HOF Racing pegs T. Labonte, Raines to drive

Now how can this get any better?
My childhood hero Roger Staubach, my favorite all time quarterback Troy Aikman, “Texas” Terry Labonte and Tony Raines working together in my favorite sport, NASCAR!
There is no doubt that I have a new favorite Nascar Team, Hall of Fame Racing. Aikman and Staubach have …

Professional Sports

As a kid growing up I was a major NFL Football fan. My beloved Dallas Cowboys were as close to my heart as anything else in life. Over the years I never missed a game. In 1997 when I moved to Mississippi I purchased Direct TV for the sole purpose …

Rookie Tony Dorsett rips off franchise-best 206 yards

Editor's note: Each week, we'll take a look at classic moments in Texas Stadium history. Dec. 4, 1977 Cowboys 24, Philadelphia 14 Long before Emmitt Smith rewrote the Cowboys record book, Tony Dorsett authored the initial chapters. The dynamic rookie from Pittsburgh made a huge impact in 1977 as the Cowboys were marching toward Super Bowl XII. Against the Eagles, Dorsett rushed for a franchise-record 206 yards on 23 carries. The biggest play of the game was an 84-yard touchdown run on a pla

Not the sated and soothing sort of grogginess the media likes to blame on gluttonous tryptophan intake. Rather, a disconcerting unease that co

Topps Salutes the Troops With Trading Cards

I’m constantly in search of good stories about our troops. I’m even more interested in stories about name brand companies honoring the troops in some way. As a former collector of trading cards of all types - from basketball to Magic: The Gathering - so this sort of speaks to me. This story is from VINCENT M. MALLOZZI of the New York Times. Enjoy: This year’s Topps N.F.L. card set includes two Tomlinsons: LaDainian, a running back with the San Diego Chargers; and Wyat, a staff sergeant bas

Know your Cowboys T-Day historical stats

For the DMN's Thanksgiving Day package, I had to work up all the stats from previous Thanksgiving Day games. Big thanks to Scott Agulnek with Cowboys P.R. for the huge assist. While all the individiual stats are great, I wanted to know who holds the top career stats on turkey day. Please excuse the rough outline here. The Excel spreadsheet doesn't translate to this blog very well. Cowboys career rushing totals on Thanksgiving Player, Games, Carries, Yards, Avg., TD Emmitt Smith, 13, 270, 1

Football on Thanksgiving is an American tradition

Thanksgiving and football. They go together like Thanksgiving and turkey. Most of us grew up spending our Thanksgiving afternoons watching the NFL on television, when not going back for more helpings of turkey and all the fixings. The association between football and Thanksgiving has a long history, beginning in 1920. The old American Professional Football Association played six games on Thanksgiving of that year, starting a tradition which lasts to this day. The Detroit Lions will host thei

The 13 Best Gobble Gobble Games Ever

Thanksgiving is truly one of the greatest holidays of the year. Eat turkey. Watch football. Call it a day (without the turkey, you would call that a Sunday). The experience is heightened by the stressful half-week that precedes it and the timeless traditions we uphold, like taunting your cousins with the best end-zone dance. Some Thanksgiving traditions survive the test of time - like tryptophan the Lions putting you to sleep after dinner. Here are the Top 13 Thanksgiving Football Games:

A Note From The Heisman Trust

The Heisman Memorial Trophy, perhaps the most prestigious collegiate award has been awarded annually since 1935. Cowboys 35, 49ers 22: (Much to Our Chagrin) Terrell Owens Proves Himself Right

On the radio broadcast of last week’s game against San Francisco, Babe Laufenberg noted that Tony Romo had the same record as a starter in his first 33 starts as both Roger Staubach and Danny White. After the win on Sunday, Romo still has the same record in his first 34 starts as those two quarterbacks. The other quarterbacks with at least 34 career starts had fewer wins than the trio of Romo, Staubach, and White. Here are the summaries: Tony Romo 2006: 6-4 record 2007: 13-3 record 2008, f

Great Rivalry Developing between Texans and Jags

The Texans are looking forward to a big game next week on Monday Night Football.  The Jacksonville Jaguars come to town with the same losing record the Texans have at 4-7.  Make no mistake, this will be a great Monday Nighter.  These two teams play one another about as physcial as any combination in the NFL. Jacksonville lost yesterday to the Minnesota Vikings.  The Vikings whooped up on them in fairly easy fashion.  The final score was 30-12.  The Jaguars were out of the game before it starte

The 'Mad Bomber' strikes Redskins

Editor's note: Each week, we'll take a look at classic moments in Texas Stadium history. Nov. 28, 1974 Cowboys 24, Redskins 23 Thanksgiving week gives Cowboys fans a chance to relive one of the best comebacks in franchise history. It's a game many simply remember because of the "Mad Bomber." The Redskins knocked Cowboys starter Roger Staubach out of the game with 9:57 left in the third quarter. At the time, the Cowboys trailed 16-3. Coach Tom Landry summoned backup Clint Longley, who earned

Best Dallas Cowboys Quarterbacks of All Time

This is my list of top five best cowboys quarterbacks of all time. It factors in winning and passing statistics. 5. Danny White: Starting quarterback for the cowboys in the 80’s. He was in one Pro Bowl and a three times All-Pro selection. He had a 81.7 passer rating and 21,959 yards passing. He took the team to two playoff games but lost to the St. Louis Rams in both. 4. Don Merideth: Went to three Pro Bowls and a two time All-Pro selection. He also won the Bert Bell award in 1966 as player o

Best Cowboys Thanksgiving games

When the Cowboys host the Seattle Seahawks on Nov. 27, it will mark the last Thanksgiving Day game at Texas Stadium. The holiday tradition has produced plenty of noteworthy moments — both good and bad, from the Dallas point of view. The Mad Bomber. A state championship battle with the Oilers. Leon Lett. Jason Garrett. Here’s a totally arbitrary look at the most memorable Thanksgiving Day games at the stadium with the hole in the roof: 1974 — Dallas 24, Washington 23: With Roger Staubach sid

And If They Ever Archive the Ads, My Productive Life Will Definitely Be Over

As many of you are already aware, there was a major development in online archiving the other day, as Google announced that they’ll be making Life magazine’s photo archive available on the web. This is kinda like having the key to Ricko’s file cabinet — it’s a bottomless rabbit hole of spectacular imagery. Having already spent several hours clicking through the pics (which you can access through this portal), I can affirm that the photos — most of which were never published, and many more of

A Different Kind of Football "Card"

After hearing about the impact that the blown call at the end of the Chargers v. Steelers game had on bettors based on how it effected "the line", I was reminded of a novelty song that was released back in 1979 called "The Football Card". The song was done by Glenn Sutton and is about a guy who goes broke on NFL games. It is a fun song as it mentions just about every team as well as a number of players from the time like Roger Staubach, Bert Jones, Jim Zorn, Archie Manning, and Fran Tarkenton.U
