Cory Lidle Plane Crash
I could not believe this happened. How can a plane, any size, fly around the New York City skyline? Especially after 9/11.
I thought for sure that the initial reports were wrong, but it actually happened. The plane Cory Lidle (New York Yankees pitcher) was flying was a Cirrus SR20, a …
New Mash Up: "Just D.A.N.C.E." by Lady GaGa vs Justice vs David Bowie
Not only did DJ Paul V put together a remix of Brit Brit and Marilyn Manson, he also produced a snazzy mash up of Lady GaGa's "Just Dance," Justice's "D.A.N.C.E." and David Bowie's "Rebel, Rebel." Universal Records was so impressed by this fine piece of work that they commissioned the mash up. It was pressed on a very limited amount of discs and spread around as a pseudo bootleg release to New York City tastemakers to give GaGa's rise to fame a firm boost. Listen to "Just D.A.N.C.E." by Lad
Don’t Look Now But the U.S. Government Is Bankrupt
Last October the "National Debt Clock" in New York City ran out of digits to record the ever expanding figure that represents what the U.S. government (and therefore, all Americans) owe. And we done "owe it to ourselves," folks. We owe it to our creditors, a majority of whom are foreigners and foreign governments. As a short-term fix, that digital dollar sign ($) on the billboard-style clock near Times Square was switched to a figure -- the "1" in $10 trillion. When this happened three month

Cry for Paterson Administration to Pull the Plug on Ratner's Failing Plan Brooklyn, NY -- Developer Forest City Ratner (CEO Bruce Ratner pictured ) has halted all work on the proposed Atlantic Yards project site in Prospect Heights , Brooklyn. Specifically the developer has abruptly stopped work on building a new rail yard that would sit under a portion of development. For a show after shopping or to impress your guests, read on
The next three weeks are peak theater-going time in Chicago. And it’s possible that you’ll have guests in town. So although we bring you a list of recommended shows every Friday, we thought we’d suspend our usual deep thoughts this week and try and offer some guidance for the festive season. As I always prefer to do, I’m sticking to shows I’ve seen this year: What is the best musical in town—and can I get a ticket? I like both “Jersey Boys” (ideal for adults of a certain age) and “Wicked” (
Comedians in the 2009 Sundance Film Festival
The Sundance Film Festival has announced its slate of films for the 2009 celebration of cinema in Park City, Utah, and more than a few feature and/or star stand-up comedians during the Jan. 15-25 run in the ski hills. There's one bonafide film about comedy screening: Why We Laugh: Black Comedians on Black Comedy / USA (Director: Robert Townsend)—Using rare archival clips along with provocative interviews with many of today's leading comedians and social critics, Why We Laugh celebrates the incr
Dale Jr. is popular, again
For the sixth consecutive year, Dale Earnhardt Jr. has been voted NASCAR's Most Popular Driver. The award, the only end-of-the-year honor voted on by the fans, has been given annually since 1956. Earnhardt's six wins moved him past Bobby Allison on the all-time list. Only Richard Petty (nine) and Bill Elliot (16) have won more. Earnhardt was presented the award Thursday in New York City, where he showed up with a full beard. Read more here.
Park Christmas tree
Maree Park writes: Spencer and Kelly, This is a photo of our tree. As you can see we are fans of both tinsel and baubles. In 2004 we travelled to New York City to spend Christmas with our friends Margaret Weber and Pat Weiss. What a wonderful place to be at Christmas/New Year. Our Tree not only has a lot of special family ornaments, but now has ornaments from Radio City, Times Square and the Metropolitan Opera not too mention a Yellow Cab. Wishing all at 612 a Wonderful Christmas and a Suc
a few zines
A couple of days before I took an extended Thanksgiving holiday, a fellow zinester dropped off the full run of Infiltration at my apartment. All twenty-five issues of the staple and fold zine by Ninjalicious, the intrepid urban explorer who passed away in 2005. Each one about places where you are not supposed to go. To say I was giddy would be an understatement. The feeling was matched a day later when a comic book by Jimenez Lai hit my mailbox. There is something magic about these little pu

Snow foolin': Where is the real Bedford Falls?
It's time for a Weather Guy to weigh in on this USA TODAY story from last week, about which New York State town was the inspiration for Bedford Falls in the classic Christmas movie It's a Wonderful Life (left). I've always felt that the snow itself was a major character in the movie -- both the piles of big, heavy, wet snow on the ground, as well as the persistent flakes that fall from the sky. In the article, Seneca Falls, N.Y., claims to be Bedford Falls. Located southeast of Rochester, N.Y.

Candidates for education secretary: Where's LAUSD's Brewer?
The folks at the Thomas Fordham Institute are handicapping President-elect Barack Obama's pick for secretary of Education. If they're right, it looks like Obama might be looking for a big-city schools chief, someone like Arne Duncan of Chicago or Joel Klein of New York. Notice who's missing from that list? That's right -- of the nation's Big Three school superintendents, only David L. Brewer of Los Angeles is NOT considered to be in the running for the Cabinet post. In some ways, Brewer migh
Sundance 2009 : New York Director Has His [Third] Day
Nelson George, the CAA repped filmmaker of Sundance 2006's Life Support, is making the trek from his Brooklyn home to Park City, Utah for the third time in five years. And he's not going just for the glitz, the bribe-the-doorguy parties, or Cisero's famous French Onion Soup. As frigid December made an appearance, Sundance announced its 2009 competition slate, which [to George's relish] included Good Hair, a documentary he recently produced with Chris Rock. The film was a unusual undertaki

Hillary Clinton is Throwing a Party
ABC's Eloise Harper reports: Hillary Clinton's office has just released an announcement that she and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, are having a party - and its not to celebrate her nomination as Secretary of State. Its an event to relieve her debt. Hillary Clinton has been for months trying to relieve the millions of dollars in debt that her campaign amassed over the months of the 17 month primary campaign she ran. At this point Clinton's debt stands at $7.5 million dollars i

Free Plaxico Burress
Cato’s David Koppel has an interesting piece in today’s WSJ suggesting New York Giants star Plaxico Burress’s arrest for carrying a handgun into a New York nightclub violates his 2nd Amendment right to keep and bear arms. For those of you who somehow missed this story because you're focused only on college football, Burress caused himself a world of trouble by accidentally shooting himself in the leg at the club over the weekend. His behavior was bad, no doubt. But as Kopel points out, you hav
How useful is body fat % as a barometer of health?
I just had a body composition test, which found that I’m at 7.8% body fat. (I’m 5’11.5” tall and weigh 172 pounds.) I was pleased with the results, as I was down from 8.6% body fat since my last test in July 2008, but it got me thinking: Just how useful is body fat percentage as a barometer of overall health? - Mark, Pa. Great question, Mark. Obviously your body fat is low indicating good physical shape. I ran this by two sports nutritionists I respect on our ING New York City Marathon Sports n
Staten Island Firefighter Wins $3.75M in Anti-Gay Abuse Settlement
The city of Annandale in New York City's Staten Island borough awarded $3.75 million to Robert Walsh, a former firefighter, as settlement for an assault with a metal chair by fellow firefighter Michael Silvestri after what Walsh described as two years of ongoing anti-gay harassment: "Walsh, 45, formerly of Annadale, sued the city and former firefighter Michael Silvestri for $100 million over 'permanent injuries' he says he suffered when Silvestri smashed a metal chair in the side of Walsh's
