Old school technology is torture

My kids have no clue what a rotary phone is, and they certainly do not remember Internet access via dialup. They think email is old school. If they can not send and receive messages instantly they think they have missed out on something.
Postage? Get real, you want me to mail …

Television and Kids

I saw an advertisement recently for a new DVD of Looney Tunes. These were the best cartoons of my childhood and we also had some great TV shows to watch, Gilligans Island, Hogan Heroes, The Brady Bunch and Andy Griffith just to name a few.
It is so different now for …

Fathers Day Fun

I hope all the Fathers out there had as much fun as I did on Fathers Day.
My 2 teenagers pitched in a bought me a Mahalo White Flying V Ukulele. I had been looking at the Ukulele as a potential new instrument since seeing the Jake Shimabukuro video of him …

Numbers

The television show Numbers is one of my favorites. I guess that really shows my geek side. Although they push the envelope a little, numbers and math are definetly a major part of life.
I have been reflecting on numbers for this year, and how my age is starting to show.
31 …

Mr. Mom

My lovely wife has been away for a few days, and I am soooo glad she is back !!
I will admit that my teenage daughters are not as hard to take care of as they once were, but, I know that my wife does so much on a daily basis …

Shoot

I bought chocolate last week. The chocolate was supposed to be used to fill the kid's advent calendar The problem with this? I ate it. Can I put a cereal bar in an advent calendar instead? Probably not. Hmmm. This is worse than me forgetting about the tooth fairy, this time there are three kids expecting me to have put something in that advent calendar's little pockets. But I have nothing. Nope, nothing to put in those cute little pouches that my kids check every morning on their way down

Well, the holiday season...

in full swing. I went to the first holiday party of the season for me, what a wild bunch of women that was! Beta girls know how to put on a white elephant exchange! The country club manager and a few curious staff peeked into the room at one point just to see what all the screeching and cackling was about. "I'm charging $50 to let people come in her!" he said. Whoops, were we disturbing the other members? Too Bad, no admittance without an ugly gift, and Kelly, your gift needs to be back at the

Help California Reduce Costs

Good Evening Gentle Readers, After several days of no internet I'm happy to say that we're back on the air. Got my state tax refund today. I know, I know, the cobbler's kids go barefoot and all that. For those of you who went to school in California, a cobbler is an old timey shoemaker. Or if it's my family, a Shuemaker. Except Old Man Shuemaker* was a printer.  Came with a little note, exactly the size of the check, imploring yours truly to file electronically next time and have the refun

angels gather here

When our brother-in-law arrived for Thanksgiving he had gifts for the kids.  Fallon received these two angels and Andy shared that Shannon requested her collection be given to her four nieces.  It was very special to get Angel of Prayer, and Angel of the Heart.   Sunday seemed the perfect time to bring out the Nativity set which matches the angels.  A special frind started me on the collection, adding to it every year.  I found the stable in an unfinished furniture shop - need to add some str

I've been tagged

Miss Chicken Betty has tagged me for a Tree of Happiness Award and my favorite Frizz has tagged me for some randomness. I thought I would comply, since I'm such a nice little fox. Tree of Happiness The rules of this award are: 1. Link to the person who gave the award to you. 2. Post the rules on your blog. 3. List six things that make you happy. 4. Tag six people at the end of your post and link to them. 5. Let each person know they’ve been tagged and leave a comment on their blog 6. Let the

Uncle Louie

Well, my old Uncle Louie died today.  He was a quiet man of few words.  79 years old, a few months shy of 80.  Louie lived a full life.  Isn't that what they say?  But true.  He served in the military, got married, had kids.  Chain-smoked cigarettes, grew old, went on oxygen tanks for years.  Got a brain tumor or something deadly.  Hospice came out.  He kicked them out.  They came back.  He died immediately. You can't sum up a man's life in words, but you can remember him.  My sister reminded

Tap Tap Tap - Anyone Out There

I know it's been a week since I posted and I hope you are still stopping by to see what's new at the Farmhouse. We had a very nice Thanksgiving with some of our family.  My sister was unable to make it at the last minute due to the flu - I encouraged her to stay home, LOL.  But her kids still made the trip which I was very thankful for and enjoyed spending time with them and our kids - small but nice.  Sooooo that meant that the gravy was mine and mine alone to make, LOL.  Here I am trying to

Don't cum in our pool and we won't swim in the small of your lover's back

A friend of mine was sharing with me the exploits of he and his wife during a romantic getaway weekend.  (Without the kids, of course.)  First stop, he explained, was the hotel jacuzzi, where round one took place.  That was as far as the story would go. "You fucked in the public jacuzzi," I inquired.  "Yeah," he proudly answered.  "The PUBLIC jacuzzi," I continued.  "Sure, why not," he replied, undaunted.  "It's a PUBLIC jacuzzi," I barked at him in disgust, "other people have to simmer in the

