wankfest around Friday lunchtime. Meanwhile these are photos taken in the Tekrema Center For Art & Culture in the ninth ward, which was bought to be turned into a cultural center exactly one month before Katrina hit. Needless to say, the hurricane held things back a bit: Inside, there are two exhibits. Th
