Chase Coffman named AFCA 1st-Team All-American

COLUMBIA, Mo. – University of Missouri senior tight end Chase Coffman (Peculiar, Mo.) has been named a 1st-Team All-American by the American Football Coaches’ Association (AFCA) for his outstanding play in 2008.  Coffman has established himself as the top tight end in the country, and despite missing two games in November due to a foot injury, he has 79 catches for 872 yards and nine touchdowns this season. Coffman is the second straight Tiger tight end to be named 1st-Team All-American by th

NCAA College Football Playoff System

Here's a great solution to the BCS problem. If college basketball can do it why can't college football?

Gary Andersen is Utah State’s number one choice, SDSU hires firm to help in search

The Deseret News is reporting that negotiations have begun to hammer out details of a contract offer with the current Utah defensive coordinator.  This by no means that Andersen is gone, because the Aggies are merely putting together an offer to Andersen.  At, the University of Utah they will be looking to upgrade his current contract if Andersen is offered any job, even beyond the Utah State coaching job. Andersen has also been contacted by fellow Mountain West schools, San Diego State and New

Notre Dame Gives Charlie Another Year

So let me get this straight… you get paid millions of dollars to coach the most storied football program in America right? Yet, you lose at home to a Syracuse team with 8 loses? Then you travel to Southern California and cannot coach your team to a first down until the final play of the 3rd quarter? You’ve also had 4 years to turn this program around and have lost more games during the last two season than any head coach in school history. But today, ND Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick publicly

USC, UCLA show NCAA what class is

It is great to hear about the cooperation being exhibited this week between USC football coach Pete Carroll and UCLA’s Rick Neuheisel, and how they gave the big middle finger to the NCAA. For years, both USC and UCLA wore their dark home jerseys in their annual end-of-season rivalry game. But the big, mean NCAA decided years ago that any visiting team in college football MUST wear white, or that team forfeits a timeout in each half. To return to that tradition, Carroll announced on Monday that

Perfectly Normal Fan Views 389 Mediocre Football Games In A Row

Fandom is a funny thing. For me, it comes and it goes, almost like the seasons — I get really into baseball in the spring and summer and leave it almost entirely during the winter; football used to be my favorite, and now is my least; and so on — no one’s fandom is exactly the same. You may be insane for the Bulls one day, and suddenly, decisively, wake up the next day with no love in your heart. Hey, it’s your life. I don’t judge. Dewey Corn is of a different breed. His fandom of North Caroli

Layla Kiffin Has Them On Their Knees in Knoxville

There has been much ado about Lane Kiffin’s hiring in Tennessee. Some people think he’ll be a good coach (me) and others (Clay Travis) are more skeptical about the youngster handling the botched reigns of Philip Fulmer’s wagon. And Steve Spurrier just thinks he’s a cheater. But almost more attention has been paid to Mr. Kiffin’s reasonably attractive wife, Layla. So much so that some psycho fan has created the Web site, IWouldDoLaylaKiffin.com. I wish I was kidding. They say behind every g

DOJ and College Football

Barack Obama says we need a college football playoff. Rep Neil Abercrombie wants to get the DOJ involved: Seizing on Obama’s public support of a new system, Abercrombie wrote a letter to the president-elect last month urging him to have the Department of Justice investigate the issue. “With the prestige of the Presidency and vigorous pursuit by the Department of Justice in support of fairness and equity, we are certain the BCS will be persuaded to resolve the issues to the benefit of the na

Patriots' Belichick opens up (not really)

Seattle-area reporters had a chance to talk with New England head coach Bill Belichick this morning. Known for sometimes grumpy nature and intense attention to detail, Belichick said he’s not always that way. “(I’m) Pretty loose,” quipped Belichick, when asked if he’s remains the stiff head football coach when he leaves the team’s practice facility. Belichick then went on to give some examples of his exploits away from the football field, including hanging around with aging rockers Bon Jovi,

App v. App: Sportacular and SportsTap

Ahh, sports. The thrill of victory, the agony of defeat. If you are old enough, you probably remember the “agony of defeat” guy - painful on more than one level (for him, and for you if you are old enough to know what I’m talking about). I love me some sports, and thankfully there are some great sports apps for the iPhone. Two of my favorites are freebies - Sportacular and SportsTap. Which one has the edge? Who comes out on top as being more competitive and “sportier?”  Who hits the shot at t

Marlon Brown, Grandma Really Like Kiffin

Harding Academy WR Marlon Brown Make no mistake, the recruitment of Harding Academy’s Marlon Brown goes beyond his football ability. The 6-5, 210-pound wide receiver is a solid basketball player too, and the schools pursuing him know he’d like to play both sports at the collegiate level. This past Monday night, Lane Kiffin, the Tennessee Volunteers new head football coach, paid a visit to Brown before his Harding Academy team took on Lausanne. Everyone supporting the Florida Gators, Georgi

New Coach At Tennessee

With the announcement Monday that Lane Kiffin will be Tennessee’s head football coach next season, much of the speculation that had been swirling around now seems laughable. The speculation now turns to how well Kiffin will do. With Kiffin there is some good news and some bad news. First Kiffin is not from the “Tennessee family”. That may be good or bad depending on who you’re talking to. Kiffin is young but he has experience. He found success as assistant at USC but his experience in the NFL w

When Will The 3D Madness End?

I’m particularly fascinated by the sudden wave of sports being broadcast in 3D, namely because HD just became the go-to format for television. It’s sort of like going from the Model T to the Cadillac to the hybrid car in like, 10 years. (Yes, I’m aware that analogy is flawless.) Technology, it is ever changing. We had NBA playoff matches in 3D; We have this Thursday’s NFL game getting the treatment. And now? The BCS Championship game. CEO David Hill dropped the info during the 3D Entertainmen

We Need More Phil

Earlier this week, I laid out my reasons of why Lane Kiffin is a bad hire for the University of Tennessee football program. However, I never addressed the underlying issue of terminating the employment of Phil Fulmer to begin with. While I must admit riding the fence when the news first came out that this would be Coach Fulmer’s last season, as time passed, it became more and more evident this firing is a colossal mistake. ...more...

Report, Report: Charlie Weis Lives To See Another Season

According to a bunch of unanimous people speaking to other people that write for publications, Charlie Weis is not going to get canned at Notre Dame. There’s supposedly even a presser today to announce such a fact. To be honest, this isn’t worst move. The Fighting Irish clearly improved from last year’s abysmal 3-9 mark. Sure, 6-6 isn’t going to cut it at Notre Dame, but three more wins from a year before in a sport where not many games are played is a marked improvement. Jimmy Clausen will b

2009 Defensive Studs (Draft Eligible)

DE 1. Brian Orakpo (Sr./ Texas) -He’s a physical freak, has the strength to overpower lineman and the speed to go around them. May be the best defensive player in the country. He also fits the mold of a great outside pass rusher in a 3-4 system. 2. Michael Johnson (Sr./ Georgia Tech) -At 6’7 260 pounds he has the unique combination of size and speed. He may be the best pass rusher of the bunch. 3. George Selvie (Jr./ South Florida) -Selvie is a natural pass rusher with a non-stop motor. Al
