Immigration - Break it down

This is big. And if we do not get it under control it could easily escalate to things we do not want. The biggest problem is that everyone wants a comprehensive solution after ignoring the problem for decades.
DON”T EAT THE ELEPHANT IN ONE BITE, Break it down.

In Mexico

AFP reports, "Mexican state wants death sentence for kidnappers," via Google News. Coahuila state lawmakers have proposed the death penalty be reinstated for kidnappings that end in murder, a crime Coahuila's governor said should be punished by firing squad, hanging or throat slashing. State lawmakers late Tuesday voted 22 to 10 to propose a constitutional amendment to allow state governments to reinstate the death penalty for lethal kidnapping, four years after it was abolished nationwide, sp

Cheated by 'Religulous,' He Wonders, Why the Double Standard in U.S. Culture for Israel?

A few weeks back I ran a friend's review of "Religulous" that pointed out Bill Maher's double-standard for Christian evangelicals and Jews. A man who just saw the film--"Rand Meko"--found that review online, and sent me the following note:I felt cheated by Religulous. I thought a number of groups not only got off free, but there was a very distinct melding of specific politics and religion - something Bill Maher seemed to be vehemently against. I appreciated you opening up the discussion.  It s

Local sayings

A couple of weeks ago I was hanging out with LK and my sister. We had just finished our delicious dinner of cheap Mexican food and were washing it down with a nice bottle of Riesling when the topic of teeth came up. I'm sure I mentioned something about how petrified I get when I go to the dentist and my sister regaled us with the tale of how she broke her tooth when she was a teenager. "I was divin' into my friends below grown pool and I came up too close to the edge and cracked my front toot

Life Wouldn't Be Worth Living

If we couldn't "Ride Like the Wind."  We're talking, of course, about the great song off Christopher Cross' eponymous debut album, which spawned 72 No. 1 hits.  "Ride" is great because while it's mellow it's also fast-paced, even (as you can tell by the congas) "dangerous."  With its edgy lyrics (CC's making a run for the Mexican border!) offset by the soothing balm of Michael McDonald's backing vocals, it's the perfect song for daredevils looking to walk that safety razor's edge between "smoot

The Misadventures of Oliver Booth [Stacey's Review]

It's funny how an unlikable character can sometimes become the hinge that holds together so many likable ones. Stacey found that in The Misadventures of Oliver Booth. Here's an excerpt from her blog, book:thirty Oliver Booth is an unlikeable, unsympathetic, unethical buffoon. Passing off Mexican imports as European antiques, Booth occupies a small shop and apartment just off (as in, around the corner from) Palm Beach's trendy Worth Avenue. He's nearly $3000 behind in his electric bill and hasn

Thanks and A Glimpse Into My Week!

Kristi, girl, you were actually a great help! Can you believe I had never played around with the fonts and colors since first starting my blog 3 years ago?? I just had so much fun changing a few things around! The last time anything was changed on here, design wise, it was done by my friend Amber. So at least I know I can change colors and fonts now. Yea me! I'm still a little disappointed that I don't know how to get the photo of my tree centered or at least get my text in the red area to the r

Jack Goes To Hooters

I'm getting up to leave the table when she approaches me.Girl: "Hey Jack, I heard from one of the other girls that youhave some blog?"Jack: (I smile) "Uhh, I don't know what your talkingabout."Girl: "C'mon, tell me how to find it."Jack: "Just Google Jack, Bartender, Richmond."Girl: "Okay. I can't wait to read it."Jack: "Awesome." This happened at Hooters last night with a waitress that I barely know. Now I know what you're thinking, Hooter's girls can read?!? I was shocked too.And yes I was gett

News: Taliban Drug Cartel; & Mexican Drug Cartels

***  "The Taliban Is a Drug Cartel and Should Be Attacked as Such": The latest report on Afghanistan's opium economy from the U.N.'s drug tsar, Antonio Maria Costa, only confirms what sensible people foretold six years ago: that the Wars on Drugs and Terror are inexorably linked. * * * [T]he West's failure to aggressively battle Afghanistan's drug trade has enriched the Taliban, institutionalized corruption, impeded government control, and cemented the trafficking routes that also carry weapo

