Benoit Denizet-Lewis talks to Barney Frank about his personal life, the recent economic bail-out, campaigning, and gay rights legislation in a new Advocate cover story. In the piece, Frank discusses his House reprimand for a relationship with a male prostitute who said he ran an escort service out of Frank's apartment: " I was not emotionally healthy back when I was closeted. I was very fat, very disheveled, and I now know that job satisfaction is no substitute for personal satisfaction. [The

King patient, ignored by staff, would have survived with aid
An official Los Angeles County assessment has acknowledged for the first time that a woman who died shortly after writhing in pain for nearly an hour on the waiting room floor of Martin Luther King Jr.-Harbor Medical Center could have been saved if she had been properly treated. Edith Rodriguez was captured on security videotape as a janitor mopped around her and a triage nurse dismissed her complaints in the early morning of May 9, 2007. Her death helped to precipitate the closure of the hos
RIP Odetta
Odetta, the folk singer with the powerful voice who moved audiences and influenced fellow musicians for a half-century, died Tuesday Dec. 2, 2008. She was 77. Odetta’s monumental voice rang out in August 1963 when she sang “I’m on My Way” at the historic March on Washington, where Martin Luther King gave his “I Have a Dream” speech. She had hoped to perform again in Washington next month when Barack Obama is inaugurated as the nation’s first black president. Sundace Line-up Announced
The “old” year isn’t closed yet but we’re about to jump into a new cycle of film viewing and Sundance has announced their 2009 line-up of films, a handful of which we’ll get to see in the new year with a peppering of a few more that will likely end up on some shelf somewhere. My first thought checking out the list is that there’s nothing all that outstanding in the dramatic competitions though there are some great sounding documentaries. A few that did catch my attention: John Hindman’s Arl

Civil Rights Movement inspires Blacks abroad
George E. Curry, Chicago Defender - A trip from Gatwick Airport to London’s central city is visible confirmation that national entities are no longer restricted to imaginary geographical boundaries. But the leading U.S. import for Blacks living in the United Kingdom is the modern Civil Rights Movement. That was made clear repeatedly recently as an American delegation accompanied Jesse Jackson to London, Birmingham, Leicester, Nottingham and Liverpool. Everywhere he went in the U.K., the civi

SUNDANCE 2009: US Competition Docs Spotlight World Preems from Berlinger, Cutler, DiCillo, Garbus, Metzgar, Pray and Timoner
It's one of the most exciting times of the year here at the blog - the end of one season, celebrated by Oscar shortlists, Spirit Award nominations, IDA celebrations and critics lists, and the beginning of the next, seen first in Amsterdam at IDFA and now the unveiling of Sundance's Class of 2009. Each year when we reach this point, it's hard to remember when titles like MAN ON WIRE, TROUBLE THE WATER, ORDER OF MYTHS or ROMAN POLANSKI: WANTED AND DESIRED were unknown quantities. So it is with

In central Alabama’s Perry County, government workers already get a day off for President’s Day, Martin Luther King Day, and Veterans Day. In 2009, they’ll get one more: “Barack Obama Day.” The rural county, which overwhelmingly supported Obama in last month’s presidential election, has approved the second Monday in November as “The Barack Obama Day.” Commissioners passed a measure that would close county offices for the new annual holiday and its roughly 40 workers will get a paid day off. The Gospel According to Jack Black: An Anti-Prop 8 Fiasco
I guess it isn’t shocking that Hollywood decides to stigmatize and stereotype people of faith. However, this is spectacularly … ignorant. More thoughts and video after the jump. Warning: the following video is offensive to just about everybody. Or at least I would hope that would be the case. See more Jack Black videos at Funny or Die So… It would seem that Jack’s version of Jesus is stuck in the Old Testament and completely ignorant of how Jesus would not flippantly disregard the

NYC Bus System Operates On Honor System
In the wake of the murder of New York City busdrive Edwin Thomas Monday, the NY Times has unearthed an interesting wrinkle about the city’s bus system: You don’t really have to pay your fare. Drivers are trained to encourage resistant riders to pay their fare, but are told not to challenge them to do so, so as to avoid confrontations like the one that killed Thomas, a father of two. So begins a story in today’s paper: A young man waited for about a dozen other people to board the B46 bus on