Celebrating the Month of December: Day by Day

Holiday Manifesto: I will enjoy the quiet moments.  Pay attention to the small things.  Remember to breath.  Do what I can.  Perfection is not a word in my vocabulary.  I will celebrate the shiny happy people I am blessed to spend every day with.  I will reminisce and shed a tear or two, but this season will be about living in the moment.  God Bless us everyone.  Monday, December 1st: We were just coming off a 9 day Thanksgiving Break so facing this Monday morning was a tough one, although t

Last Day

Today was my last class of the semester. It took two trips to my car to load all of the papers and portfolios I have to grade, but I didn't even mind. When I taught high school, I was so happy when the end of the year came. Knowing I had an entire summer to be free of certain students was a wonderful feeling. Today I felt kind of sad. I'm going to miss these kids. Teaching at a University where you are given complete academic freedom is entirely different than teaching high school.  The cla

User Error?

I haven't been able to login to my typepad account here to blog for the past 4 days. I figured it must be something that I was doing wrong, since my friend Karen was able to put up not just one but two posts yesterday. I knew it couldn't be typepad. It must be me. This evening I tried to log on, and oddly enough there was a new log in page... So maybe it wasn't me. Who knows. Regardless, I apologize for being so behind on my posting. For a quick update, we had a lovely Thanksgiving. I hosted he

Nole, Inc. Opens Up A Creatively Named Restaurant

Nole and his family are expanding their burgeoning restaurant and tennis empire by opening a restaurant in Belgrade called "Novak".  You know, just so you don't forget who's putting that Argentinian, Spanish, and Italian fusion food on your table.  Is it just me or does it look straight out of the Crate and Barrel catalog? But the best part I save for last: Remember, kids.  There is no sex in the champagne room. You can see more pics over at Great Tennis Photos here and here.

Tremendous news from the world of TV comedy

The Kids In The Hall are making an eight-part TV mini-series!  These guys are brilliant, and I can't wait to see what they come up with.

Another One [Birthday Party] Bites the Dust

Verdict: I am getting too old for these home-grown parties! Julie's birthday party was finally held this afternoon, and it was an undeniable success, despite one minor injury incurred during a vigorous game of Fishy Fishy Cross My Ocean, one bout of sadness, one stomach ache, and a few whining whiny whiners. My big fear was that we'd run out of activities, but luckily we didn't. Some of the girls didn't want to play the more active games, and others claimed they were bored by the sedentary ac

One Hundred Years of Debate on Concealed Carry

So, everybody at Vandy and their grandmother has weighed in on concealed carry as of late: Mike Warren wrote an editorial for the Hustler many moons ago about how lifting the ban on handguns on campus would deter the somewhat frequent muggings. Stuart Hill responded in the negative, referencing Virginia Tech. The debate in the December issue of the Torch is on concealed carry (with the stupidest titles we could think of): Trevor Williams's "99 Problems, But Guns Ain't One" vs. Douglas Kurdziel

Watch out! Mum on the warpath!

We have some new neighbours just moved in two doors down from us.  My son is thrilled to bits as the little girl in the family is in his class at school.  I am started to feel less than thrilled myself as these people already seeming keen to "stretch the friendship".  As you will all know from reading my blog, I work full time outside the home as does my husband.  Consequently our evenings after we are all home from school/after school care are pretty busy and I don't really cope all that well

Listening to Christmas music on Pandora right now.

We're revamping Christmas this year. Normally we don't do much Christmas related stuff in December, then fly to my parents for Christmas, where the children rip through wrapping paper like Tasmanian Devils. The trouble is, come March they can't remember a single present they received. So I'm on a quest to make Christmas more memorable. I started off the season in my usual stellar fashion by completely forgetting that Advent started last Sunday. Oops. Yeah, and I can't find our wreath, and hav

A cardboard Christmas!

Thursday, December 4, 2008 -- 6:22 p.m. In my last post, I mentioned options for a greener Christmas tree--including buying local, pesticide-free live trees and trees with roots.  Well, here's another option: The Cardboard Christmas Tree! Cloud Gate Design LLC, a local company started by two Chicago guys, designed the tree--which is made from recycled cardboard. It's 3 feet tall and comes with 50 ornaments ... which are cardboard, of course. I love it! Especially the part where you de

Summer Christmas Inspiration

Some Christmas traditions are great thats true - but this year I feel the need to do some things NEW!  I don't have to scratch my surface to deep to find I am actually feeling tired/stressed and Not all that in the hoho Mood. Do you ever feel like that? I love the Australian coast. My favourite beaches are the rough wild deserted ones - and lucky for us we have plenty of them! There are our 2 boys waving back at me! They are yelling out "MUuuuUUUuuuM take a photo"!   I alw
