Man of the Year Tag Page

Flags of our Fathers

I tried to watch this movie last night. I fell asleep.
I am sure the meaning of everything going on was too deep for me, but the movie just moved way to slow and jumped around too much to keep my interest.
I did watch and enjoy Man of the Year. Robin …

Sharon Shinn: an interview

by Mary Jo I first discovered the romantic fantasy of Sharon Shinn when her second book, Archangel, was recommended on a romance reader list.  I was somewhat dubious—the cover was sort of bleak and could have been horror—but the list had given good suggestions before, so I took a chance. Bingo!  Archangel was a wonderful tale of a world where modified human “angels” can fly and sing to the heavens to control weather, bring down medications, etc.  It was a dazzling world, one that I wished

20 Questions

According to this article  one in five young adults has a personality disorder. That’s not news to me. I’ve seen how they dress and listened to enough of their music to know for certain that figure is correct. To be fair, that figure was probably not a lot smaller in 1980 when I finished high school. We just had much better music. Young adults are faced with a complex world, and wrong choices about school, work, partners, etc. can have real serious consequences. My father, who ran a bank trust

Tap Tap Tap - Anyone Out There

I know it's been a week since I posted and I hope you are still stopping by to see what's new at the Farmhouse. We had a very nice Thanksgiving with some of our family.  My sister was unable to make it at the last minute due to the flu - I encouraged her to stay home, LOL.  But her kids still made the trip which I was very thankful for and enjoyed spending time with them and our kids - small but nice.  Sooooo that meant that the gravy was mine and mine alone to make, LOL.  Here I am trying to

OK, so at least we'll install the car seat this weekend.

HOOOOOO BOY, did the comments on that last post give me a chuckle. Trust me when I say that above all else, they were helpful. I had not thought about something as simple as just making a list and placing it somewhere near the bag, for instance. I have said before that I am not much of an outside-the-box thinker, so to someone like me, “packing a bag” means… well, PACKING A BAG. As in, I believed I should have prepared a fully packed suitcase with everything I could possibly need and want ready

A Brother Strangles his Sister in Honor Killing

By Yasmine S. Hakimian Impunity Watch Reporter, Middle East JERASH, Jordan - On December 1, an unidentified Jordanian man was sentenced to seven-and-a-half years in prison for strangling his 16-year-old married sister. Using wire and his sister’s scarf, the 20-year-old man strangled his sister to cleanse his family’s honor. The man testified it took 30 minutes to strangle his sister to death. He killed her in January in the Gaze refugee camp in the town of Jerash after she visited a female fr

Sen. Lisa Boscola (D-Jury)

This, from Morning Call court reporter Riley Yates.... Even as a juror, state Sen. Lisa Boscola has a way of winning elections. Boscola was made foreman of a Northampton County jury that presided last week over a case of a man accused of trying to lure an Easton teen into his car last year. The jury acquitted the man on six misdemeanor counts, with Boscola – Juror No. 7 – reading the verdict. That Boscola, who lives in Bethlehem Township, even made it onto the panel brought some raised eyebr

No Place to Go But UP

The Big Kahuna Top Dog at my company came to speak on Tuesday. He is always insightful and interesting, but in this housing market I was especially interested in hearing his thoughts. First, housing buys are absolutely the best they've every been. In 1981 when he opened the company, interest rates were 16-17 percent. Right now we have a lot of inventory and low rates. One agent said she received a quote on Monday for 5 percent. Today's news is all about the Treasury intervening with a pl

The next election

Jump to Comments The Shrieking Man has some interesting comments on the current state of South African politics as we prepare for next year’s general election. Things seem to be in a state of flux, when a recent survey on the president’s performance producing an unusually high proportion of “don’t knows”. Anyway, here’s The Shrieking Man’s table of ideologies for the established parties: Party Percentage of vote in 2004 Professed ideology ANC 69% 60% social democracy, 30% neoliberalism, 10% blac

Remembering Tylor

Four years ago Tylor Tayrien, a student involved in our Youthfront Leadership program, tragically died in an ice related traffic accident.  I wrote about this unique young man in the Introduction of Presence Centered Youth Ministry.  Tylor lived the cruciform life and the Gospel resonnated from him in a powerful way.  In the epilogue of PCYM I told the story of a young man totally unchurched who surrendered his life to Jesus Christ shortly after Tylor died because of Tylor's testimony.  Here is

Miami Dolphins trying to salvage Paul Soliai

Defensive lineman Paul Soliai is, by the account of teammates and coaches, a good-hearted kid. But as a professional football player he's probably too much of a kid. That is one reason former Utah coach Urban Meyer, a disciple of discipline, didn't like Soliai too much. That is one reason former Miami coach Cam Cameron also didn't like Soliai a whole lot and made him inactive half of 2007. That is one reason Soliai has been suspended twice this season by the Dolphins. Soliai is expected back

How to end the war

The Sun is my favorite magazine. I was reading the December issue, which contained a spoof political piece by the man who calls himself Sparrow. He writes: "We are close the fifth year of the disastrous American occupation of Iraq. Nearly four thousand US soldiers have died, and uncounted number of Iraqi citizens. Why is there so little public outrage in the United States over this ruthless, heart-stabbing war? I can see by one reason: only human beings are dying. Unfortunately we must demand

What's in a Name?

I've heard it all my life: What kind of name is that? You must not be from here. You must be foreign. Actually, no. I was born in the USA, a 48 year old man with a Macedonian 1st and Last Name (Slightly Americanized when my Father immigrated in 1951) and grew up in Southern California. An article from Yahoo News tells how folks like me are... "hopeful that change is coming, that the idea of an "American" name will expand beyond monikers like Tom and Harry and Sally and Jane and Smith a

Thanks and A Glimpse Into My Week!

Kristi, girl, you were actually a great help! Can you believe I had never played around with the fonts and colors since first starting my blog 3 years ago?? I just had so much fun changing a few things around! The last time anything was changed on here, design wise, it was done by my friend Amber. So at least I know I can change colors and fonts now. Yea me! I'm still a little disappointed that I don't know how to get the photo of my tree centered or at least get my text in the red area to the r

Scavenging to become a 21st-century artform?

Ripped from the wires ... A Colorado writer extols the virtues of modern-day trashpicking, touting it as a habit we might all have to learn: By Craig Childs A farm couple in Colorado opened their fields in November to gleaners, giving away what was left of their harvest. Expecting about 5,000 people to show up, they were shocked when 40,000 arrived. This might be a sign of the times. As the economy plummets, we enter an environment ripe for scavengers. From field gleaners to garage-sale afici

Azerbaijanis Complete Tour in Iraq Thursday, 04 December 2008 CAMP RIPPER — For the past five years, servicemembers from a small country approximately the size of South Carolina have been providing vital security for one of Iraq’s major sources of power, the Haditha Dam. On Dec. 3, Coalition forces recognized the hard work and efforts made by Soldiers from the 1st Azerbaijani Peacekeeping Company during the past year, for their mission in Iraq is over and the Soldiers will be re
