Van Halen Tour Cancelled?

Rumors are that the Van Halen tour is being canceled due to Eddie Van Halen having issues. What a shame, I really thought this tour might help Eddie, especially with his son Wolfgang playing bass. I know when I saw them back in the late eighties it was Michael Anthony …

Here's who I'm feeling. And you?

Predictions for this week, just because. Add yours, with a comment or two on how/why you think it will turn out the way you do, and whoever I determine is closest gets a Friday Night Rewind tee-shirt. If you ask nice, I'll even have the entire preps staff autograph it. Oh, you know you want it bad: TAMPA CATHOLIC 35, GULLIVER PREP 34: With their struggles last week on offense, it's easy to forget that the Crusaders were pretty potent during the regular season, scoring more than 30 six times.

Heat 93, Jazz 89

Observations from Wednesday's 93-89 victory over the Jazz at EnergySolutions Arena: A 3-2 western swing. Nothing wrong with that. And that's with the one-point loss to the Clippers being a "could've been". Dwyane Wade, Joel Anthony and Michael Beasley all were called for two fouls in the first quarter. Somehow the Heat's bench kept it afloat all the way to a 47-45 halftime lead. Daequan Cook again came to the rescue off the bench, with 10 fir

Dark Knight - Exclusive Clip Posted by Jordan Hoffman on 12/03 at 03:59 PM In this exclusive peek from The Dark Knight’s collection of DVD special features, we get a look at Gotham Tonight’s spotlight on controversial cop Jim Gordon. Bat-fans ought to lose their minds at the realistic portrayal of the events of Batman Begins. And while Anthony Michael Hall isn’t in this clip (he’s in others) the cementing of GCN as a fine news source comes across perfectly. Dig all our Dark Knigh

The 2009 Independent Spirit Awards Nominate A Bunch Of Movies You’ve Probably Never Heard Of

It’s hard enough keeping track of all the important, semi-important, and completely pointless award ceremonies this time of year without the Independent Spirit Awards nominating a full slate of movies the majority of the movie-going population has never even heard of. Still, the nominees for the self-proclaimed “Anti-Oscars” do provide a decent barometer for which smaller films are a good bet to translate over to mainstream award contention. Which means movies like Rachel Getting Married, The

The State of the Race: Flying Blind

We’re putting the cart before the horse For the first time as far back as I can remember  most of the films being bandied about for the Big Oscar Five have not reviewed by the critics nor put to the test with the public.  While box office probably doesn’t matter so much for films that aren’t expected to break the bank opening weekend, it matters more for the bigger Oscar movies, Benjamin Button, Frost/Nixon and perhaps Revolutionary Road. Only two movies, Milk and Slumdog, have been put t

The Guests Make Our Job Easy!

The guests make our job easy!   There are many reasons for the success of our radio program and one of the biggest is the incredible guests to whom we have access. At the end of each year we’re afforded an opportunity for reflection.  In thinking back on everything that’s happened during a very eventful year in The Political Cesspool, I thought it’d be neat to go back and take a look at all of the folks we’ve talked to on-air since June.    The list, in chronological order (beginning with our pr

LosCon, in Brief

Some quick, very loosely organized thoughts on LosCon 35: * First, the bottom line: One of my best convention experiences ever. And in no small part that is due to the LosCon con committee, which went out of its way to make sure I was happy and taken care of. Now, admittedly, I’m a cheap date — give me Double-Doubles and Coke Zero and I’m a happy boy — but on the other hand, even a cheap date likes to feel special, and the LosCon folks really did an excellent job of that. If you ever get a

Yes. I really do not watch a lot of television so I feel odd telling you about two television opportunties you need to be sure to set yoru televisions to either auto turn the channels or set the DVRs to record.  First there is The Librarian as I mentioned last night (I have my DVR programmed to record the first two already) and now I want to tell you about a series that Turner Classic Movies is airing in conjuction with Disney in honor of the holiday season. Neighbors in the community of Far Rockaway, New York, met with New York City Council member James J. Sanders (D-Queens) and Nassau Legis. Jeff Toback (D-Oceanside) to protest a tittilating strip club billboard sign. According to Newsday, the area where the Platinum Club’s “Gentleman’s Club” billboard, which features a large breasted woman wearing skimpy leather straps, is primarily Orthodox Jews, who find the billboard to be “offensive” and “open pornography”. Bloomberg: "We Can Do Better"

In this week's Observer, there's an interesting Mike Bloomberg story that details his "coming down to earth." Apparently he's moving from the sublime of national aspirations, to the ridiculousness of local politics: "Mayor Michael Bloomberg has returned to planet Earth. With a white-cheeked gibbon swinging from branch to branch and a Malayan Tapir drooping its head over a muddy puddle behind him at the Bronx Zoo, on Nov. 24, Mr. Bloomberg explained why, after all the talk over the last couple o

In Final Days of Tipping Point Race, Addabbo and Maltese Pulled Out All Stops by Andrew J. Hawkins - The Capitol

Read original...On the Sunday two weeks before the election, Sen. Charles Schumer (D) was endorsing Council Member Joseph Addabbo (D-Queens) for State Senate at a senior center in Howard Beach, when he was interrupted by his vibrating cell phone.Without pausing, he underhand-tossed it to an aide.“It’s Reid,” he said, referring to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and offering a brief glimpse into Schumer’s other job as head of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. Under his lead

The Truth Revealed

Forget the clashes with coaches, the bad-boy labels and the stabbing?Boston’s championship wiped all that away. But there’s still something bothering the Celtics’ Paul Pierce DOES WINNING matter anymore? When sports are considered more entertainment than competition; when seasons and playoffs stretch for so long in so naked a grab for revenue that the off-season feels like a week; when players make so much money that one game lost, one or two or three seasons lost, can’t affect the way they l

The Tuesday Ten: Ten Hottest SNL Cast Members (Male)

This is the natural counterpart to last month’s list of hot SNL ladies, and you know, I thought this would be easier.  There are generally more men in each year’s cast than women, after all.  And yet … it wasn’t. 1. Jimmy Fallon. I sort of hate myself for putting Fallon first.  He’s smug, laughs at his own jokes, and thought himself and his in-crowd crew with Horatio Sanz better than other cast members.  But he’s also adorable, does a hilarious Barry Gibb, and has been duly punished for his hu

2009 Independent Spirit Awards Nominations

It’s impossible to pay attention to all the movie awards announcements each year, because there are just so many of them. But the Independent Spirit Awards is one of the second tier (read: non-Academy/Globe) Awards shows that I actually respect and pa attention to. Today the 2009 Indie Spirit nominations were announced. Frozen River and Ballast lead with six nominations each, followed by Rachel Getting Married with five nominations, The Wrestler, Milk, Vicky Cristina Barcelona and The Visitor
