Cory Lidle Plane Crash

I could not believe this happened. How can a plane, any size, fly around the New York City skyline? Especially after 9/11.
I thought for sure that the initial reports were wrong, but it actually happened. The plane Cory Lidle (New York Yankees pitcher) was flying was a Cirrus SR20, a …

Yankees Rumors: Burnett, Sabathia, Pettitte

The latest on the Yankees front... Ken Davidoff says the Yankees and Blue Jays were willing to give A.J. Burnett a fifth year vesting option. The Braves seem likely to sign Burnett if they will guarantee that fifth year as has been reported. Braves officials are confident. Meanwhile the Red Sox have moved on to Derek Lowe. Davidoff says Yankees officials are confident they're the only serious suitor for C.C. Sabathia, as there's still a $40MM gap between their offer and Milwaukee's. Davidof

Sheehan: Yanks’ arb decisions a big mistake

Joe Sheehan dissents. I quote at length: The choice for the club is pretty simple. If the player is valuable enough to warrant a one-year contract, offer him arbitration. You will get draft-pick compensation if he signs elsewhere, and if he does not, you will have a good player signed to a one-year deal… The Yankees made a mistake by not offering arbitration to either [Bobby Abreu or Andy Pettitte], the biggest mistakes any team made in this round of decisions. For a team with the Yankees’ re

Joba to appear at Sacred Heart University

Here’s the press release. Joba and Jon Lester will be appearing together and headlining the university’s student lecture event, where they will take part in a “Hot Stove Conversation” on Tuesday, January 27th at 8pm. They’re also going to be doing a meet-and-greet after the event. Tickets went on sale today, and are $20 a head (discounted rates for kids and students). The school is located in Fairfield, CT, so it’s only a quick little 50 mile drive from the city. I’m sure it’ll be worth it. (h/

Just watch: The Yankees will get shut out at free agency window

One of the best scenes in the "The Sting" comes when Lonnegan, the mark, gets to the window but is shut out from placing a bet. The horse race unfolds and, doggone it, Lonnegan (played by Robert Shaw on the right) watches red-faced as his would-be horse wins. Too bad for him. A version of the "shutout" might be unfolding for the New York Yankees — baseball's Doyle Lonnegan — in free agency. The New York Daily News is reporting that the Atlanta Braves are willing to give A.J. Burnett a fifth year

The 25 Best Rickey Henderson Stories

Regardless of your thoughts about Rickey Henderson, there are two indisputable facts: 1) He is a sure fire first ballot Hall of Famer and 2) He could make your scratch your head with some of his quotes. The site Fan IQ has come up with the The Definitive Rickey Henderson: The 25 Best Stories of “Rickey Being Rickey.” Yankees fans probably remember when Rickey was upset with his “socks” and Mets fans remember him and his poker partner, Bobby Bonilla. Fans of both teams can’t say they didn’t se

ESPN: Red Sox make Pedroia highest paid player

Well, not really, but someone forgot a period. The reigning AL MVP has signed a six-year, $40.5 million contract extension. The Red Sox are buying out two years of Dustin Pedroia’s free agency at market rate. ESPN just wishes Boston were going a bit overboard. (Hat tip to long-time reader Patrick for mailing this one in.) Baseball Free Agent Projections

Next week, the baseball brass will meet in Las Vegas — the ideal venue for serious business — to have their winter meetings.  Buster Olney and Ken Rosenthal will duel breathlessly for time-stamps.  Bud Selig will deflect all criticism with the buxom bottom line.  At some point between the craps tables and the loose women, the free agent picture will likely be sorted.  Here are some projections. CC Sabathia (Angels of Anaheim): Behind most trends strides a smooth black man. MLB free agency will

He led the county with a .548 batting avg as a sophomore, and was then named team captain and MVP as a senior. Jackson named 27th best prospect in baseball

The fine folks at milb.com have started to release their list of the top 50 prospects in the game. As the title says, Austin Jackson came in at number 27, right alongside some big names like Tommy Hanson, Lars Anderson and Eric Hosmer. Bye Bye Houston Comets

