Rain Supreme: Big surprises at soaked Italian Grand Prix (SPOILER ALERT) By BlueFox at 6 October, 2008, 8:49 pm ,Rain Supreme: Big surprises at soaked Italian Grand Prix (SPOILER ALERT) Racing fans are used to tuning in on the Saturday of a grand prix weekend to find the words “Scuderia” and “Ferrari” at the top of the qualifying list. But interrupted by the words “Toro Rosso”? Never. But that was only the first of many surprises at this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix. Sebastian Vettel s

At least now the Lancer won’t be the only Mitsu wearing a grille cribbed from the ‘57 Chrysler 300. The new front fascia will include angry-eye headlamps and appears to be the on

Chevy to temporarily halt Vette production due to economy

Chevy to temporarily halt Vette production due to economy By BlueFox at 6 October, 2008, 8:46 pm ,Chevy to temporarily halt Vette production due to economy It’s been more than a decade since the “recession-proof” Chevrolet Corvette had to endure a production cut due to excess dealer inventory, but that’s apparently the case once again. Citing slow sales related to the ongoing automotive recession, GM will turn off the Corvette’s factory lights during the week of October 6th. When Vette

How NOT to protect your car from a hurricane

How NOT to protect your car from a hurricane By BlueFox at 6 October, 2008, 8:43 pm ,How NOT to protect your car from a hurricane It’s not funny. Okay, maybe it’s worth a chortle. It’s also likely not effective, but if you don’t want your early ’90s vintage Buick Century to be washed or blown away by nature’s fury, you try stuff. Besides, if you’re in the midst of an evacuation frenzy, what do you really have time to do? It looks like this owner had the opportunity to toss a carpet on t

Extreme Coastal Changes and Storm Surge Measurements from Hurricanes Ike and Gustav

What: Reporters are invited to attend a special presentation about the impacts of Hurricanes Ike and Gustav on the Texas and Louisiana coast. Compelling before-and-after photographs of the storms will be Bolivar Peninsula before and two days after Ike presented during an earth-science conference in Houston, October 6. "Extreme storms like Hurricanes Ike and Gustav can change the shape and position of the coast as well as destroy buildings," said U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) oceanog

Let’s stick with the clean energy message despite temptations to stray

Hurricane Ike spilled at least half a million gallons of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico and the wetlands of Louisiana and Texas, according to a review of federal data by the Associated Press, released today. As proponents of dirty fuels natter on about the safety of new offshore drilling techniques, it’s tempting to counter them with a spiel about the toxic mess caused by Ike: “See! Pumping oil out of the ocean floor is inherently risky, so the more we do, the more collateral damage we’ll

LaCouture Earns a Spot

LaCouture Earns a Spot The Hurricanes signed free-agent tryout Dan LaCouture to a one-year, two-way contract. The deal will pay LaCouture $475,000 at the NHL level and $50,000 in the AHL. LaCouture is guaranteed to earn at least $75,000 for the season.       “Dan came to our camp in great physical condition and earned himself a contract,” assistant general manager Ron Francis said [...] October 06, 2008 | Cory

An Iraqi Message to Obama

An Iraqi Message to Obama Max Boot - 10.06.2008 - 3:33 PM I have been in Iraq the past few days, along with three other writers, visiting with Iraqi and American soldiers on the front-lines of the increasingly successful battle against Shiite and Sunni extremists. But along with tales of success we have also heard repeated cautions about how fragile and easily reversible the gains of the past 18 months remain. One of the questions that my colleagues and I have asked is what would happen if

Carolina's Walker to miss six weeks with injured hand

Carolina Hurricanes veteran Scott Walker will miss the next six weeks following successful surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left hand.

A quiet ending, please

It has been a very active hurricane season this year. There were a couple of big ones that caused a lot of damage like Gustav and Ike. Every time these disasters happen, I always wonder if my term life insurance will be gone. Why? Because when these disasters happen, a lot of insurance companies could go belly-up. That was exactly what happened in Florida 4 years ago when there was an onslaught of hurricanes. Many insurance companies were overwhelmed with claims till they had to close because t

All You Need To Know

As you know: In the face of public outrage over -- and House rejection of -- the Bush administration's attempt at a $700 billion extortion -- a "gift" of your money to the very same people who have caused a global financial crisis -- administration hacks reacted in predictable fashion, throwing in another $100 billion worth of bribes in a shameless bid to get the bill passed. Then the Senate approved, by a 3-1 margin, a thrown-together 450-page bill that few of them could have had time to read

New storm in the tropics

Looks like the 13th named storm of the 2008 season will form today in the Gulf of Campeche. But the little cyclone has little chance to develop into more than a really bad rain storm - as much as 6 inches of rain - for southeastern Mexico. Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center say the storm will likely move west onto Mexican shores late today or tomorrow, becoming one of the shortest-lived tropical storms of the season. Now only a tropical depression, it will become Tropical Storm Mar

All Fall Down

by Jim Kunstler October 06, 2008 God knows what manner of deals went down this past weekend in the Hamptons wine cellars and below-decks among the Chesapeake Bay sailboat fleet. All these hidey-holes must have been dank and fetid with the sweat of mortal fear. Will the US Government declare itself a subsidiary of General Electric? Will Vlad Putin be roped in to save Goldman Sachs? Meanwhile, the whole noisome rat maze of international counter-party deals was taking on sewer water and rodents

Tuesday’s Line Up

Has the Kimbo Slice era finally come to a close?  The biggest fraud in the ring since Mike Tyson is now dealing with a stunning, 14-second beatdown.  We’ll talk about that with local MMA promoter, Doug Muhle (7:45). The BCS Standings are coming fast, and that means weekly conversations with Jerry Palm to sort it out (8:10).  Plus, we’ll rank the ACC, contemplate the demise of the Chicago Cubs and look back on Week 5 of the NFL. We’ve got tickets to give away to the UNC-Boston College game, we

My Picks for the Roster

My Picks for the Roster Since the Carolina Hurricanes just announced that Scott Walker had surgery on his left hand this morning and will miss up to six weeks of action, it looks like another job just opened up for somebody, albeit a temporary one. Twenty three players can be kept for the opening night roster. Here are my picks- Eric [...] October 06, 2008 | Bubba

Jindal Displays Tender Side

Thanks to Jeff Crouere for this gem of a photo that captures a tender moment between Gov. Bobby Jindal and Terrebonne Parish President Michel Claudet. I sincerely doubt this will help Claudet improve his already battered image, after he notoriously suffered a meltdown in the aftermath of hurricane Gustav.

TNGOP on McCain's fundamentally sound economy

Although most of their press releases are about abortion, illegal immigration, gun rights, the war on terror, and taking over the Tennessee legislature, the Tennessee Republican Party has weighed in on the economy from time to time: TNGOP Press Release, Jan. 2008: "On the economic front, Democrats want to convey fear about "recession." Despite a rise of almost 12% in real after-tax per capita income (averaging $3550 per worker), the reduction of the federal deficit by $250 Billion over the las
