An Illegal Alien Allegory

I received this in an email, and there is no obvious credit given to the original author. It is worth posting. Excellent analogy of the Illegal Alien debate.
“Recently large demonstrations have taken place across the country protesting the fact that Congress is finally addressing the issue of illegal immigration. …

Immigration - Break it down

This is big. And if we do not get it under control it could easily escalate to things we do not want. The biggest problem is that everyone wants a comprehensive solution after ignoring the problem for decades.
DON”T EAT THE ELEPHANT IN ONE BITE, Break it down.
Work on the border …

Made it!

Four hour red-eye from SFO to Mexico City, 9 hour layover consisting of one BAD ASS tour of the city, kick ass Aztec ruins, another flight, rental car, harrowing drive, and we're finally here in Akumal! Our place is amazing, and we're steps from the beach. Best honeymoon EVAR! IMG_3677.JPG That's the ORIGINAL Virgin of Guadalupe. No, not an original painting... It's the actual cloak that her image became imprinted on when she was revealed to the bishop. That's some OG Catholic sh

Heidi's mom gives Speidi's marriage 6 months

Posted 3:50 p.m., Dec. 4 Like everyone else, Heidi's mom Darlene doesn't like Spencer. Here's what she told UsWeekly about Heidi's marriage to Spencer. "I think it's the biggest mistake Heidi's ever made," she said. We think so too. And she says what we've all been thinking too about her new son-in-law: "He's manipulative and seems to have power over Heidi," she said. "I would like to see a blood test from Mexico. It wouldn’t surprise me if he had her drugged." Well, the last part is a

Christmas Traditions

I guess because I just wrote a bit about this for the Savvy Source Philadelphia blog, I've been thinking about my holiday traditions, and the ones I want to share with my daughter. This makes me think about the traditions I grew up with and what my favorite memories of Christmas are. My most intense memories are of my maternal grandparent's house. They lived far, far away from us in St. Joseph, Illinois (we were in Albuquerque when I was little). So the first memory comes from the long, long d

NEWSLETTER

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving break. We have a very busy month ahead of us.  Currently we are learning about different modes of transportation. Next we will be learning about holidays around the world and how they relate to American culture and diverse community and family celebrations and customs.  This unit is directly related to our Social Studies standards (SSKG1). We will culminate this unit with a "trip" around the world! Every class will visit all the other "K" classes and

No mirage as camels wander in Texas border town

It was not a mirage in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico where two camels were seen wandering. Police tried lassoing the animals, which lunged at the officers with snapping teeth as onlookers chuckled. But in the end, officials say all it took was some juicy green leaves on a branch held by the caretaker to lure the camels back into captivity. Police spokesman Jaime Torres says the camels named Yull and Tobi escaped early Wednesday from the warehouse of a businessman, who had bought the animals for a p

I-35 Supertrain

The President-elect has suggested that building green infrastructure should be a component of his plan to boost the economy. I agree. And I've said here before that it should be 30-year property, things that continue to pay for themselves many times over in the course of their useful lives. So here is a modest proposal. Train tracks. Trains save energy over other forms of transportation. Train tracks are cheaper to build than highways. We should start with one in particular, a line that wi

AFP reports, "Mexican state wants death sentence for kidnappers," via Google News. Coahuila state lawmakers have proposed the death penalty be reinstated for kidnappings that end in murder, a crime Coahuila's governor said should be punished by firing squad, hanging or throat slashing. State lawmakers late Tuesday voted 22 to 10 to propose a constitutional amendment to allow state governments to reinstate the death penalty for lethal kidnapping, four years after it was abolished nationwide, sp

Opening of the Worf Press Photo exhibition in Cankarjev dom in Ljubljana

4 December, 2008 On Monday at 18.00 in Cankarjev dom there will be an opening of World Press Photo exhibition! I think it’s great to have Word Press Photo exhibition again in Slovenia. I’m really happy that Cankarjev dom pulled it off! Chris de Bode an art director of Fotopub have a lot of friends at WPP and I know how hard it is to organize this show and that is very expensive. At Fotopub we couldn’t pull it off, but I congratulation to Cankarjev dom that they managed. The least I can do is t

CBD Secretariat Issues Publication on the Use of Gap Analysis for Identifying Potential REDD Sites

3 December 2008: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has recently published material regarding the relevance of its Programme of Work on Protected Areas (PoWPA) gap analysis, which guides parties in identifying gaps in protected areas systems and in participation of indigenous and local communities, in relation to reducing emissions for deforestation and forest degradation (REDD). Many of the identified areas that lack protection are also potential sites for REDD.

