What I heard today about flying

Getting on an airplane…
Is the safest way to fly
Wow, I had never thought about it like that, lol. I know that is not what the person meant to say, but, it is a provocative thought just the same.

Every Nation Winter Conference Notes & Quotes (part 1)

The 2008 Every Nation Winter Conference. Three days in Jacksonville, Florida with 180 American pastors, church planters and campus missionaries. Hosted by Southpoint Community Church. Great time of worship and fellowship. Our first day featured a panel discussion about how to balance family and ministry. Here are some notes and quotes from day 1 on marriage, family and ministry. Brett Fuller - The goal is not to become a better pastor, husband or father. The goal is to become a be

Blogging's Spiritual and Possibly Even Financial Rewards, in Contrast to Deteriorating Conventional Journalism

Despite all the horrendous stories of newspaper layoffs, near bankruptcies, and even "bailout plans for journalists," there's some silver lining in the media world: blogging is blooming into a profitable financial and publishing enterprise for at least a few. The Huffington Post just landed $25 million of new funding, and now has a valuation of $100 million. And TPM Media, founded by Talking Points Memo blogger Josh Marshall, which has about a dozen employees, is hoping to expand in 2009 throug

Reality Check: Clean Coal doesn't exist

That is the message of thisisreality.org. I just saw their ad spot on Commedy Central  (and now I'm watching them discussing blogging, yay!) Their website has some great quotes about clean coal from the EPA and various other governmental organizations and is working to counter the coal industries claims about clean coal. So remember, next time someone talks about the benefits of clean coal (which are about equal to those of cold fusion) just ask them how many clean coal plants exist. Scroll

Quote of the day

Before reading this quote, please keep in mind that it was made in April of 2000. With what is going on now it is a shame that the Big Three did not listen to their own quotes more: "We understand the triple bottom lines of sustainability must all be addressed for us to be successful." -- William Clay Ford, Chairman of The Ford Motor Co.

Cruise ship stranded off coast of Antarctica

An Argentine cruise ship carrying 122 people is stranded off the coast of Antarctica, news agencies report. Bloomberg News quotes an Argentinian naval officer who says the Ushuaia ran aground. Reuters says the passenger ship "started to take on water and leak fuel after it ran aground." Officials tell AP that the vessel isn't in any immediate danger of sinking.

Transitioning From Surrender To Victory

The Times repackages Obama's campaign promises on Iraq: Campaign Promises on Ending the War in Iraq Now Muted by Reality By THOM SHANKER WASHINGTON — On the campaign trail, Senator Barack Obama offered a pledge that electrified and motivated his liberal base, vowing to “end the war” in Iraq. But as he moves closer to the White House, President-elect Obama is making clearer than ever that tens of thousands of American troops will be left behind in Iraq, even if he can make good on his cam

D-Day Asks, The Environmental Coalition Offers

Wow, when I wrote this brief yesterday about the dangers of clean coal, I honestly had no idea that an entire campaign was being readied by Al Gore's Alliance for Climate Protection, the Sierra Club, The League of Conservation Voters, the NRDC and several other enviro groups, in a coalition they call The Reality Campaign. Their first TV ad is sharp and to the point. There are some solid quotes in their press release:"The reality is that there's not a single home or business in America today powe

Obama's future fixed by Clinton's past?

Anne Applebaum thinks that Obama may have made 'a brilliant choice' in selecting Hillary Clinton for Secretary of State: [I]f she is truly as ambitious as she appears to be - and there is no reason to think otherwise - then Hillary does, in fact, have some incentive to be a good secretary of state And being a good secretary of state means, by definition, that she will have to carry out President Obama's foreign policy, not her husband's or her own. Any evidence of blatant disloyalty, not to me

