Brett Favre Retires

After 17 years Brett Favre retires, no really. I hate to say it, but the first thing that comes to my mind is that I am old. I clearly remember when Brett Favre came into the NFL as an Atlanta Falcon. And think about that, after one year in Atlanta …

Aikman, White among finalists for Pro Football Hall

NFL - Aikman, White among finalists for Pro Football Hall:
“CANTON, Ohio — Former Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman and the late Reggie White were among the 15 finalists Wednesday for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.”
I personally can not see how Aikman can miss, but, I am a little biased, having …

Battle of the Beltway

There’s a lot of hype around this week’s Ravens-Redskins game and it seems everyone is trying to get a piece of the action. It started when the NFL announced last week it was moving the game — originally scheduled at 1 p.m. in Baltimore — to its Sunday Night Football slot for national coverage on NBC. Presumably a Battle of the Beltway matchup that pits two teams with playoff hopes (the Ravens are 8-4, Skins are 7-5) will be a much better draw for listeners — and therefore ratings — than the o

2008 NFL Review - Week 13

Jump to Comments (Philadelphia, Pa) — Week 13 of the 2008 NFL season is behind us and despite the weather is starting to become cold in most NFL cities, there is plenty of action heating up as we move toward the playoffs.  In another wacky week of play, the NFL did not disappoint delivering statement wins, upsets, and a stuffed turkey or two or three in this week’s case The week started early with three NFL Thanksgiving games that were symbolic of the holiday as there was three turkey stuffings.

Week 14 NFL Preview

The Drama Of December Begins; Four Weeks To Go To See Who Goes B-r-r-r-r, it’s getting cold out there. Everyplace, of course, but in the NFL, where things are starting to sizzle. It’s December, which means that the final four weeks of the season with all its suspense and surprises are about to begin. “A couple of weeks ago, all the games became must-wins,” says running back SAMMY MORRIS of the New England Patriots. “Now there’s even more emphasis on every game.” Nothing like four games to g

Passing History

Cocky QB Benny Friedman was an innovator BENNY FRIEDMAN would have been 100 years old when he was posthumously inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2005. Why did it take so long for the man who legitimized the forward pass in pro football to make it to Canton? In Passing Game: Benny Friedman and the Transformation of Football, first-time author (and former litigator) Murray Greenberg offers possible explanations: Friedman’s egotism, his public disagreement with the NFL players’ asso

Coaching Legends in Atlantic City (1957)

This edition of eBay Watch takes a look at a special pint glass. Like I’ve found with many of these memorabilia auctions the description doesn’t quite make sense and certainly doesn’t do the item justice: Up for bid we are listing 9 vintage football glasses all in mint condition. This one is Herbert ” Fritz ” Crisler from the University of Michigan 1957. The top of the glass reads Atlantic City National Football Clinic. The back lists the Clinic staff members. It measures 5-3/4″ tall. Great

Young Bucs

Monte Kiffin has coached eight different Tampa Bay Buccaneers to 33 Pro Bowl appearances. Middle linebacker Barrett Ruud may soon be added to the list. “He’s having a Pro Bowl year,” said Kiffin, the long-time defensive coordinator. “Now I’m not going to put him at the top of all these tremendous middle linebackers, because this is only his second year as a starter. But I know when a player is having a Pro Bowl year. “He’s putting it on tape, and if [voters] don’t see it,” the u

Raiders assured of 6th straight losing season

ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP)—For nearly all of Al Davis’ tenure with his beloved Raiders, the franchise has been a near-perfect reflection of its prominent leader. That was true when the rebellious owner of football’s renegade franchise built a team that dominated the opposition on the way to three Super Bowl titles in the 1970s and ’80s and the best record in American professional sports. Unfortunately for the Raiders, that has also been the case more recently when an owner described by his cri

The Life-and-Death Cost of Gun Control

By John R. Lott, Jr. Author/Senior Research Scholar, University of Maryland Banning guns is in the news. India practically bans guns, but that didn’t stop the horrific Muslim terrorist attacks this last week. A firefighter rescues guests of The Taj Hotel in Mumbai, India. A football player concerned for his safety violates New York City’s tough gun control regulations by carrying a concealed handgun, and people call for everything from banning NFL players from carrying guns to demanding t

Kind words about Saban; Les Miles sucks & more

Adversaries and slackers hate him. He’s called a jerk or worse, but there are players and coaches who have nice things to say about Alabama’s Nick Saban. The St. Petersburg Times provides these insights into the Alabama coach. First, a former assistant coach: Saban’s public persona isn’t often warm and cuddly, but those who know him well say that perception is way off the mark. “It definitely is,” said Jimbo Fisher, now the FSU offensive coordinator who once worked for Saban. “He’s just a pe

Tuesday, December 2: Dr. Z’s Redskins Love

According to Peter King’s Monday Morning Quarterback column yesterday, Paul “Dr. Z” Zimmerman, arguably the dean of SI’s football writers, suffered two strokes last week and is recovering in the hospital. Zimmerman has been writing about football for what seems like forever, long enough that when King picks out “four passages from not so long ago” to highlight some of Zimmerman’s best writing, the definition of “not so long ago,” relative to Zimmerman’s career as a whole, stretches back twen

Niners don’t see late surge as auditions for 2009

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) - Although two victories in three games qualify as a big surge for the San Francisco 49ers, Shaun Hill and Mike Singletary know they shouldn’t get comfortable in their new jobs any time soon. The quarterback and his interim coach realize they’re both far from certain to return to the 49ers (4-8) next season, even after revitalizing a team that dropped seven of its first nine games this fall during its sixth consecutive non-winning season. Every Down Back

Are the Steelers the team to beat in the AFC? Even if they aren’t, they’ve got the best homefield advantage. They boast the best defense in the league, but the offense has underperformed. Still, they have a solid lead in their division, and they’re working on a first-round bye. They’re the Pittsburgh Steelers. They are first in all four major defensive categories — points, total yards, passing yards and rushing yards — but the offense, without running back Willie Parker for much of the seaso
