Kmic, Mount Union triumph in Division III football playoffs; three No. 1 seeds lose

There are eight teams remaining in the Division III football playoffs, although they aren't necessarily the eight squads you would have thought heading into the tournament. Three No. 1 seeds - North Central, Williamette and Millsaps - lost this weekend. The lone remaining No. 1 seed is national title favorite Mount Union, which advanced after an easy 42-7 victory over Hobart. Mount Union running back Nate Kmic became Division III's all-time leading rusher during the game, and now has 7,449 ca

It's the most wonderful time of the year

By Bruce Hammond The Pigskin Podcast No, not Christmas. It's playoff time in the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA), Division II and Division III. It's the right way to finish off the season -- on the field. On Tuesday's edition of "Pardon the Interruption" co-host Tony Kornheiser said the great thing about the Bowl Championship Series is that every game counts and is extremely exciting right now in the Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I-A). I despise th

YPPSYS College Football Game Predictions and Results - 2008 Season - Week 14 - Week and Thanksgiving Weekend of Saturday, November 29, 2008

Update: It was a rough prognosticaton week in Division I-A FBS football as we were only 28-13 in calling the winners and a poor 18-21-2 against the spread. In addition, we were 7-1 in our predictions of the winners in the Division I-AA FCS playoffs, 2-2 in the Division II playoffs, and 7-1 in the Division III playoffs - where all predictions were made using the YPPSYS system. Hence we were 44-17 in predicting the winner overall. Our record for the season is now 636-204 in calling game winners an

11 Undefeated Football Teams You Don’t Care About

I know, right?  You are likely looking at your fingers and counting off…Ball State, don’t care about them.  Utah?  Care a little, but not really?  Where are the other 9?  NCAA Football runs a little deeper than the Saturday morning tailgates and games under the lights we see on TV.  Outside of the Division I Bowl teams, there are many undefeated teams left that matter to some people. A few weeks ago I was watching my Alma Mater, The University of Dubuque Spartans, getting stomped by the in t

Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year is still Going!

Posted 11/12/08 Remember just a few weeks ago when we told you about the Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award ? Well it's still going! You actually have 23 days left to get those votes in and decide who the coach of the year really is. Before you make those votes though, you should understand that coaches not only influence kids on the field but the winner of this award should also provide a major influence on them in the classroom and drive the thought of excellence into their lives.

There's still time to vote for the NCAA football Coach of the Year

by DCScrap, on 205th magazine In the past few weeks, I have told you about the Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award and I wanted to take this moment to remind you that there's still time to cast your vote. Remember, this award is a bit different than most college football awards as it takes into account the important role a college football coach plays in demanding excellence from his players not only on the field, but in the classroom as well. This award recognizes the coach in each NCAA di

What Tennessee needs is Mike DuBose

Image courtesy of LosersWithSocks.com Tennessee hasn’t had that killer instinct since 2002. It’s time to catch up with the rest of the SEC and start cheating and who better than Mike Dubose or as I like to call him Coach DuB. Look at all the wonderful things Coach DuB has already accomplished in his coaching career. It all began in 1997 when the Alabama Crimson Tide’s newest coach, Coach DuB lost to Kentucky. That was the first time Alabama had lost to the mighty KY since 1922. Coach Dub kn

How SWEET It Is! by Robert S. McElvaine Victory! This is going to take some getting used to. For me, winning has been neither "everything" nor "the only thing." It has been a very rare thing. This is the eleventh presidential election in which I have voted since I came of age in 1968. It's only the fourth in which the candidate for whom I voted won. But, for me, the 2008 victory goes FAR beyond those of 1976, 1992, and 1996. In those years, I voted for candidates that I believed to be clearly

Obama and Mississippi

The Jackson Clarion-Ledger was a notoriously hardline segregationist newspaper in the 1960s, owned by the Hederman family. Anyone who knows something about the role the Hederman press played in opposing the civil rights movement then shouldn't have any trouble getting their heads around the idea that the mainstream press today could very well be damaging the prospect for a democratic society and a peaceful foreign policy. The Hederman heirs did redeem the family name in recent years: they now pu

"Spreading the Wealth Around": Just What Ailing Economy Needs by Robert S. McElvaine The latest shift of wind direction in the campaign of John McCain finds him staking his waning hopes for winning the presidency on attacks on Barack Obama for saying, "I think when you spread the wealth around, it's good for everybody." "When politicians talk about taking your money and spreading it around, you'd better hold onto your wallet," the Republican nominee now says in his stump speech. He and fellow R

Remembering the big crash of 1929

Another "on this day in ..." post from Bob McElvaine. This time I'm only three days behind the actual date getting it up here. The Great Depression is one of Bob's specialties in history. "Black Tuesday" plus 79 Years by Robert S. McElvaine "... that quaint period, the thirties, when the huge middle class of America was matriculating in a school for the blind. Their eyes had failed them, or they had failed their eyes, and so they were having their fingers pressed forcibly down on the fiery Bra

Transformations of Christianity

I'm four days late getting this piece by Bob McElvaine posted. It's about the historical significance of Oct. 27 and how he relates to today's Christianists. And, yes, his polemical tone reflects years of experience in discussing such issues with people with the flexibility of mind of your average rock. Merry Xmas! - O Unholy Night when Christ was Reborn by Robert S. McElvaine Merry Xmas, everyone! Oh, I know that Christmas is still almost two months away. But today, October 27th, is Xmas. Chr

Abortion: A challenging year

Two recent articles in the New York Times highlight a trend that hasn’t gotten much press attention so far this year: an almost unheard of number of anti-abortion challengers running as Democrats. In this election, the Democrats have not only courted but offered strong financial support to candidates who run on anti-abortion platforms in areas long considered Republican redoubts. The first article addresses abortion only in passing, as writer Adam Nossiter examines the Senate campaign of f

Unbuckling the Bible Belt from the Legacy of Slavery by Robert S. McElvaine What is going on in the Bible Belt in this presidential year may be historic. Much media attention during the presidential primaries was paid to Mike Huckabee's success in the "Christian" states. The Reverend Governor Huckabee, we heard over and over again, was winning the "Christian" vote. "In the Bible Belt," MSNBC's Chris Matthews said of Huckabee, "he practically owns the place." Such comments obscured the fact that

Lack of Judgment at Pittsburgh by Robert S. McElvaine CLINTON, Miss. There he goes again. John McCain's instant acceptance of the highly suspicious story that one of his female campaign workers had been attacked at an ATM in Pittsburgh by a black Obama supporter who carved a backwards "B" on her face is the latest example of his judgment and style of decision-making, which would be potentially disastrous in a president. Without waiting to find out whether this cockamamie story, which police

McCain's "Hruskaism:" The Mediocre People of America Deserve Representation! by Robert S. McElvaine In 1970, when Richard Nixon nominated Court of Appeals Judge G. Harrold Carswell of Florida to the United States Supreme Court, there was an outcry that Carswell was not a jurist of the caliber required for the nation's highest tribunal. Nearly 60 percent of Carswell's decisions as a District Court Judge had been overturned. Critics charged that he was, at best, mediocre, and therefore unqualifi
