Brett Favre Retires

After 17 years Brett Favre retires, no really. I hate to say it, but the first thing that comes to my mind is that I am old. I clearly remember when Brett Favre came into the NFL as an Atlanta Falcon. And think about that, after one year in Atlanta …

Eddie Robinson

Ex-Grambling coach Eddie Robinson died at the age of 88 in Monroe, LA.
He’s noted for sending more than 200 players to NFL.

Football questions this week.

1.) Can the Colts offense get past the Bears defense?
2.) Can the Bears offense get past themselves?
3.) Is Norv Turner the next Dallas Cowboys Head Coach?
4.) Did Jerry Jones really consider Wade Phillips as a possible candidate?

Still gotta love those Saints

Even though they were no match for the Chicago Bears today, ya gotta still love those Saints. A year after Katrina the New Orleans Saints were definitely a rare bright spot in the Big Easy.
And you know Cowboy Maloney has to be breathing a little easier today!
Now let’s see what …

Romo leads the Cowboys home

Well that didn’t last long. With one play Tony Romo showed the Dallas Cowboys where the exit was at Qwest Stadium.
Hard to be real upset with him, he was the main reason the Cowboys made it to the playoffs, and I know I would not want to go through the …

Dallas Cowboys clinch Playoff berth !

Thanks to Tony Romo and Marion Barber III I have a reason to watch NFL football for the rest of the year (while I wait for Nascar to start up again!). Although I will admit that I would keep watching the New Orleans Saints too !
Being a Drew Bledsoe …

Matt Leinart finally signed

The first-round pick of the Arizona Cardinals signed a six-year contract.Out of 255 players taken in this years NFL Draft, Leinhart was the last to agree to a contract. Financial terms were not disclosed, but you can be assured it was way too much. ESPN reported that the contract was …

Clinton Portis dislocates shoulder

In the first preseason game of the year for the Washington Redskins, Clinton Portis dislocated his shoulder attempting a tackle on a Mark Brunell pass that had been intercepted. An MRI has already confirmed the injury and now it will be a waiting game to see how bad the injury …

Cowboys sign Williams

The Dallas Cowboys signed Roy Williams to an extension, and that is good news. But, if you read between the lines you will see the bad news. America’s Team is in some real trouble on the marketing (players) front.
“He probably is the second-most visible player we’ve got on this team …

Reggie Bush signs with Saints

Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush signed a six-year contract Saturday with the New Orleans Saints. The Saints announced this morning that he may not practice today, but should be in practice tomorrow, Tuesday August 1st. The Saints are holding their Training Camp at Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi.

Ready for some Football

It’s that time again. NFL Training Camps are up and running, draft picks are holding out. Old timers are trying to find that new team to help ignite their career one more time. The Top 10 from Draft day are certainly under the microscope, that is, if they showed up to …

NFL - Race an issue

I really do not understand this. Why do people have to be racially motivated to stir up trouble. In an article on ESPN by Michael Smith, he says…
“And so the NFL’s diversity record remains six African-American coaches out of 32. A disappointing loss and an opportunity lost, for sure. But …

Aikman, White among finalists for Pro Football Hall

NFL - Aikman, White among finalists for Pro Football Hall:
“CANTON, Ohio — Former Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman and the late Reggie White were among the 15 finalists Wednesday for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.”
I personally can not see how Aikman can miss, but, I am a little biased, having …

Back to Work

Finally back to work today. I have been off since last Wednseday, and I was ready to come back to work. Vacation and Holidays always sound great, but, after a few days I am always ready to get back to my regular schedule. I know, I must be sick or …

Professional Sports

As a kid growing up I was a major NFL Football fan. My beloved Dallas Cowboys were as close to my heart as anything else in life. Over the years I never missed a game. In 1997 when I moved to Mississippi I purchased Direct TV for the sole purpose …

More from Beebe on postseason football

Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe did take questions recently from the media following Oklahoma's win over Texas Tech. A lot's been made over the Big 12's tiebreaker system, but here's some more from Beebe: On the possibility of a playoff: "My main point is regardless of where you end up at the end, we have to go through a very, very, very careful and considerate process if we're going to change the postseason. Because as I've stated a number of times, it's my judgement - We have the best regular

Rosters, coaches set for Under Armour game

ESPN has announced that former NFL coaches Marv Levy and Mike White will be the head coaches for the 2009 Under Armour All-America high school football game on Jan.4 in Orlando. The list of players in the game is an impressive one. Of the 82 players participating, 67 are from the ESPNU 150 rankings. One notable matchup will be at quarterback, where Matt Barkley (USC) of Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, Calif., will play for the White team. He will face off against Houston Cypress Ridge's Rus

Breakfast Crumbs: Thursday

Notes and thoughts compiled at the breakfast table ... * Bowling season is upon us, and perhaps all we need to know about how much the college football bowl system has changed can be picked up from the first paragraph of this Yahoo! Sports story on Clemson being invited to the Gator Bowl: "In four days, Clemson went from wondering if it would reach the postseason to playing in the Gator Bowl on New Year’s Day." From possibly not making a bowl to making a New Year's Day bowl? Clip that sentenc

