U.S. Hostage Jill Carroll Released

It’s good to see good news from Iraq. I am surprised that some of the media even mentions this story, sometimes it feels like they only want us to see and hear the bad news.

The Dead Boy Detectives by Jill Thompson (2005)

Lee's daughter is a voracious reader, and she's the one who keeps me in touch with what young people are reading these days. She's pretty omnivorous, but does have a predilection, a skew, towards books with a supernatural theme.I often end up reading what she leaves lying about. She has good taste and finds fun books so I'm rarely disappointed.Tonight I read the graphic novel The Dead Boy Detectives by Jill Thompson. This is a title from 2005 and it uses several characters created by Neil Gaiman

Live New Hampshire Election Coverage

UPDATED WITH NEW HAMPSHIRE POLLING LOCATIONS (SEE BELOW POST) I arrived in Manchester last night and had dinner with a local activists and good friend. It was interesting to get the scoop from a New Hampshire insider, and now I feel more confident than ever that New Hampshire is actually in play. To be honest, I feel a lot more confident about Pennsylvania going red compared to New Hampshire, but I’m starting to be convinced that both states could possibly break for McCain. I was in Pennsy

“Utterly Bound Up in the Medieval”?

The following passage appeared in the middle of Jill Lepore's article in The New Yorker earlier this summer on the dispute between Anne Carroll Moore, founder of the American children's library and head of the New York exemplar of the form, and Ursula Nordstrom, publisher of E. B. White's Stuart Little. Children’s literature, at least in the West, is utterly bound up in the medieval, as Seth Lerer, a Stanford literature professor, argues in “Children’s Literature: A Reader’s History from Aesop t

Book Worm

I’ve always liked to read. But recently my “like” has turned to what could be termed, “love”, or, “obsession”. (And in turn I could be described as “bookish” or “nerdy” or “geeky”…) If I don’t have something to read I feel a tad lost, as if I have nothing to do. Which is certainly a weird feeling to have since I DO have other things to do (ie: laundry, dishes, sleeping, etc)… but still. If I have no book that I am currently reading, I do feel a strong void. Luckily, however, I really don’t h