ENFORCEMENT FIRST IS WORKING

Now some of my pro-immigration cohorts may be upset with me for saying this - but I think the Center for Immigration Studies is right about something important. We know from various government and other reports that the number of unlawfully present immigrants in this country has been rapidly declining over the last year or so. Pro-immigration groups are blaming the recession. CIS and other anti-immigration groups are saying that the ramped up enforcement at the border and at work sites around t

AeroMexico adding San Francisco, Denver and Toronto

AeroMexico's expansion into Canada begins Feb. 2 with one daily round-trip flight between Toronto and Mexico City. "Launching service in Canada is an important part of AeroMexico'

Secure Borders

74% Say Government Not Doing Enough to Secure Borders   Seventy-four percent (74%) of U.S. voters continue to believe the federal government is not doing enough to secure the country's borders, even as President-elect Obama has named a new secretary of Homeland Security who is opposed to a border fence. This could be real trouble for Obama. The violence in Mexico continues to escalate. The fence building is running behind, sometimes delayed by politicians.  If Obama is going to be a practical

Crazy Cool Race: Gran Jaguar Triathlon 2009

If you've been reading this web site for a while you'll know that we like to feature Crazy Hard Races. Today we found a crazy cool race: Gran Jaguar Triathlon in Tikal, Guatemala. Imaging racing in the shadows of the ancient Maya temples. News: Taliban Drug Cartel; & Mexican Drug Cartels

***  "The Taliban Is a Drug Cartel and Should Be Attacked as Such": The latest report on Afghanistan's opium economy from the U.N.'s drug tsar, Antonio Maria Costa, only confirms what sensible people foretold six years ago: that the Wars on Drugs and Terror are inexorably linked. * * * [T]he West's failure to aggressively battle Afghanistan's drug trade has enriched the Taliban, institutionalized corruption, impeded government control, and cemented the trafficking routes that also carry weapo

What Will Arnold Schwarzenegger's Next Role Be?

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – With Arnold Schwarzenegger's governorship entering its final years and his ability to attract the spotlight intact, one question is arising more frequently: What will Arnold do? Will he share the stage with Al Gore as a global environmental crusader, promote green technology for a Barack Obama administration, run for the U.S. Senate? Or might he pursue political reform on a broader scale, as he has hinted in appearances with New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who shar

Two camels found wandering in Mexican city near U.S. border

Lost & Found: Two camels were found wandering the streets of Juarez, Mexico, according to the El Paso Times. The Associated Press says a caretaker eventually lured Yull and Tobi back to the warehouse where they were being held by a businessman who plans to build an amusement park near the U.S. border.

Civic Doodie

Today was a most special day for me - jury duty. It was the first time in a while that I’ve been called to jury duty and a lot has changed since the last time I was called. I was shocked that I had wireless internet access and a quiet room where I could lose even more hours of my life wasting time on the internet. When you are penalty-boxed in a jury pool of #s 01-700, it makes a big difference having immediate access to your facebook status updates.  It’s also important to scope out the jury po

Man tells story of growing up hispanic in the U.S.

December 02, 2008 BY Elissa Dickey Andy Garcia remembers the first thing he ate as a United States citizen. "That was the best Big Mac the Garcias ever had," said Garcia, a Mexico native. Garcia, of Plano, Texas, spoke to about a dozen people at Aberdeen's Ramada Inn on Monday at a diversity workshop hosted by the Aberdeen Police Department. He discussed the cultural issues of a growing Hispanic community. "I am one of those that came to this country with very little ... and a big, big dream
