Super Bowl, Winter Olympics and NASCAR

Although I did not have a favorite in the Super Bowl, I guess I was rooting for Seattle. However, I am happy to see the Steelers get their victory and Jerome Bettis be able to retire at the top. Pretty ironic seeing how I am a diehard Cowboy fan. Oh …

Kwan made the Olympic Team ?

I guess this seems out of character for me, but Figure Skating is something I am pretty involved in. My oldest daughter Danielle is a Figure Skater, and at the Novice level she too has Olympic dreams. It is a tough sport to work your way to the top.

Canada - A Jugoslavia of the North? Constitutional Crisis will now get worse

Milosevic - stirred up the Serbs appealing to all the latent fears and hatred. Once a level had been reached, the country of Yugoslavia dissolved into a bitter civil war and can now never be put back together again. The decision of the Governor General to allow the Prime Minister to prorogue Parliament, gives Mr Harper the opportunity to appeal to the fears and hatreds in Canada for his own ends. We will now have an 8 week period where the battle lines will be set up. Here is how it could l

What's the fastest a human can run?

While races times of horses and dogs haven't budged for decades, a new statistical analysis by Stanford University researcher Mark Denny concludes that humans cab still run faster. "We haven't gotten to the limits yet, but we're not far off," he said. Could Bolt have reached maximum human speed at the 100-meter race if he had focused on the finish line instead of fans? "We'll never know," Denny said. Based on years of collected data, he graphed trends for the three species, then predicted top

What Will Arnold Schwarzenegger's Next Role Be?

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – With Arnold Schwarzenegger's governorship entering its final years and his ability to attract the spotlight intact, one question is arising more frequently: What will Arnold do? Will he share the stage with Al Gore as a global environmental crusader, promote green technology for a Barack Obama administration, run for the U.S. Senate? Or might he pursue political reform on a broader scale, as he has hinted in appearances with New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who shar

Telegraph.co.uk: Olympics minister under fire for criticising junk food sponsors of 2012 London Games

Critics said Miss Jowell had to be careful about slighting major private backers given that there is still a £50million funding shortfall for British athletes in the build up to the 2012 Games. The Olympics minister said companies like Coca-Cola, Cadbury and McDonald's "need to be made aware" of increasing concern about healthy eating and childhood obesity as sponsors of the £9.3billion Games. Speaking at a local government conference in London, Miss Jowell said that their support "was very i

What Happened in 1984?

Confident, self assured, well travelled . . no longer a kid . . .and not too big for a hug . . .the kid turns 24 Yessssss! We've been pretty busy for the past 3 days, catching up, running through photos, anecdotes, travelogues, birthday and Christmas shopping and entertaining friends. She is

In Memoriam: Thomas A. Fogarty

He was the man you'd want at your dinner party -- or the reporter next to you as you sat through another long night of boring debate in the Iowa Senate.  He was the consummate story teller -- in print and in person. Tom's vivid accounts of the grand and not-so-grand moments in life made the day brighter with the shared laughter that followed every punchline. Tom Fogarty -- a friend, colleague, and mentor -- died Tuesday night.  Since then I've been "talking" (via email) with a number of folks

Mental Toughness & Swimming

This morning at workout our coach told us all to visualize our races before hand.  To get us motivated for the race and to erase away any doubt.  Normally I do this minutes before I get on the block.  I find a song in my head and try to focus on the beat and how it relates to my swimming.  I try to keep positive during the race even when I'm doing 65 flip turns in a 1650.  Swimming a 1650 or 1500 allows ones mind to start to let doubt sink in.  I've swam a few races when around the 1,000 meter

COULD THE MUMBAI OPERATION BE REPLICATED? HERE’S HOW, SAY THE EXPERTS

Sixty hours in Mumbai have begun to change the calculus of global terrorism. New reports suggest that both Indian and American intelligence agencies had foreseen the threat to Mumbai (formerly Bombay). Yet the manner of the attack – with 10 heavily armed, highly trained fighters clinically fanning out across the city – meant that no “police force anywhere would have been prepared to counter this type of operation,” says Bruce Hoffman, a terrorism analyst at Georgetown University in Washington. A

Sports Illustrated “Sportsman of the Year” - Michael Phelps

We all tuned in to watch and, if you were like me, you were swimming every stroke with him and cheering him on from your comfy chairs as we were sweating each swim along with his excited Mom. The Beijing Olympics were fantastic and Phelps made them super fantastic. Congratulations and good luck to this terrific young man and his even more terrific Mom. Michael Phelps Becomes First Swimmer to Win Sports Illustrated’s Sportsman of the Year NEW YORK — Michael Phelps has achieved another unpr

Shea Weber eyes possible spot on Canada

Shea Weber figures the road to Vancouver runs through Nashville. While there isn’t an NHL defenceman with better individual stats so far this season, Weber thinks the best thing he can do to impress the decision-makers for Canada’s 2010 Olympic team is help the Predators have success this season. That’s certainly his plan. ”(The Olympics) are definitely a goal but it’s something I can’t think about,” Weber said this week. “I’ve got to take care of the business here in Nashville and just cont

Michael Phelps Named Sportsman Of The Year By Sports Illustrated

Who better to receive Sports Illustrated’s Sportsman Of The Year award than Michael Phelps who won an amazing eight gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. “Michael Phelps as the 2008 Sportsman of the Year was the easiest choice I have made,” Group editor Terry McDonell said. “Look at what he did in Beijing last summer. I was there. I saw him race after race, win again and again - we all saw that. And then to know him now — it is so obvious that he changed not only swimming, but also the

A Tall Order

So the Sixers finally pull off a win and then they have this to come home to this. The Celtics may be the champs, they may have beaten the Sixers like a rented mule less than a week ago, but this Lakers team is the most talented in the league. They have not one, but two options on the low blocks, a point who can distribute, defend and knock down the three, two defensive stoppers coming off the bench, two Euro shooters who can light it up from deep and, I almost forgot, Kobe Bryant. On top of al

Danica Patrick Most-Searched Athlete On Internet

If you thought America was getting used to looking at Danica Patrick, well, you’re wrong. It turns out that not only does the good ol’ U.S.A. find searching for Danica a completely insatiable appetite, it’s also just as captivated with the most popular league in the sport she calls her own. (Hey, what’s with the suit? Does she drive cars or something?) At least those are the findings from AOL’s annual report of year-end hot searches for 2008. In fact, the report claims that Danica-mania ma

Great Moments in Olympic Diving: Tian Liang

While the 2008 Summer Olympics may be just a distant memory forged by an almost pathological media obsession with speedos and hunky gymnasts - Archery? Puh-leaze! - one can't help recall some of the great moments from Olympics past that have earned their rightful place in our collective imaginations: Michael Phelps. Marc Spitz. Jesse Owens. The list of accomplished athletes seems endless. And no less significant, too, are those athletes that, althought they've moved on to less noteworthy fame,
