A Few Random Things

Jump to Comments I’m not feeling very good today.  I don’t think I’m sick really, just kind of yuck.  Maybe trying to get sick?  I’m not sure.  I’m trying to take it easy tonight and get in bed early so I don’t get sick.  Hopefully I’ll feel better tomorrow.  I don’t have a real post in mind tonight, just a few things that I thought I would lump together and call a post. I’ve been feeling totally buried at work this week.  I have so much to do and I can’t seem to get it all done.  It’s not that

thanksgiving in december

the beloved: rudrani devi i rarely get too personal on ceF. i pretty much keep it to food. but i felt the need to share this with you and if at all possible to even ask you for a small favor… together, just this past week, we all watched in horror as mumbai became a war zone. we saw the death and destruction - and the people who were being terrorized. as a nation we felt angry and awful, even helpless. and we also felt thankful that we were home and that our loved ones were safe. we sat ar

Are you a regular?

It’s all about people. I think that might be my mission statement in life. I am passionate about connecting with people, whether in the community, the church, or online! One person I have connected with — and adore — is Jenni Catron. As brand new bloggers last year, we managed to find each other as we both began talking about an upcoming conference we were both going to attend. Then, at Q (some of the most transformational days I’ve ever experienced), we met face to face. Jenni and I have sl

Random Stuff and Help Wanted

December 2, 2008 at 7:23 pm | In Blogosphere, Photos | Just a few things: Tonight I am just sitting here in my pjs (yes, already), having eaten some yummy Chinese take-out (shhh, Hubby is not here tonight and it wasn’t in the budget), and planning my coming week and wow, I am already in slight panic mode about the fact that Christmas is coming so soon! I just agreed to do some alot of extra things these next few weeks and right now I am feeling well, overwhelmed. And I hate that. -Insert anno

An Open Letter to Brantley Hargrove about Boobs

Dear Mr. Hargrove, It has come to my attention through numerous emails to me and reading Pith that you are today blogging about boobs and from your blogging, it is clear that your experiences with boobs must be rather limited.  Luckily for you, I, myself, being Nashville’s (and now Whites Creek’s) resident token feminist and a boobular American have had quite a bit of experience with boobs–growing them, touching them, finding appropriate undergarments for them, developing a small fan-base for a

Bright & Early: What Recession? Edition

Good morning, Nashville. So we hear the recession is official, eh? Here on the home front, the number of Tennesseans living on food stamps has jumped almost 10% since January. Unemployment claims have also skyrocketed and are more than seven times what they were at this time last year. Meanwhile, our stores are closing and our manufacturing plants are laying folks off left and right. And we can’t forget that our credit card debt is one of the highest in the nation, second only to ALASKA–yeah,

Noel Murray Talks To Medialoper About Popless

One of the reasons that the the A.V. Club is pretty much my favorite place on all of the internets right now is that they’re constantly coming up with new angles for discussing the popular culture that they’re covering. In 2008, one of those angles was Noel Murray’s Popless column, which is just now finishing up a year-long run that made Mondays much more tolerable for loads of music fans. Popless is a deceptively simple idea: a long-time rock critic takes a year off from reviewing new mus

"Homeless and civil liberties advocates see food-sharing ordinances as one of the latest measures that "criminalize" homelessness in a misguided attempt to deal with the substantial homeless population in the downtown area."

I remember the Health Department took on the role of food-cops and started closing street feedings in the downtown area last summer. It really put a dent in the availability of food for hungry homeless folks and although it was relatively easy for those who persevered to get a permit to hand out food, many did not, choosing instead to avoid the hassle -and the potential police interaction - alltogether. This of course was almost certainly what the intent of the crackdown was anyway, and to a l

Widow’s Anniversary

Widow’s Anniversary by Minister Diane L. Harris Five years ago this morning, I hurried to the master bedroom of my first floor unit at Starlight Apartments in Nashville, Tennessee. One last teardrop rolled down my husband’s cheek. Did it mean a release of pain or an intake of joy over a glorious destination seen at the moment of death? I heard a final discharge of the breath of life. "You’re perfect now, baby. You’re perfect now." Those were my parting words. "Of course, I love you,

