Isolationism as reverse psychology

Sometimes, thoughts just pop in my head and I wonder if they have any possible real value?
With all the problems in the world community today and the inability of fixing anything by anyone, I wonder what would happen if all of a sudden the United States just pulled out of …

20 Questions

According to this article  one in five young adults has a personality disorder. That’s not news to me. I’ve seen how they dress and listened to enough of their music to know for certain that figure is correct. To be fair, that figure was probably not a lot smaller in 1980 when I finished high school. We just had much better music. Young adults are faced with a complex world, and wrong choices about school, work, partners, etc. can have real serious consequences. My father, who ran a bank trust

What is the difference between SPIRIT and SOUL? December 4, 2008

image by axinia There seem to be a confusion about the terms “Spirit” and “Soul” and I am happy to share with you my observations. Wikipedia says: The English word “spirit” comes from the Latin “spiritus” (breath). The term is commonly used to refer to a supernatural being which is transcendent and therefore metaphysical in nature. For many people, however, spirit, like soul, is a natural part of a being, and is identified with mind, or consciousness, or the brain. In many religions and parts of

Thank you, Chamber Board Members, for the lovely silk scarf, dinner certificate, and fabulous plaque commemorating four years of chamber leadership.   You give me much more credit than I deserve.  It was fun, educational, and fulfilled lots of dreams.  You taught me to stay steadfast to my vision and philosophy.  George Deshler is very proud of me.   I look forward to our stepping up to the next level of excellence in 2009-2010...caring for our business and community members and showing our a

Where Is Presidential Outrage At The Torture Of Jews In the Mumbai Massacres?

Both President Bush and president-elect Obama exhibit an appalling lack of moral conscience and emotional empathy in their failure to express outrage at the torture of Jewish victims in the Mumbai massacres. How are we to explain their moral failure to witness evil? Is it the realist foreign policy philosophy to which both now adhere? In Obama's case, has his explicit disavowal of moral idealism as expressed by neocons deadened his soul to real torture? But then, Obama and his team express ou

[LHBOTS] Mills' Alterity, Pain, and Suffering in Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel Reviewed

RBL has posted a review of Mary E. Mills' LHBOTS volume Alterity, Pain, and Suffering in Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel, Vol. 479 written by Hallvard Hagelia of Ansgar College and Theological Seminary in Kristiansand, Norway. A quick excerpt... Is this kind of postmodern Bible reading really valid? Of course! But I will still argue that the basis for all biblical theology should be detailed exegesis, a close and expository reading of the texts. On this basis, a more subtle application could

Naming the Source of Human Dignity: A Fourth Response

One student remarked that so many students are responding to the blog today because ANYTHING is better than studying for finals.  Here is another student's take on the human dignity question: "The real problem is, indeed, a modern philosophical shift, but not necessarily the one people are talking about. Modern philosophy begins with the outlying case: can there be human dignity for the human person that doesn't act, look, or smell like a person? Classical philosophers began with the norm, and

Flickr Updates Mobile Site, Adds Video Playback for iPhones

Flickr is rolling out a new and improved version of its mobile website, the company announced Thursday. In addition to some enhancements to the mobile site's user interface, the update adds video playback capability -- something previously missing from the Flickr mobile experience. Video playback will only work on the iPhone and iPod Touch right now, but Flickr plans to add support for other smart mobile devices in the coming weeks and months. A strong mobile experience in a must for the pho

Ware May Need Favre

It's a shame the Cowboys don't play the Jets this month. That way linebacker DeMarcus Ware would have a real shot at Michael Strahan's NFL-record of 22.5 sacks that was Brett Favre aided. Ware currently has 15 sacks, which leads the league. He's going to need a monster last month to catch Strahan, or a quarterback who has no problem taking a dive to make sure he gets the mark. But Ware has been thinking about the record. "You've got to keep it out of your mind," Ware said. "It's all really just

Conspiracy Archive Thinkers Discuss the Jesuits-Run-It-All Fantasy

Terry Melanson and the Collins brothers discuss with Vyzygoth here and here the ahistorical and absurd theory of the Jesuits-run-the-world propagandists.  Also relevant is Terry Melaonson's schoalry article debunking this view found here.