Calligraphy for your Invitations

We've been getting a lot of requests in the studio from people looking to incorporate hand calligraphy into their invitation suite. Many times brides are designing the invites themselves or are working with their own stationer and do not want to commission calligraphy for the entire piece, but only a few words. It makes for a great effect, and can be used throughout the invitation suite as well as in the reception items. The hand-calligraphy adds a very classic look to a simple invitation, as dem

TCU rolls past Colorado

With the quick deadline, there wasn't time for quotes in the story that ran in the paper this morning, so here's an updated version with quotes from coach Jim Christian...     BOULDER, Colo. — With a little less than eight minutes to play Wednesday night at the Coors Events Center, the Colorado band’s tuba players ran onto the floor during a timeout and started playing loudly as they ran around the TCU team huddle. Any tactic was needed at that point to distract the Horned Frogs, but none o

AEC Round Table w. Jay Bhatt and Jim Lynch

Autodesk invited several AEC industry journalists and held a round table discussion. Representing Autodesk were Sr. VP Jay Bhatt and VP Jim Lynch. Following are highlights.  In bold are questions from journalists. In "quotes" are statements from Autodesk. Upcoming suites/bundles? "We are more focused on solutions rather than the kitchen sink approach [throwing a lot of different software in a box].  For example, we realize some of our leading customers are using are using Inventor [so that mi

Sizemore: A roundup of the good stuff

Unless you've been living under a rock the last couple of days, you probably know that Oregon's very own racketeer ballot initiative wingnut Bill Sizemore spent some time this week on the business end of the Multnomah County jail system. Sizemore was released yesterday and was joined by his wife. The two of them offered some especially choice quotes for Oregonian reporter Ed Walsh: He called his 24-hour detention "political," and his wife described him as "a political prisoner." Sizemore also

It really wasn't that bad, kind of in a way

"They must have been bored a little bit."    That was one of Tom Izzo's funnier quotes of the night, in a postgame presser that went pretty much as I expected. He was happy with most of what his team did in the first half, unforced turnovers excluded. He and Roy Williams both talked about MSU's dead legs -- in their fourth game in seven days -- as a primary reason MSU made 7 of 35 shots after the break.     Most of those shots were good shots.     The bottom line is, North Carolina is incredi

Amanda Beard Burned By Tanning Company

TMZ reports that Amanda Beard filed a lawsuit in L.A. County Superior Court claiming that a tanning salon company in Florida used her likeness without permission, posting her picture on their website "to create the impression that Beard endorses ProSun products". ProSun claims they took the photos of Beard at a charity event a few years ago -- and have the right to use them as they wish. Woah.  Hope they have good lawyers for that one.  Photo found at the ProSun website in which you can se

Links & Pictures: a blogger's favorite literary devices

You guys, I love having a girl. Not just for the clothes. Molly is SO much more responsive than Jack ever was. I feel "bonded" to her in a way I didn't with Jack until he was a big boy and could actually do stuff. I put quotes around bonded because who knows what that means. But she coos and smiles and talks and follows you and IT IS SO FUN. I had to work so hard for Jack smiles, but Molly's easy. Is it a girl thing? I have no idea. Tomorrow morning I should have something up at Parenting

United States "T-Bomb" Tossed by "Batman"

Shouldn't settlement consultants have an obligation to those they serve and the industry to achieve and maintain the highest level of financial literacy? Those that also hold a Series 7 and hold themselves out as "financial advisors" must surely be held to a greater standard. John S. Bat a settlement consultant with High Impact Structures, LLC, a firm which claims a business method patent pending for discounting collateral services in exchange for giving them structured settlement considerati

Shock Therapy

It’s official.  Later this month I’ll be undergoing ECT.   The website - http://ect.org - describes the procedure in this way:           It is unlike any other treatment in psychiatry, a therapy that still arouses such passionate controversy after 60 years that supporters and opponents cannot even agree on its name.             Proponents call it electroconvulsive therapy, or ECT. They say it is an unfairly maligned, poorly understood and remarkably effective treatment for intractable depression