'Mr. White' back in action Thursday

Santos Laguna scored five goals in its last two games. Toluca hasn't allowed a goal in seven games. The two teams meet on Thursday when Santos hosts Toluca in the first leg of the Mexican league semifinals at 7 p.m. (Azteca America). Toluca will host the second game on Sunday at 12 p.m. (Telemundo). Fire midfielder Cuauhtemoc Blanco is on loan with Santos for the playoffs and has been a force for los Guerreros. Mr. White scored in a 2-1 win over San Luis on Saturday and had a hand in a few

Top prosecutor falls victim to cartel assassination

The drug cartel war has taken the life of another top Mexican law enforcement official. Jesus Martin Huerta, the No. 2 federal prosecutor in Juarez, is dead after being shot in the head. He is one of the highest ranking officials to be gunned down in the intense battle between drug cartels vying for control of the lucrative border corridor. Huerta was shot by two gunmen as he sat in his car while it was stopped at an intersection.  More than 1,700 people have been murdered in Juarez this year

Two camels found wandering in Mexican city near U.S. border

Lost & Found: Two camels were found wandering the streets of Juarez, Mexico, according to the El Paso Times. The Associated Press says a caretaker eventually lured Yull and Tobi back to the warehouse where they were being held by a businessman who plans to build an amusement park near the U.S. border.

For someone who never wears heels but would like to start, are there any styles or designers that you recommend for comfort?-Meg Wedges are the most comfortable shoes, and I find high-heeled boots very easy to walk in because boots tend to give you more stability. Dries van Noten and Alaia shoes are the most well-designed in terms of comfort, in my experience! Do the beaded/sequinned Dries van Noten shoes from Spring 08 run true to size?-Brigadeiro Dries van Noten tends to run a little small,

California broadcaster to build U.S. Latin network

Dec 2, 2008 By Ayala Ben-Yehuda Liberman Broadcasting has emerged as a scrappy competitor to its rivals Univision and Telemundo, producing 56 hours of original programing in its Burbank, California, studios every week. Now Liberman -- which owns Spanish-language TV and radio station clusters in Los Angeles, Houston, Dallas and Phoenix -- is hoping to build a national network called Estrella TV. Through a combination of station purchases and affiliates, Liberman expects Estrella TV to

Novena to Our Lady of Guadalupe

Novena to Our Lady of Guadalupe (repost) Yes! Another novena. This one is my favorite novena to Our Lady of Guadalupe. Her feast is December 12th. Isn't the beginning of Advent rich? In our family, we are praying the Novena before the Feast of the Immaculate Conception and we will add this one, too.I find that candles lit for the novenas help to capture the children's attention and these prayers are not so very long. My children seem very happy to be drawn into the season of feasts. So, there

Just a few questions

Dashiell I watched the unveiling of Barack Obama’s “national security team,” and I have some questions for him. Why is there not a single person on the team who opposed the invasion of Iraq in 2003? I’m not suggesting that every person you appoint should have been right about the war, but I think it’s reasonable to expect at least one non-hawk appointee. One of your main selling points in the campaign was that you were opposed to this war. I don’t see why your appointments shouldn’t reflect that

Sundance Watch: Line-Up Announced

Todd McCarthy talks to Sundance Film fest director Geoff Gilmore about the Sundance 2009 competition feature, documentary and world cinema line-ups. One can only hope that given the current economic climate, last year reps the attendance peak of a fest that desperately needs to scale back anyway; if a lot of companies and folks can't make it this year, I'm going to be greedy and selfish and say, "all the more for us!" Even during the frantic party swag-hog years, it was always possible to tun

Sundace Line-up Announced

The “old” year isn’t closed yet but we’re about to jump into a new cycle of film viewing and Sundance has announced their 2009 line-up of films, a handful of which we’ll get to see in the new year with a peppering of a few more that will likely end up on some shelf somewhere. My first thought checking out the list is that there’s nothing all that outstanding in the dramatic competitions though there are some great sounding documentaries. A few that did catch my attention: John Hindman’s Arl