Doorey on Wal-Mart Saskatchewan Labor Decision

David Doorey writes that the Saskatchewan Labour Board is considering a case in which the UFCW argued that Wal-mart's closure of a unionized store in Quebec amounts to intimidation under the Saskatchewan legislation, because it effects how Saskatchewan Walmart workers feel about the risk of joining the union. I think the UFCW may have difficulty winning on the merits, but the argument survived a preliminary objection. Here's part of David's entry from his blog: Presumably, if behavior of an

Pope St. Pius X's Encyclical Against Modernism, Pascendi

Pascendi Dominici Gregis ENCYCLICAL OF POPE PIUS X, SEPTEMBER 8, 1907 VENERABLE BRETHREN, HEALTH AND THE APOSTOLIC BLESSING: 1. One of the primary obligations assigned by Christ to the office divinely committed to Us of feeding the Lord's flock is that of guarding with the greatest vigilance the deposit of the faith delivered to the saints, rejecting the profane novelties of words and the gainsaying of knowledge falsely so called. There has never been a time when this watchfulness of the

Our own Marin Alsop makes good

She is the Principal Conductor of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra as well as its music director.  Before going to Baltimore, Ms. Alsop was Conductor of our own Colorado Symphony.  She was named the 2008 Conductor of the Year by Musical America, an industry publication. She's certainly a ground-breaker.  The only other female conductor that even comes to mind is Antonia Brico, who, incidentally, also had a Denver connection.  She retired in Denver, and lived here until her death in 1987. I'

Academia.edu Announced

Dear all,   I recently finished my Ph.D on the philosophy of perception from Oxford. With a team of people from Stanford and Cambridge, I've just launched a website, www.academia.edu , which does two things:   - It shows academics around the world structured in a 'tree' format, displayed according to their departmental and institutional affiliations. - It enables academics to see news on the latest research in their area - the latest people, papers and talks.   We are hoping that Academi

Naming the Source of Dignity: A Response

A student posed a question here and Fr. Araujo responded here.  This is a response from Richmond law student John O'Herron: "Your most recent post and the question it poses are fascinating.  I am a law student at UR so my thoughts on this may be of little more value than your other students.  I did take a good deal of philosophy in college though (Christendom) so I am somewhat familiar with the issue presented.   The question obviously has massive implications for life issues: abortion, stem-ce

human made.

i am participating in the FERIA URBANA next saturday DECEMBER 13th at PIZZAIOLO. i was doing a little bit of research on the venue and read this beautiful story about the philosophy of the restaurant. you should also read the story about charlie here...very inspiring! i think it's the perfect spot to showcase a small collection of local artists for some handmade holiday cheer and some locally grown, organic, human made pizza. it doesn't get ANY better than that. for many of you, i realiz

What Will Arnold Schwarzenegger's Next Role Be?

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – With Arnold Schwarzenegger's governorship entering its final years and his ability to attract the spotlight intact, one question is arising more frequently: What will Arnold do? Will he share the stage with Al Gore as a global environmental crusader, promote green technology for a Barack Obama administration, run for the U.S. Senate? Or might he pursue political reform on a broader scale, as he has hinted in appearances with New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who shar

'A perversion of the Abrahamic faiths'

I am deeply touched by Ruth Gledhill's report on Chief Rabbi Jonathan Sacks words at a memorial for the Jews who died in Mumbai. Ruth Gledhill - Times Online - WBLG: Chief Rabbi: 'A perversion of the Abrahamic faiths'. The Chief Rabbi Sir Jonathan Sacks has warned that hate is contagious and called for the love of God to be invoked to defeat those behind the Mumbai attacks. Speaking ... shortly before a memorial service in north London hosted by the United Synagogue and Chabad-Lubavitch UK