Packers Sign PSU Punter

A bit of non-Eagles news for the overlap fans: Packers want steady leg from new punter Kapinos The Green Bay Packers are hoping Jeremy Kapinos isn’t fighting the same mental demons that doomed recently released punter Derrick Frost this season.  They signed Kapinos over three other punters they worked out Tuesday and Wednesday, and he’ll be their punter Sunday against the Houston Texans... At 6-foot-1 and 230 pounds, Kapinos is the biggest of the four punters the Packers worked out this wee

Ricky Williams explains the inexplicable

Ricky Williams is being, shall we say, shy with the South Florida media of late for reasons I don't understand because they haven't been explained to me. But Williams on Wednesday did spend some time on a conference call with the Toronto and Buffalo media because he apparently likes them. [They're probably smarter than the South Florida guys because, among other things, they spell center as centre.] And during his interview with the smarter reporters from the great white north, Williams said

The Minority Report

Dec 1, 2008 By Andrew Adam Newman Source: BrandWeek Black athletes, musicians and actors figure more prominently in ad campaigns than ever, but the chances that African Americans actually created those ads are pretty slim. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics data from January 2008, the advertising field -- defined as advertising and PR agencies, as well as media, direct mail and other operations exclusively devoted to creating and delivering ads -- is just 5 percent African American, 3 per

Vikings Williams Boys Win

Minnesota Vikings defensive tackles Pat Williams and Kevin Williams have won a big victory in their efforts to avoid being suspended by the National Football League. KSTP-TV in Minneapolis is reporting that Judge Gary Larson has issued a temporary restraining order against the NFL. That means, for now, that Williams and Williams should be allowed to play Sunday. The Williamses said they were heading straight from the courthouse to the Vikings’ practice facility. However, this is far from ove

Looking at the right numbers

I love the numbers. We know that. No secret there. But more importantly, I love the right numbers. You can study the wrong numbers for as long as you like, but you will miss stuff you can find looking at the right numbers.Case in point: Peter Schiff vs. everybody else when it came to the economy. So what does that have to do with my other blog, Unified Football Theory? Well, I'm doing a lot better than 50-50 when picking point spreads, and I'm doing it by looking at the numbers I compile. My

Who wants to reopen old wounds? Super Bowl XIII coming up on NFL Network

This arrived from NFL Network today. In anticipation of Dallas and Pittsburgh renewing their historic rivalry this Sunday, when Tony Romo and the Cowboys visit Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers, NFL Network will air Super Bowl XIII as a part of NFL Classic Games Friday, December 5 at 8 p.m. In the first Super Bowl re-match ever, Super Bowl XIII matched Super Bowl X opponents Pittsburgh and Dallas at the Orange Bowl on January 21, 1979. Quarterback Terry Bradshaw threw a record four touchd

Harbaugh May Be Another Entertaining Rookie Coach

Jim Zorn has established himself here in D.C. not only as a talented young football coach, but also as a seemingly endless source of entertaining stories and quirky turns of phrase. Today’s post-practice press conference was relatively mild from that perspective — an “ab-so-LOOT-ley,” the observation that moving Sunday’s game to prime time means “We’re a team that’s still worth watching. At least we didn’t get bumped,” and that was about it. He also seems to have been fairly laid back in hi

Black college football player named a Rhode

I was reading a piece a few weeks ago in USA Today about colleges steering athletes in majors that allowed them to get easier grades and keep them eligible. Florida State University safety Myron Rolle wasn't among them. Rolle, who finished his degree in 2 1/2 years, was recently named a Rhodes Scholar, one of the most prestigious academic titles in the world. I talked with Myron Monday on the Tom Joyner Morning Show about the honor, as well as his decision to take it or play his final season

Meet Plax’s Replacement: Domenik Hixon

Born in Germany! Played college football at Akron and caught passes from marginal NFL QB Charlie Frye! Was running back a kickoff in 2007 and had a helmet-to-helmet collision with Kevin Everett. Everett was paralyzed. As a special teams player, Hixon seems like a budding talent - he hasn’t had enough touches (three kick returns this season, averaging 60 yards per) to warrant Josh Cribbs hype; but on punts, he’s 9th in the league in average, which is still a far cry from Reggie Bush and Ros

Mmmm…Pie

The emails started on Wednesday. Kearns wanted to go to Atlantic City. Alceste did too, but he was having stupid Thanksgiving with his family and wouldn’t be back in the Northeast till Sunday. Mary was in too. I was on the fence. Ok, the fence to Atlantic City. So, we all agreed we’d go on Sunday. I would have to amuse myself till then. Piro was cooking her usual thanksgiving feast, a couple of the regulars would be absent from this year’s table, so she extended her invite to “my crew,” (her te

NFL Football Picks & Predictions for Week 14

Starting off this week early, in Thursday night NFL game I’m taking the Oakland Raiders +9.5 against San Diego.  The Raiders have been awful, this is true, but the Chargers aren’t winning me over with their 4-8 record either.  There’s definitely something missing in San Diego, but they can’t seem to figure out what it is.  Chargers still win 17-10, but the Raiders cover the spread. Time for the Colts to spread their wings and fly a little bit this week.  They went without scoring an offensive
