Van Halen Tour Cancelled?

Rumors are that the Van Halen tour is being canceled due to Eddie Van Halen having issues. What a shame, I really thought this tour might help Eddie, especially with his son Wolfgang playing bass. I know when I saw them back in the late eighties it was Michael Anthony …

RIP - Elvis Presley

Today, August 16th 2006 marks the 29th anniversary of Elvis Presley’s death.
As time has passed the connection to this great artist has probably been diminished among the younger musicians out there. However, there is no doubt that Elvis helped usher in a new era of music that was and …

MTV is 25 years old

Age is something that just keeps jumping up and biting me.
I remember the first day that MTV was on the air. Holy smoke. And that was 25 years ago !
It certainly isn’t the same as it was back then. MTV revolutionized music videos back then, and now they are …

Daddy Wants a Squeezebox !

I know, you probably remember it like this…
Mama’s got a squeeze box
She wears on her chest
And when Daddy comes home
He never gets no rest
credit : The Who - 1976
Well, this is the new version
Daddy wants a squeeze box
He can listen anywhere
While sitting on the deck
Or lounging in his chair
This has …

I am working 2 days this …

Having fun with Music

All of my life I have had some involvement with music. As the youngest child I was taught to play the guitar by my brother so I could “sit in” with him and my sister. My sister is one of the best piano players I know. She has a God …

Free Download: Morgan Page "The Longest Road" (Deadmau5 Remix)

Morgan Page is in the mood to celebrate and he has a very good reason to. The Deadmau5 remix of his tune "The Longest Road" received a GRAMMY nod in the Best Remixed Recording category this morning. To celebrate Morgan is giving away the nominated track away to readers of ArjanWrites.com. Totally. guilt-free. He is a long-standing fan of this blog, and I'm a long-standing fan of his music, so we'd figured it was just the right thing to do. This is a gorgeous remix with a smooth and soothing

Old-school soul, the future gold

Tony Fields' "Elegant Lady": Interview with Tony Fields: My conversation last week with Tony Fields left me bittersweet and optimistic. Fields, 50, remembers when the Battle Creek music scene was all-powerful in the Midwest, a much-needed, beloved cousin to the Chicago and Detroit music scenes. He was around when several venues hosted several groups, when regional success was a reality for many, when there was a wide variety of sounds sweet and soulful coming from the Cereal City. Fiel

Grammy Nominees Alert the Media About Their Plans and How Thrilled They Are

Wonder what your favorite Grammy nominee is up to? Well look no further than my email inbox where I have been inundated with tallies according to labels, distributors, PR companies and artists. Some nominees are still working and not just waiting around for the Feb. 8 ceremony. Among the highlights: Jennifer Hudson ( four noms) is releasing her next single, “If This Isn’t Love,” with a video premiere slated for January. Her quote: “It’s been a childhood dream of mine to release an album, so to

Loved It as a Kid - Still Love it

By this piece, my mother brought the miraculous beauty of music close to me.

From Real Detroit

Stella's Michael Ian Black + Michael Showalter The State Of Comedy Comedy is no longer comedy. Comedy is now the art of the anti-delivery, the telling of the pseudo-joke tangled within an awkward silence as we wait for the punch line. But the punch line no longer arrives with an off-tempo comedic styling, rather it doesn't arrive at all. Humor is not delivered as straightforward as it used to be, but twice as observational as ever, leaving the audience to examine themselves instead

Listening to Christmas music on Pandora right now.

We're revamping Christmas this year. Normally we don't do much Christmas related stuff in December, then fly to my parents for Christmas, where the children rip through wrapping paper like Tasmanian Devils. The trouble is, come March they can't remember a single present they received. So I'm on a quest to make Christmas more memorable. I started off the season in my usual stellar fashion by completely forgetting that Advent started last Sunday. Oops. Yeah, and I can't find our wreath, and hav

51st Grammy Nominations Announced

The Recording Academy announced nominations for the 51st Annual Grammy Awards today, and while most indie tastemakers could care less about the mainstream ceremony aside from the fashion, this year, there might be a reason for tuning in.  Surprisingly, the Academy has chosen to recognize someone other than Christina Aguilera and Usher for putting out some of the best music this year.  Among the nominees, we find Coldplay who came in at a close second to Lil Wayne, racking in 7 noms, producer

Set List: Janis Ian, England 2006

"At Seventeen," the song Celine Dion sang gently Wednesday night, keeping her powerful pipes in check, was penned by Janis Ian, a singer who has maintained a loyal following in the three decades since the song was a significant hit. Earlier this year, Ian's autobiography "Society's Child" was published by Tarcher/Penguin, but Wednesday was a remindeer of the gracious and artful nature of "At Seventeen." Ian has led quite distinct life. In the book she discusses her family being watched by the

For a show after shopping or to impress your guests, read on

The next three weeks are peak theater-going time in Chicago. And it’s possible that you’ll have guests in town. So although we bring you a list of recommended shows every Friday, we thought we’d suspend our usual deep thoughts this week and try and offer some guidance for the festive season. As I always prefer to do, I’m sticking to shows I’ve seen this year: What is the best musical in town—and can I get a ticket? I like both “Jersey Boys” (ideal for adults of a certain age) and “Wicked” (

Obama uses Zune. Will iPod fans demand apology?

Posted by Eric Benderoff at 5:25 p.m. Here’s what we know about President-elect Barack Obama and gadgets: He loves his BlackBerry. He’s a Mac, not a PC. He was seen working out with a Zune. Wait...a Zune? Not an iPod? Is it too late for a recount? Obama’s alleged choice of digital music player has sparked so much buzz in the techie blogosphere that all the incoming traffic briefly crashed the Web site of the Philadelphia paper that broke the story. “We didn’t anticipate this kind of attent

5 things Apple needs to fix in the iPhone

A couple of people have asked me to enumerate the five things which Apple needs to fix if my next phone is to be an iPhone, so, in no particular order, here they are. 1. Open up development I don't want to have to buy my applications via a single store. I don't want Apple to tell me what applications I can use, and which ones are “too dangerous” for me. I'm a grown up. I can make decisions like that for myself. People who want Apple to gaurantee the safety of their applications can continue t

Back Tack 4 and a Christmas Meme

Here's a little teaser for my Back Tack 4 partner.... And here's a little meme I saw at Elise's blog.  I need a touch of holiday spirit, so here I go.  Consider yourself tagged and leave a comment if you play along! 1. Wrapping paper or gift bags? Wrapping paper. I like to use brown kraft paper and pretty bows or baker's string. 2. Real tree or Artificial? Real trees are the most festive, but after an incident in the late 1990s or so when a ginormous tree nearly sent me to the hospital (I had

Grammy Noms, The Day After

The Recording Academy found a way to get the Jonas Brothers into the nominated action while Miley Cyrus sits on the sidelines. Maybe that'll get the kids to watch! Anyhow, not pretending to know a lick about gospel, Spanish-language or choral music, here are some thoughts on the 51st annual Grammy Awards categories. Particularly strong categories: Female pop vocal; pop collaboration with vocals; rock song; alternative music album;rap performance by a duo or a group; jazz instrumental album;
