Numbers
The television show Numbers is one of my favorites. I guess that really shows my geek side. Although they push the envelope a little, numbers and math are definetly a major part of life.
I have been reflecting on numbers for this year, and how my age is starting to show.
31 - Years since I lost the vision in my right eye. I guess since it was at an early age is the reason it does not seem as critical as other things, although I am reminded everytime I open my eyes.
14 - Years since I did chemotherapy. And it amazes [...]
Bike Sharing Is Long Overdue in Richmond
Sure, the first 300 or so are going to be stolen and sold for scrap. That's what happens to most investments before you begin to see a return. But for a city as active and densely built as Richmond (specifically downtown Richmond), it's almost criminal that there aren't bike lanes incorporated into every major street; every bus doesn't have a bike carrier; there aren't bike racks outside of major retail and cultural sites; and there isn't a broad-based bike sharing program in place. And to thin

My crazy suburban adventure
Yesterday I went outside the Loop. It happens sometimes! M was in town briefly, and so after work I went out to the west side of town to meet her and MWK for dinner (they were at their offices out there, she was staying out there, so it was logical). Now, I am very fortunate in that my life keeps me mostly within a small area in the central city. I work downtown, I live in the Heights, Teddy’s doggie day care is in Midtown, so my longest car trip is twenty minutes in traffic, I forget how much
Enough Numbers
-It is cold here … 9 degrees above zero. Holy cow - these are winter temperatures and winter doesn’t start until a month from today! -Good morning everyone and welcome to our blog … We are Steve (35) and Warren (62) and we live in beautiful cold frigid northern Minnesota. Soon to be the land of 10,000 snow flakes per square inch. -Out in the back yard as I said a moment ago 9 degrees with very light snow coming down. -Today’s northland weather forecast for our little corner of the wor
Want to improve your child's educational chances? Then talk to your baby....
Baby talk is becoming more serious. Worrying numbers of youngsters can’t string a sentence together when they start school and their delayed speech can affect them for life. But who is to blame for this nation of reluctant talkers? Fewer and fewer children are speaking confidently, and that means additional problems in understanding, communication, and, as they get older, their ability to learn. Recent research suggested that 90 per cent of nursery workers are concerned that speech difficultie
Banned Plates
Banned Plates Filed under: General News, Political, Transport — Longrider @ 12:31 pm Oh, for crying out loud! The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) keeps a list of plates that it has not approved because of words formed by their sequence of numbers and letters, an MP has found. Have we really sunk this low? A spokesman for the DVLA told The Sun: “Every number is checked to ensure it does not offend”. It would appear so. Tags: rampant+stupidity, dvla, nothing+bett
Your weekend horoscope: It’s time to mix it up, Cancer
Here is your astrological forecast for the weekend of Nov. 21-Nov. 23 courtesy of your resident scopetress Jen Bem. Aries 03.21-04.19 This weekend you’ll be stuck inside doing work around the house. Taurus 04.20-05.20 Accept a friend’s invitation to stay over this weekend and enjoy life on her side of the street. Whether you’re a suburbanite or a city dweller, th

UN Raises DR Congo Troop Numbers To 20,000
From AFP: KIWANJA, DR Congo (AFP) — The UN Security Council approved Thursday an extra 3,000 peacekeeping troops to help end conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, where fresh fighting erupted earlier in the day. Its decision in New York came hours after new clashes between rebels and pro-government Mai-Mai militia outside Kiwanja -- scene of fierce fighting earlier this month in which at least 50 civilians were killed. 8% growth will challenge China's social structure
Usually I am fiscally conservative, but right now is no time to adhere to an economic “code of conduct.” To be sure, deficit spending can lead to problems down the road, but at what cost does an economy stave off expansionary spending? Congress is dragging its feet - how much output must we give up to get funding for new infrastructure and for those who need it – the unemployed. The U.S. welfare infrastructure is not well-equipped to handle 8%-8.5% unemployment, which is why Congress is expecte
Fate of Lakotahs Highlights America's Failed Native American Policies
Fate of Lakotahs Highlights America's Failed Native American Policies - by Stephen Lendman On November 6, South Dakota's governor Michael Rounds declared a state of emergency as heavy snow blanketed the state and threatened all parts of it - including Native American reservations. They, however, were excluded from his declaration. They'll get no badly needed help, and it's an all too familiar story for our nation's original inhabitants. They've been abused and slaughtered for over 500 years.

In Defense of Ethanol
Two days ago, I criticized the corn ethanol program for increasing food prices (I also dislike it because it subsidizes one crop with a heavy environmental footprint to produce fuel that's probably doesn't even reduce overall carbon emissions.) In response to the points in that post and a conversation we had last weekend, Ben Ho, an assistant professor at Cornell and former economist (2006-2007) at the Council of Economic Advisers, wrote this post.Ethanol is an immensely complicated issue that
Call in Gay — December 10th (International Human Rights Day)
There’s a movement underway to “call in gay” on December 10th and do no work, spend no money in order to draw attention to the economic impact the LGBT Community has in this country — all in effort to further the cause of marriage equality. We love a good protest, so we’ll take part in this too, every way we can, but with one caveat: we refuse to allow Democrats to delude themselves into creating a myth about Proposition 8 in California, and we will not let ANYONE claim it was those evil relig
Playing the Waiting Game
My oldest daughter is now three and a half. A few months ago, she started giving us grief about going to bed and all the activities that go with it (brushing teeth, etc). We were almost pulling our hair out in frustration over the nightly conflict. The only thing that seemed to work was threatening to take away her book-reading privileges for the night - that would almost always get her moving. This caused me personal heartache, however; not only do I think reading at bedtime should be an i
TechCrunch Euro Tour 08: Yes, even Belgium has startups
A couple of weeks ago I headed over to Belgium as part of my ongoing TechCrunch Euro Tour, to get a taste of the local web/mobile entrepreneur community (BTW, come to the London and Helsinki events soon). I hooked-up with another TechCrunch writer, Robin Wauters, who had kindly arranged a TechCrunch Belgium meetup in Gent. Gent is quickly becoming one of the main places to startup in that country, as it’s a short drive from Brussels (which has the main airport and the excellent Eurostar), but G
