New Postal Rates - Again
This is getting to be an annual event. Almost exactly a year to the day of the last increase, the USPS will be raising the postal rates once again. Of course I guess this should be expected.
Years ago, I would buy a book of stamps just for my monthly payments. Now, I can pay everything except a couple local bills online, which saves me time and money.
One thing I thought was interesting on the official USPS page announcing the postal rates increase, they use the term “Pricing Highlights”, like there is something about an increase that is supposed to impress [...]

Editors’ Biggest Peeves
Here's another fruit from last weekend's SCBWI New England ENCORE! session in Rhode Island. Sarah Shumway, now with Katherine Tegen Books/HarperCollins, had polled her Dutton Children's Books colleagues this spring about what sort of authors irritated them most.In this purely non-scientific survey, Shumway reported, those editors' biggest peeves were: Authors who leave typos in their query letters. Authors who leave typos in their manuscripts. Authors who pester editors unreasonably about manusc

A New Era Begins
It is November already? How crazy is that! Time is just flying past, and things aren't calming down here anytime soon, I feel as though I'm working in my sleep just to get through everything. These are just a few things I've been up to the past few weeks - Trying desperately to bring chaos into order.

97 New Ways to Save Money (from DR Readers)
One year ago I wrote an article about 51 painless money saving tips. It was a simple enough article with a bunch of ideas on how to save some money without making huge sacrifices. The response was stupendous. There have been countless comments to the article, and the article has been viewed more than 65,000 times. But the best part of the article has been the money saving tips submitted by readers. Through comments and e-mail, readers have offered dozens of ways to save some money. So I thought
Helpful Mailing Instructions for Troop Mail
If you are going to prepare care packages yourself to send to our troops here are some instructions that you'll want to know. All care packages must be taken to a Post Office to be mailed for security reasons. Packages go through the regular U.S. mail system then through the military mail system. Paying for Priority Mail will NOT rush the package through the military mail system. It will expedite it through the U.S. portion though and every little bit helps.Clearly and neatly write or type the mi
150 Ways to Save Money and Get More Out of Christmas
Christmas is likely the one single holiday that cuts into your bank account the most. Forget birthdays and weddings, hosting a Christmas party for family and friends, buying gifts, and entertaining can put you on a diet for months after and your budget in severe need of counseling. You can still have a Merry Christmas without the obscene spending though. It just needs a little bit of creativity, and perhaps just as much time as you would normally spend planning. You don’t even have to worr
Dear Charter Communications, Part 2
I know I’ve written to you before, but there’s something ELSE we need to talk about. A couple of weeks ago, you sent this to us in the mail: your most recent piece of marketing, where you advertise phone, cable and internet for $69.97. Wow! That’s really a great deal. I’d love to take you up on it! Oh, wait. I can’t? Because I’m already a customer? And I have been a loyal customer for oh, say, 9 years now? And you only give good deals like this to new customers to lure them in? I get i
Jieuxs, Kneegrows, Homows — I Take It All Back!
November 12, 2008 in New World Order | Tags: Affirmative Action, Gays, Homos, Humor, Jews, Negroes, Political Correctness, Sarcasm Actual, unretouched snapshot of me taking center stage at the recently-opened FEMA reeducation camp — where I declared my new-found liberal persona while surrounded by a loving, richly-paid staff of US government employees and rabbis. Can you feel the love? OK, I’ve decided to throw in the towel, people. Look, we all know how oppressed and downtrodden all the mi
USPS,FedEx and UPS Scheme to Survive Shipping Slump
USPS,FedEx and UPS Scheme to Survive Shipping Slump With more business closing, mail and package delivery services are taking different routes to cut costs. The U.S. Postal Service may make history for the wrong reason, as it contemplates cutting as many as 40,000 workers (out of 685,000). According to the Washington Post, USPS mail volume dropped 11% t in fiscal 2008, which resulted in the service spending $2.3 billion more than it took in. USPS may also offer early retirement packages to
CHRISTMAS PACKAGES, HOLIDAY PACKAGES, MAILING DATES, GUIDELINES FOR THE MILITARY TROOPS
Pulling this and updating from my 2007 post... (which was from 2006... and 2005... -- it's a classic!!) my site meter is filled with people looking for ideas of things to send the troops. TIME'S AWASTIN' -- SO GET GOING!! First, I suggest that you make this a family project -- nothing better than to explain the sacrifices of the military to your children. It is also a GREAT group project -- Homeowners Associations, church groups, community groups, poker groups, reading and investment clubs...
Holiday Gift Tags
needing a new computer and so on and so forth, I was aiming to decorate the outside of the house for free. Actually, almost free, since we already bought a beautiful wreath from our friends whose son is in Cub Scouts. And, since I hate to be rushed during the holiday season (and the dirt in our planters freezes once the weather is too cold), I got to decorating the house right after Halloween (as in Nov. 1st). To add the festive flair to the outside of the house, I simply pruned the evergreen b

Swap Etiquette
I want to write about Swaps and I want this to be upbeat and positive. I have been in some bad ones, (haven't we all) and don't want to dwell on the negative. I have also been in some amazing swaps where I was the receiver of a box , that once opened, made me feel overwhelmed with love and affection. What's the difference? *Bad ones are usually late, if they arrive at all and seem to be put together without thought. Random bits of detritus from around the house or maybe even items
