What is the truth?
What is the truth ?
Does it matter?
Today it seems that the truth takes a backseat to the opinion. Truth, to many (at least the MSM) is not important, the opinion is. And how popular and how well marketed the opinion, how successful the story. And if the truth does not …
'My Name is Earl': Earl and the ape man
It strikes me that Earl has destroyed many a person's life. The stuff he did to people before My Name is Earl started and he learned about karma caused a lot of pain and suffering. Tonight though, I'm pretty sure that Earl hadn't really caused the main problem he was attempting to fix. You see, there was this nice (in a weird way) guy named Raynard. Raynard was one of those crazy free thinking types of people – he did stuff like open the window in his apartment to allow a tree the choice to g

Weather Channel Environmental Unit, Forecast Earth staff, fired
Interesting find from the Washington Post: NBC Universal made the first of potentially several rounds of staffing cuts at The Weather Channel (TWC) on Wednesday, axing the entire staff of the "Forecast Earth" environmental program during the middle of NBC's "Green Week," as well as several on-camera meteorologists. The layoffs totaled about 10 percent of the workforce, and are among the first major changes made since NBC completed its purchase of the venerable weather network in September. C
Global Warming Hoax Weekly Round-Up, Dec. 5 2008
The GWHWRU returns to its regularly programmed time, my apologies for last week's unexpected hiatus and profound thanks and kudos to Skeptics Global Warming for jumping fearlessly into the breach to keep the denier hounds fed. Some of these stories and links are a week old as they were intended for the round-up that wasn't. I've only kept the best of these, the rest are full of freshness and will provide all the skeptic vitamins you need for today. One change in format, I've reduced the numbe
When We Are 'Kings'? Thursday at 10
REIGNING 'KINGS': Though NBC is lagging in the ratings this year, there is good news if you're connected with the upcoming drama Kings. It will be given the Tiffany positionon the network, Thursdays at 10 p.m., once ER goes off the air for good in mid-March. Plus, in early November, Kings creator/show-runner Michael J. Green was given a two-year contract extension, "in the premium seven-figure range," by producer Universal Media Studios. MOVIN' ON UP: CBS' The Mentalist and Fox's Fringe keep
Media layoffs spark a question: What happens to the middle class journalist?
When I look at the steadily rising total of year-end layoffs, I see the steelworkers of my youth. Growing up in Gary, Ind. during the '70s, I saw the impact as the local steel mill industry shrank from 30,000 jobs at its height to 3,000 positions in short order. Before long, a time-honored progression was forever disrupted, where kids who weren't college-bound, civil service bound or military bound could still get jobs which might lead to middle class wages. Now, I see a media industry where
Jon Hamm woos Tina Fey ... on '30 Rock'

No Tweety.
Politico writes about Chris Matthews' rumblings about running for US Senate in Pennsylvania. NBC News execs think it's a ploy to get a better deal with his contract (which would be hilarious), but it looks to be pretty serious. The garrulous host of the show "Hardball with Chris Matthews" has already picked out a home in Philadelphia to establish residency in the state, according to a Democratic operative in discussions with him about a potential candidacy. Over Thanksgiving weekend, at his vaca
'Knight Rider' rolling to a stop
Do TV networks ever utter the word "cancel"? According to E! Online's Kristin Dos Santos, NBC has decided not to order additional episodes of Knight Rider, which is the same way the network has pseudo-canceled My Own Worst Enemy and Lipstick Jungle, the stars of which maintain that the show hasn't been canceled. ABC has given Eli Stone, Pushing Daisies and Dirty Sexy Money a similar treatment. But if you read Dos Santos' post, the door is open for Knight Rider to have a second season -- but giv

More on the Ebbing of Journalism

Obligatory Chris Matthews Update (Part II).
Well That Didn't Take Long. No sooner had the (electronic) ink dried on our first post of the day did we learn that Mr. Matthews was eyeing houses in PA and thinking about giving up his pre-prime time perch on MSNBC. From The Politico this morning: "Chris Matthews is dead serious about running for the Senate in Pennsylvania — and is shopping for a house in the state and privately discussing quitting MSNBC as proof of his intense interest, according to NBC colleagues, political operatives and f
Josh Howard, Rathergate casualty, loses his CNBC job the old-fashioned way
Hey, remember Josh Howard? He was a top producer at CBS News and right in the thick of the Bush National Guard memos misadventure that wound up costing Dan Rather, Mary Mapes and everyone around them their jobs. I remember Howard because he was fired even though he seemed the only guy in that circle more interested in getting at the truth than covering up CBS's shoddy reporting. From page 173 of the Rathergate report: Later on September 10, Howard would again express concerns to West, Mapes a
Steven Pinker on Gollywaddles
For a while now, I have been obsessed with Supreme Court oral argument humor. Ever since the Court Reporter starting identifying the questioning Justices by name a few years ago, I've been keeping track of which Justices have gotten the most "(laughter)" notations in the oral argument transcripts. Justice Scalia always gets the most laughs, and the results from this term so far have provided few surprises. Without a doubt, the most interesting oral argument so far, from a humor perspective a

Report: Matthews has picked out Pa. home
The Chris Matthews saga continues, with Politico reporting today that the "Hardballer" has picked out a home in Philadelphia to establish residency in the state ahead of a possible run for Senate. The report also says Matthews is also discussing with colleagues the possibility of quiting MSNBC before his contract expires in June. FYI...here's our report from last week that noted Matthews' meetings with state Democratic leaders. From Politico... Chris Matthews is dead serious about running f

Nomura to Lay Off Up to 1,000 London Employees - Wall Street Journal Nomura Holdings Inc. said Thursday it will lay off up to 1,000 of its 4,500 staff members in London, in a bid to cut costs after purchasing Lehman Brothers' equities and investment-banking operations in Europe. A company spokesman said that the job cuts, which will be in both its front and back offices, are partly due to overlap from increased staff members from Lehman. All part of his master ploy to get under Obama's Oval Office desk.... Chris Matthews is dead serious about running for the Senate in Pennsylvania - and shopping for a house in the state and privately discussing quitting MSNBC as proof of his intense interest, according to NBC colleagues, political operatives and friends. Blacks conspicuously absent in TV series
Long before he set out for the White House, Barack Obama sought to adjust the colors on America's TV sets.Four years ago, fresh off his star-making keynote address at the Democratic National Convention, Obama challenged the television industry to live up to its responsibility as the country's "most powerful media" and accurately reflect the United States' population. "TV ought to reflect the reality of America's diversity and should do so with pride and dignity, not with stereotypes," he told