It’s better to burn out ’cause rust never sleeps.  The king is gone but she’s not forgotten.  -Neil Young Public Service Announcement:  Ok, here we go!  There they go.  There go the Houston Comets.  There but for the grace of God, goes the Houston Comets.  There but for the grace of God, goes the best professional women’s basketball team ever assembled. There were victory parades.  There were swarms of screaming fans.  There was ride after ride on the fire truck. Four consecutive rides on t

Why the Yankees and Jeter should pray for a pulled hamstring

Rob Neyer throws cold water all over the notion of Derek Jeter one day moving to second base, and I'm right behind him in the fire brigade. Jeter has a good arm and no range. That's exactly the opposite of your typical second baseman profile, isn't it? But what do you do with the Captain? My view is that moving him to any other position apart from maybe third base is destined to fail (see, Jones, Chipper), and the Yankees already have a third baseman. And no, you don't want to do the switc

Thunder Voted Minor League Team of the Year

(PR) The Trenton Thunder, the Double-A affiliate of the New York Yankees, have been named the Minor League Team of the Year in the “This Year in Minor League Baseball Awards”. All voting was conducted by the fans through MiLB.com The Thunder garnered 67 percent of the vote in the Team of the Year category, which was the largest percentage of any winner. They also had the largest margin of victory, beating Augusta (Low-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants), which captured 20.2 percent of the

Nike Zoom Lebron VI - Hardwood Classics PE

The Nike Zoom Lebron VI has officially debuted and now it’s time to see all the different colorways that Nike can come up with to support their marquee athlete, Lebron James. To date we’ve seen a New York Yankees colorway inspired by Lebron’s performance last season in the Garden, a Big Apple colorway that Lebron wore this year at Madison Square Garden, a United We Rise colorway that Lebron wore when he helped Team USA bring home the Gold this Summer at the Beijing Olympics, a Home PE that is

Going Over to Rome

Catholics have seen the light! They're starting to vote Conservative. Something for the masterminds behind the Grand Coalition to consider, another pillar of Liberal dominance falling away. Catholic voters back parties that are community-minded, says Andrew Grenville, Angus Reid’s chief research officer. And in 2006, for the first time, they shifted their support to the Tories. This year’s results confirm the trend: outside Quebec, 49 per cent of Catholics who attend church weekly voted Conse

Report: Braves preparing to offer Burnett 5 yrs

With the Javy Vazquez trade set to be official any moment, the Braves aren’t wasting any time moving on another top pitcher. Mark Feinsand, citing “sources,” is reporting that they’re preparing to offer AJ Burnett a five year contract, something that Burnett and his agent are looking for. Reports have indicated that the Yanks will not go to five years for Burnett, but they could still offer a higher annual salary to keep him interested. If this report is true, it would seem that Frank Wren &

Hughes's Autumn Rebound

Hughes’s Autumn Rebound By Justin Sablich When you read about the projected Yankees rotation for 2009, you see only two guaranteed starters: Chien-Ming Wang and Joba Chamberlain. What happened to the untouchable Phil Hughes, the pitcher who the Yankees wouldn’t part with last off-season, not even for Johan Santana? Phil Hughes pitched poorly for the Yankees in April of 2008 before fracturing his rib. (G. Paul Burnett/The New York Times) Hughes was expected to be one of the key contributor

Braden Looper’s worth to the St. Louis Cardinals

WEST COUNTY — The St. Louis Cardinals decision not to offer Braden Looper arbitration by this week’s deadline can be measured in the innings they have to prove they can fill, the dollars they may have saved, and the years of security he may gain. But don’t forget to count the prospect the Cardinals won’t get. As a Type B free agent, Looper offered the Cardinals the opportunity to assure a supplemental (i.e., sandwich) round pick in the 2009 draft if Looper signed with another major-league tea

Relief Pitcher: Hoffman wants to Meet Mets

Free-agent RHP Trevor Hoffman has had talks with the Mets about meeting at the Winter Meeting or in New York, ‘or perhaps both,’ according to the New York Post, who cites the player’s agent. …unless he is open to being a set-up man, ‘with experience as a closer,’ i hope Omar Minaya’s interest is limited to simply asking for an autograph… The 41-year-old Hoffman had 3.77 ERA with 30 saves last season for the Padres. …signing hoffman to a short-term deal to be the team’s closer makes zero sens
