Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
J. K. Rowling has released the title Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows as the 7th book in the Harry Potter series.
In doing so she used a puzzle on her site to make the announcement.
Her site is very interesting and well designed, worth a little time if you are a Harry Potter fan.

It’s All About the Books
I saw this post a couple of weeks ago over at Life After College (followed a BlogHer link!) and have wanted to do this meme-ish thing but have had trouble finding the time. (What a surprise…ahem.) I wish I could find more information about the source of this list, but I poked around both websites Amy linked to and can’t figure out exactly where the list originated. I still think it’s cool though. Here’s what Amy had to say: “The Big Read is an NEA program designed to encourage community readi
BBC NEWS | UK | Wales | 'Staggering' library book thefts
Children's authors most stolen... Some councils also revealed those authors whose books were most popular with thieves, or which were borrowed and not returned. Not surprisingly, perhaps, they tallied with best-sellers such as Harry Potter author JK Rowling, Roald Dahl, Terry Pratchett and Jacqueline Wilson... In Wrexham, 74 health books were not returned in 2006-07 and another 68 copies are "missing" for 2007-08. Forty one copies of books by children's author Jacqueline Wilson were stolen or n

Top Gear’s Jeremy Clarkson Writes About The Future Of Veteran Rock Bands In The Sunday Times Of London
Jeremy Clarkson (pictured above), the host of the BBC’s heralded automotive program Top Gear (which can be seen in the States on BBC America), has written a very interesting comment piece in today’s edition of The Sunday Times of London concerning veteran bands that are losing members through either the band member leaving the group or by key members of the band dying. Clarkson discusses the idea of tribute bands and doesn’t dismiss them as many other writers have done. Clarkson opined: In fact,
Lit Mags and Author Interviews. Jim Harrison.
As a professor, my favorite assignments are ones where I become absorbed in the grading, where the completed assignment (poem, essay, fiction, other…) leads me away from the table and off into some shredded sky and maybe underwater holding my breath in a glacial stream. My 610 (Writing Across the Genres) is always an excellent class, as expected from graduate school writers. And I was recently grading an assignment I gave them: researching Lit Mags, looking up author interviews, taking a clos
Harry Potter and the Good/Bad Writing Advice
There’s a very interesting post over at Nathan Bransford’s page about bad writing advice. However, here’s something I pulled out of the comments: “Write what you know.” [This is the bad advice.] Heard that from a creative writing professor about my manuscript centered around a family of women (I’m a dude). Oh yeah, thought I? Well where the heck does Harry Potter come from then? Since when is Rowling a wizard and a boy wizard at that??? I don’t like to criticize other people, but I frankly I th

13/10/1975 - Whina Cooper leads land march to Parliament About 5000 marchers arrived at Parliament and presented a petition signed by 60,000 people to Prime Minister Bill Rowling. The primary aim of the march was to call for a halt to the alienation of Maori land.

Recently, I read Dave Eggers’ essay on the future of reading in Esquire. It’s an excellent essay, using statistics to show us that the future of reading is extremely positive. This is an argument I’ve been making for nearly two decades now. After reading Eggers’ essay, I decided to post one of my R.L. Stine editorials from The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. The essay is 13 years old. R.L. Stine is no longer the hottest writer for kids. He’s been supplanted by J.K. Rowling and nearl
Oh my God, they killed Gary (Oldman)!
Here is the just released trailer for the David Goyer supernatural thriller, The Unborn. As you’ll notice, an oddly clean-shaven Gary Oldman plays a professor or religious figure of some kind. Spoiler-alert - Gary Oldman is killed. I have not seen the movie. I know very little about the movie. But you’re just gonna have to trust me. If only one person dies in this film, it will be Gary Oldman. For whatever reason, Gary Oldman has arguably the highest proportional death rate of any above the
Book Sale Trends
I’ve been keeping a worksheet this year to track the trends of book sales for the calendar year of 2008. It’s been interesting to see how individual categories of books have sold over the year. The biggest gains have been achieved by ebooks. Even though ebooks haven’t broke into the mainstream, ebook sales are growing expontentially. From January through August, the ebook numbers look like this (in the millions of sales): ^26.1 (3.1m) ^6.7 (2.6m) ^58.9% (4.4) ^19.9% (3.4 m) ^24.3% ($3.3 m

Blunderrifix: Or Perhaps Not
Story trumps words. Story trumps grammar. Story trumps critics. I recently finished reading, Their Eyes Were Watching God. In dave-speak, this is a most excellent book! It is also one of those books that are studied in school and offered up to the legions of microscope-bearing critics. One critic doesn't think the book has a plot. Maybe not, I don't even know. I do know that I picked the book up and put it down just a few times before completing it. (dull-gurn day job :-( If an author
A Message of Pendant Lighting
A Message of Pendant Lighting The Princess Diaries is one of the most popular teen movies of this age. The movie is actually an adaptation of a series of books authored by Meg Cabot. The genre of the book belongs to chic-lit genre. Meg Cabot has since been one of the literary icons among the young ones like J.K. Rowling in the sorcery department.Princess Diaries chronicles the teenage travails and turmoil of Mia. She is an average teenager until she suddenly received a message of pendant l

Is Latin Becoming More Popular with Kids?
This week the New York Times reported that more kids are learning Latin in schools, based on a couple of examples from greater New York and these national statistics: The number of students in the United States taking the National Latin Exam has risen steadily to more than 134,000 students in each of the past two years, from 124,000 in 2003 and 101,000 in 1998, with large increases in remote parts of the country like New Mexico, Alaska and Vermont. The number of students taking the Advanced Plac
Harry Potter for Presbyterians
The Reformed folk of the world (among others) are gearing up for the release of the new ESV Study Bible on Wednesday. Around these parts (especially if you’re a seminary student), it’s going to be insane: I think of it as Harry Potter for Presbyterians. This past Thursday, when I arrived at Covenant’s bookstore to work my afternoon shift, I saw 25 unopened orange, white, and black boxes in the back, just waiting to be “received” (the term we use for the process of entering new books into the sys