The Paulinator: Conference Workshop 101

One of the perks to my job is that I get to travel occasionally. I personally like the opportunity to see other cities instead of sitting at my desk, especially when I am visiting the city on someone else’s dime. While I love New York City and shed a tear almost every time I have to leave, I enjoy seeing what is out there is other cities in regards to gay life.  This past year I traveled to Houston, Denver and Nashville and in each city I was able to locate a fun gay bar and even had some hot

On The Residency Requirement (MPD)

UPDATE (12/1): A public safety academy isn't a bad idea but two questions: 1) why use proud high schools like Manassas or Hamilton? 2) What happens if a student doesn't want to go to an academy school--public safety or otherwise?UPDATE (11/25): In a hasty press conference, four more Councilmembers--Hedgepeth, Flinn, Strickland and Conrad--announced today what they consider to be compromises on the issue of MPD residency. Cool. (WREG. Fox13.)Yet, wouldn't it have been nice if more of the other Co

Leftovers: Offering Milton Bradley arbitration, Harry Spilman, more Japanese free agents, Hulk Hogan and the BCS

The Rangers must decide by tonight at 11 p.m. if they are willing to offer Milton Bradley salary arbitration in hopes of at least receiving a draft pick compensation if the free agent DH chooses to go elsewhere. Early in the offseason, it appeared a dead-cinch lock the Rangers would offer arbitration. Now, I'm not so sure. You would think that if Bradley accepted arbitration, the worst the Rangers could do is end up with a very dangerous hitter on a one-year deal for say $10 million. But the s

Andrew Peterson

Over ten years after Walk debuted to the select few who were blessed to hear it, Andrew Peterson continues to make much larger waves with his Rich Mullins-like folk charm. This season’s porch tales stand more triumphant than ever, as the Easter-themed project known as Resurrection Letters, Vol. II debuts. It’s yet another beautiful entry from Peterson, adding to an already impressive and expansive catalog. It was a pleasure to sit down with Peterson - as it always is - to discuss everything f

November 30, 2008 5 responses Grandefille says I’m gildin’ the lily….maybe?  I’ve gotten most of my stuff on my “list” checked off (me and Earl) but there’s one more thing left that I havent’ done yet.  I ain’t telling what that is.  I am capable of keeping one or two things a secret. Cherry’s already talking about getting another tattoo but not me.  It’s been a little sore today but not too bad.  I went to the Y and started to run and then was reminded that

The Long Weekend / Road Trip

Scott, Tracy, Ashlee Post-Thanksgiving Day road trip to North Georgia was filled with jolly times.  The kids and I made the haul from Nashville where we encountered deadly high speed intrigue on I-24... ok, not really.  The Appalachians provide great theater with semi-trucks, downhill grades, and runaway ramps for those who are careless with gravity.  And KD drove some of the way, so that was scary. We visited my old friend Scott Berry, his wife Tracy and daughter Ashlee in Gaine

Plagarism, Talking Points, or Formula?

An astute commenter (and Nathan Moore) points out the similarities in Steve Gill’s most recent opinion piece in the Nashville City Paper and an article entitled, “Hillary Clinton’s Fix,” by Al Kamen of The Washington Post. In light of Milwaukee Magazine’s recently published must read by an ex-conservative talk radio program director, which confirms that “Conservative talk show hosts would receive daily talking points e-mails from the Bush White House, the Republican National Committee and, du

Jason Pate Has A Slow Learning Curve

Our boy doesn’t look too bright, does he? Nashville, TN - Jason Pate, ladies and gentlemen, is an idiot of the highest order.  In 1997, he was convicted of federal charges involving distribution and possession of child pornography.  Not only was he convicted in 1997 of federal child pornography charges, he was arrested again on the same charges in Nashville, TN.  Only this time, he had a server full of images being transmitted around the world.   I mean, we are talking about a major clear

But let's face it. The mayor isn't going to create a housing trust fund in the near future.

Like most conversations Nashville has that are related to housing for the poor and those experiencing homelessness, lots of great ideas with very little forward progress..... Nashville's poor must wait for housing trust fund Gail Kerr Much of the hostility against building the next Habitat for Humanity neighborhood comes from residents who said they were tired of all the low-income housing being built in one part of town. But Habitat can only buy land that they can afford. And in many
