Is it World War III ?

As long as I can remember I have wondered what World War III would be like. Not if, but, when.
As I watch the news and see the Media publishing private comments by world leaders that was picked up by a microphone, I can not fathom how anyone can see that as right. No wonder we can’t win a battle anymore, we tell our enemies everything. And if that was not enough we have our own people trashing our leaders and making us look like a small fragmented society instead of a world leader.
I admit my ignorance on the critical issues, [...]

Human Trafficking in the Middle East

About the Author: Ambassador Mark P. Lagon is Senior Advisor to the Secretary of State and Director of the U.S. Department of State’s Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons. I have recently visited two major powers in the Middle East – Egypt and Saudi Arabia – quite different from one another in the context of trafficking in persons (TIP). I came away with striking impressions from my visits and dialogue. There are some promising efforts in Egypt. Amendments to the child prot

Pistons VP Scott Perry told me he’s doing well and readying to return to Ita

SFist Interviews the Guarneri String Quartet

Tomorrow night, under the auspices of SF Performances at Herbst Theater, the Guarneri Quartet will play its last concert in San Francisco; they're hanging up their instruments after forty-five years of service. If that weren't reason enough to go see them one last time - -they pretty much define "string quartet" - they do present an exciting program. They may have one foot in retirement, but they'll still play the Mendelssohn Octet and the exciting Bay Area premiere of Derek Bermel's Passing

Dealing with Income Gaps

Few aspects of parenting are more intractable than teaching our children to deal with disparities in lifestyle. Yet we must deal with this challenge, for such gaps, like the poor, will always be with us. A society without wide disparities in income and lifestyle would be in many ways a more pleasant place to live. But that does not necessarily make it the ideal. Those societies with the widest income gaps also tend to be the greatest wealth producing societies for all. They unleash the power

Tonedeaf Test

Tonedeaf Test The original tonedeaf test, taken by over one million people. I created this test while working at the music and neuroimaging lab at Beth Israel/Harvard Medical School during medical school. In our research, we were looking for neuro-anatomical correlates of tonedeafness and we used this test as a quick screening test to see if subjects might be suitable for our study. After you take this test you can compare your results to tens of thousands of other subjects to see how "tonedeaf

Arabs Are Skeptical Since Obama Appointed Rahm

Arabs Are Skeptical Since Obama Appointed Rahm Obama inspires Arab dreams – and despair By Hasan al Subaihi / November 19. 2008 Shabaan Abdel Raheem is a popular Egyptian singer who has developed a style inherited from the musicians of the Egyptian countryside. Abdel Raheem worked as a dry cleaner for many years while keeping his talents for the entertainment of his local neighbourhood. Now his songs are heard across Egypt and the Arab world. He sings about important issues that touch the

Clashes erupt in Hebron

HEBRON, West Bank (CNN) — Jewish settlers clashed overnight with Palestinians in the divided city of Hebron, and inflammatory graffiti was found on Muslim gravestones and on a mosque in the West Bank town, the Israeli military sources said Thursday. Army Radio reported the Jewish settlers scrawled “Mohammed is a pig” on the mosque, which is near a disputed building in Hebron. Israel Defense Forces cleaned the graffiti off on Thursday, the radio reported. A day earlier, Jewish settlers liv

Surprise, surprise

Look what the IAEA dug up: The first independent investigation of the suspected nuclear site in Syria that Israel destroyed last year has bolstered U.S. claims that Damascus was building a secret nuclear reactor, according to a U.N. report that also confirmed the discovery of traces of uranium amid the ruins. Officials with the United Nations’ atomic agency stopped short of declaring the wrecked facility a nuclear reactor, but they said it strongly resembled one. And they noted that Syria ha

