Numbers

The television show Numbers is one of my favorites. I guess that really shows my geek side. Although they push the envelope a little, numbers and math are definetly a major part of life.
I have been reflecting on numbers for this year, and how my age is starting to show.

Knut turns 2, and it might be his last birthday at Berlin Zoo

Knut, the Berlin Zoo's superstar polar bear (and cash cow), marks his second birthday tomorrow. It might be his last in the German capital. Now fully grown and weighing nearly 450 pounds, Knut is outgrowing his enclosure and approaching the age when certain animal urges need fulfilling. He lives in a small part of the grotto, which also houses his parents (Lars and Tosca) and two older female bears. Zookeepers say they can’t afford to build new living quarters, and it's time to find him a mat

TVGeek: 21 Jump Street

One of the great things about Tivo is that when the basic cable channels rerun your childhood favorites, you get to watch them all over again. Sometimes you discover things you never knew were there. I recently rediscovered 21 JUMP STREET running early every morning. Catching an episode here and there made me remember what it was like to be a tween in the 1980s, back when big hair and legwarmers were the height of fashion and you really needed six Swatches to get to class on time. Oh, everyone

Global Warming Hoax Weekly Round-Up, Dec. 5 2008

The GWHWRU returns to its regularly programmed time, my apologies for last week's unexpected hiatus and profound thanks and kudos to Skeptics Global Warming for jumping fearlessly into the breach to keep the denier hounds fed. Some of these stories and links are a week old as they were intended for the round-up that wasn't. I've only kept the best of these, the rest are full of freshness and will provide all the skeptic vitamins you need for today. One change in format, I've reduced the numbe

Naming the Source of Human Dignity: A Fourth Response

One student remarked that so many students are responding to the blog today because ANYTHING is better than studying for finals.  Here is another student's take on the human dignity question: "The real problem is, indeed, a modern philosophical shift, but not necessarily the one people are talking about. Modern philosophy begins with the outlying case: can there be human dignity for the human person that doesn't act, look, or smell like a person? Classical philosophers began with the norm, and

Since When Does Agi Have An "Ever Present Smile"?

Matt Cronin previews 2009 for the ladies: Jelena Jankovic: Let's begin with the positives: Jankovic became the first Serbian in history to end the year at No. 1 and really went hard after the top ranking following Wimbledon. Even though she frequently complains about nagging injuries, she shows up week after week and punches the time clock, mostly with a positive attitude. She is by no means a standout No. 1, but she's a terrific defensive player who can capably mix in high-octane offense. Jan

Pope St. Pius X's Encyclical Against Modernism, Pascendi

Pascendi Dominici Gregis ENCYCLICAL OF POPE PIUS X, SEPTEMBER 8, 1907 VENERABLE BRETHREN, HEALTH AND THE APOSTOLIC BLESSING: 1. One of the primary obligations assigned by Christ to the office divinely committed to Us of feeding the Lord's flock is that of guarding with the greatest vigilance the deposit of the faith delivered to the saints, rejecting the profane novelties of words and the gainsaying of knowledge falsely so called. There has never been a time when this watchfulness of the

The CW gets whupped by...MyNetworkTV?

In a TV season full of creative misfires and ratings declines, the single bright exception is The CW, right? 90210's a hit and the number of Gossip Girl viewers is finally starting to match the volume of the buzz, right? And as a result, The CW is no longer teetering on the brink of oblivion, right? Um, not exactly. Last week, MyNetworkTV -- all but forgotten since it junked its all-telenovela format for movies, reality shows and trash sports -- zoomed past The CW in the Nielsen ratings for th

The report

It has taken a few days, but the reality and shock of this report has settled in. Click here for the full story. It is 40 pages long. It is basically who Keith and I are wrapped up in a paper nutshell. Unfortunately with a lot of miss truths. It is obvious to me now that Social Worker needs to work on one crucial piece of being a social worker, listening. By reading what she has written it appears that she heard the worst part of a story, situation or experience and focused only on that small

World's oldest living animal discovered after he is pictured in 1900 photograph

This picture of a Boer war prisoner and guard was snapped on the remote island of St. Helena in 1900 - the tortoise nibbling grass at their feet was about 70 at the time and is still alive Richard Savill and Richard Alleyne at the Telegraph: But the pictures helps to mark the reptile as the oldest animal on the planet. Jonathan, the tortoise, is believed to be 176-years-old and was about 70 at the time the black and white picture was taken. He was photographed during the Boer War around 1

Carol Alt Playboy Nude

Carol Alt bares all for the December issue of Playboy. Carol at the ripe old age of 48 is looking amazing.  She puts her look down to eating raw.  "The reason I showed my body is because my body would not have been like this if it hadn’t been for the fact that I had gone raw."  "I want people to know that after 40, it’s not the end of your life. Life goes on. You can feel good, look good, be beautiful and sexy and that’s all an attitude which comes from health." Carol graces the front cover w

What Will Arnold Schwarzenegger's Next Role Be?

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – With Arnold Schwarzenegger's governorship entering its final years and his ability to attract the spotlight intact, one question is arising more frequently: What will Arnold do? Will he share the stage with Al Gore as a global environmental crusader, promote green technology for a Barack Obama administration, run for the U.S. Senate? Or might he pursue political reform on a broader scale, as he has hinted in appearances with New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who shar

Breakfast Crumbs: Thursday

Notes and thoughts compiled at the breakfast table ... * Bowling season is upon us, and perhaps all we need to know about how much the college football bowl system has changed can be picked up from the first paragraph of this Yahoo! Sports story on Clemson being invited to the Gator Bowl: "In four days, Clemson went from wondering if it would reach the postseason to playing in the Gator Bowl on New Year’s Day." From possibly not making a bowl to making a New Year's Day bowl? Clip that sentenc

This year's flurry of fund-raisers, cocktail receptions and other opportunities to get your hob nobbed takes place next weekend (12-13 December). I've seen a lot of discussion this year on Christmas Trees, real or fake. Ironically, I've asked myself that question serveral times in the last few years and I think I may have to consider it more closely in the future depending on what my asthma does. But lets start at the beginning... because my parents were quirky about their yearly holiday symbol. I come by it honestly! My earliest memories of trees when we lived in remote Alaska, was my dad coming through the door with whatever lonesom

Advent 4

Whats behind door 4? Tis story time! And as usual, it looks much better on the official BBC site so why not head on over there and have a look!NUMBER 1, GALLOWS GATE ROADWritten by Rupert Laight. Illustrations by Brian Williamson. The first thing the Doctor heard when he woke was the sound of something tapping at a window. He sat up in bed, ran a hand through his tangled hair and stared around him. Winter Love by Andrew Grey

The starting point of this short novel, 65 pages, is the same of the previous long novel by Andrew Grey, Children of Bacchus: Blayne is a young man with some family issues who would like to take a break from life. He has fond memory of a piece of land, heirloom of his family; so when his father asks him to drive up in the snow to evict the tenant of the land, Blayne is not at all happy. He has always hoped to receive the land in legacy after his father's death, and instead now his father wants t

Manchester United 5 Blackburn Rovers 3

A comfortable victory over Blackburn n the Carling Cup last night has a misleading scoreline to give United a place in the semi finals. Manchester United were always in control, even with a much changed team from the Sunday game. The game was notable for a change in form from Carlos Tevez who scored three or four goals - one could be declared an own goal - and a goal from Nani. But how did Blackburn managed to score three goals at Old Trafford, just a few weeks after Hull City also managed
