Instamatic Karma by May Pang
May Pang is getting a lot of press with her new book Instamatic Karma. I am sure a lot of people do not even know who May Pang is. She was the woman that John Lennon spent 18 months with in the middle of his marriage to Yoko Ono. That …
A Christmas Gift.
In this exciting time of the year we are in right now, I can't help but be thankful for the stories we have read in AP College English. Most recently we read, by far, my favorite story this year. "Bloodchild" was simply phenomenal. It was a wonderful story, written in the fabulous sci-fi genre. I was completely drawn into the Tlic. What are they? Are they Spiders? Are they Octopuses? Are they human or are they dancers? The questions continued throughout the book, yet simply made me want
Campbell Brown, Sexist Pig
Jump to Comments I learned a long time ago, writing captions for photos in magazines and newspapers, that context is everything. Even pictures can mean vastly different things, depending on context, for example, I can show you a picture of a vacant lot, overgrown with weeds and maybe some typical urban trash. And I can provide you with two captions: Urban permaculture project seeks answers to invasive species problem … or Land use regulations create headaches for developers and eyesores for the
Don't call it a comeback, really: Time's top comeback albums
Don't call it a comeback, really: Time's top comeback albums 5:27 p.m. by Tony Sclafani Way back in 1980, John Lennon released a record after not being heard from for five years. Then he was murdered. Familiar story, right?
Nowhere Man
Editor’s Note: I came thisclose to missing the anniversary of The Beatles’ “Rubber Soul,” my mom’s favorite, and the first Beatles album I ever heard. Even now, when I hear it, I’m back to twirling around in my dad’s office chair (the den had the best speakers), staring at the cover for hours and falling in love with John Lennon. Anyway, Rubber Soul was released 43 years ago today, if you can believe it. Here’s a live performance of “Nowhere Man,” one of the deepest songs on the album. –RA

Obama ditches windfall profit scheme
“Life is what happens while you are busy making other plans.” John Lennon Obama shelves oil company tax after price fall: aide President-elect Barack Obama is not planning to implement a windfall profit tax on oil companies because prices have dropped below $80 a barrel, an aide said on Tuesday. … Obama, who signaled early in his campaign for the White House that he would take an active approach to oil markets as president, had planned to use the revenue from a windfall profits tax to fund

Christmas in Canada: Sarah McLachlan "Wintersong"
Sarah McLachlan’s Christmas album, Wintersong is one of my favorites. It only came out a couple years ago but the songs are so warm and festive that it’s hard to resist. From her excellent reworking of John Lennon’s classic "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" to the amazing (and I mean amazing!) cover of "What Child Is This/Greensleeves," this album is perfect for curling up by a fire with some eggnog or taking a nice peppermint scented soak in the tub. It’s romantic and elegant and I highly reco
Motivating Creative People - Peer Pressures
Photo by My Buffalo The basic thing in my mind was that for all our success The Beatles were always a great little band. Nothing more, nothing less. Paul McCartney Creativity happens between people not, just between the ears. Whatever drives us as individuals, something magical and unpredictable happens when talented creative people get together. They spark off each other — and sparks come from friction. Few people can have known the highs and lows of creative collaboration so intimately

Today’s Pick - Chris Ayer An Award Winning Artist
3 December 2008 POD - Chris Ayer Chris Ayer Today’s pick is the winner in the folk category in the 2006 John Lennon Songwriting Contest. I chose "Evaporate" by Chris Ayer. I found him/her/them over at Podsafe Music Network. As I have mentioned before, one of the most rewarding things about doing a podcast is the correspondence I get to send back and forth between artits, fans and other podcasters. One such person who pops into my inbox from time to time is Jersey Joe. He in his own wor
Vatican 1, Beatles 0: Why the Church still wins after forgiving John Lennon
It took the Vatican 522 years to admit “mea culpa” on the Spanish Inquisition, and 359 years to come around to admitting Galileo was right about the whole Sun and Earth thing. However, it looks like the Church has tightened up its “oops, we’re an ancient bureaucracy and take forever to admit we were wrong” process by forgiving John Lennon only 42 years after his “more popular than Jesus” comment sparked outrage among Christians. Lennon’s absolution should give hope to other pop culture icons
You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away
I’m reading the new John Lennon biography by Beatles historian, Philip Norman, a fascinating and deeply revealing insight into the strife and times of one of music’s truly significant icons. Wrapped up amongst the first person anecdotes, you get a real sense of this complex and somewhat traumatic genius who could have just as easily ended up languishing in a prison cell, such was the venom that often seeped from his angry young self. Of course, history has a habit of correcting itself, and Lenn
Framed!
A while back there was a bit of a brouhaha over how best to present science and/or atheism to the world. Atheists like Dawkins and Hitchens were said to be too “harsh” and “shrill” in their bold and confident assertions that religion was wrong. Advocates for atheism and/or science, it was said, needed to “frame” their arguments, to make them more appealing and less offensive for the average, religiously-minded layperson. Well, some atheists took that advice to heart, and Dinesh D’Souza would l

"Your Cell Phone Makes a Great Camera"
I caught photographer Annie Leibovitz on MSNBC the other morning being interviewed about her new book Annie Leibovitz at Work. She was explaining how photography is a lot of work, and that the famous photograph of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, taken as it turned out on the day of his death and thus acquiring a life of its own, was the product of ten years of photographing him. Anyway, she was asked what she would recommend as a Christmas present, besides her book, e.g. camera equipment. She said,
A Great Forecast for Future Clouds and Radar
As I indicated less than two weeks when featuring Benji Hughes’ excellent A Love Extreme, releasing a double-disc album as a debut can be a risky venture for numerous reasons. Inaccessibility is the primary one for sure, along with a widespread assumption that the release may play by the “quantity over quality” ideology. There is no simple way to avoid these initial beliefs, apart from releasing consistent quality of course. Taking this methodical approach of releasing a debut album with over
The Immortalists by David M. Friedman
Title: The Immortalists Author: David M. Friedman Publisher: Ecco (2007) Everyone knows who Charles Lindbergh is right? Quick…what are the two things he is famous for? I’ll give you some time. Come on…you know this. Yeah, you probably knew right away. Lindbergh was the first person to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. Also, his son (The Lindbergh Baby) was kidnapped and murdered. You know what else he did? A lot, actually. Unfortunately, most of what he accomplished was done with extre