IAEA And The Media On Iran And Syria

Yesterday the IAEA released its latest report (pdf) on Iran and one on Syria's 'Box on the Euphrates'. As expected there is nothing new on Iran. It produces low enriched Uranium, as is its right, and refutes murky U.S. allegations of a nuclear weaponization program. On the Box of the Euphrates, the building Israel bombed in Syria a year ago, the IAEA found that the size of the building would allow for a reactor and the pipeline from the river for enough reactor cooling. So the demolished

Membership has its Privileges

The Senate’s been looking just great this week.  Starting with the Democrats refusal to bounce Lieberman (D; All-about-me-istan) from either the caucus or the Chairmanship of Homeland Security, to the GOP refusing to kick seven-time-felon Ted Stephens (R; All-for-me-istan) out of the caucus on the pre-text of “waiting for the Alaskan voters to decide”, the Club is still a Club. And this afternoon the Senate just held an emotional, fully attended little session for Stephens, letting him wax on

Nothing too good for UN-o-crats

Your tax dollars at work. Claudia Rosett:  People around the world may be tightening their belts, but at the United Nations in Geneva it was party time on Tuesday, with Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon on hand to celebrate the new ceiling decor for the chamber now named “the Human Rights and Alliance of Civilizations Room” — meeting place for the UN’s so-called Human Rights Council. The chamber’s new ceiling, product of Spanish artist and moneypit maestro Miguel Barcelo, rang up a price tag of —

Sanofi-Aventis Drops Case Against Teva & Barr for Tocken Royalties

Sanofi-Aventis announced yesterday that it has settled lawsuits against Barr Pharmaceuticals and Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd., both accused of infringing its patents in the United States with their generic versions of Allegra and Nasacort which are used for treating allergies. Under the settlement, Sanofi-Aventis claims that Barr and Teva will each pay Sanofi-Aventis euro30 million in back royalties in exchange for licenses to sell generic versions of Allegra and have also agreed to pa

UN Trying to BAN FREE SPEECH

Jihad is not just fought with guns and bombs one of its most effective weapons is Political Correctness. The Organization of Islamic Conference are trying push through a bill in the UN that would make defamation of religion a crime under international Law. It might sound like a noble effort, but its real purpose is to targeting the US and Western Europe branding them as Islamophobic (its not paranoia if they are REALLY after you). Under this bill every time one says that there is a global war on

Neocons Glom... Hillary

Jacob Heilbrunn, neocon spotter, has a fine piece in Huffington Post pointing out that the neocons, deprived of a host by McCain's demise, are, surprise, relaunching as Hillary Clintonites. Obama? No problem. The Weekly Standard has apparently been adoring Hillary. And of course there's Joe Lieberman extolling her. This isn't gall, this is "a sect that has some of the properties of a party." (Thanks to James Morris.)

Don’t defend religion by silencing free speech

By Marc D. Stern · November 20, 2008 NEW YORK (JTA)—A draft resolution scheduled for consideration by a committee of the United Nations General Assembly threatens to silence criticism of religion. The resolution, circulated by the Organization of the Islamic Conference, representing more than 50 Muslim nations, is perversely being advanced under the guise of protecting human rights. In its current form, the resolution would declare defamation of religion to be a violation of international la

Better Place to Build First U.S. Electric Vehicle Network in Bay Area

Bay Area leaders are attempting to use a combination of public and private investment to turn the region into the Electric Vehicle Capital of the U.S., and Silicon Valley’s Better Place will play a key role in building out a $1 billion electric vehicle charging infrastructure. This will be Better Place’s first foray into the U.S. market. A group of politicians, including California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, and the mayors of San Francisco, San Jose and Oakland, along with Better Place exe

Israeli air-strike on Syria vindicated by UN

Israeli air-strike on Syria vindicated by UN November 20, 2008, 3:45 pm By Andrew L. Jaffee During a visit in June 2008 to a site in Syria which was bombed by Israeli aircraft, UN inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) found “traces of uranium,” and concluded that features of the now-demolished complex “are similar to what may be found in connection with a reactor site.” Hey, this is confirmation from the UN. Will wonders never cease? From Haaretz: A Syrian complex b
