New Design

I finally settled on Bloglines for the Blogroll and Del.icio.us for my Links. I have been using Bloglines for over a year now as my main RSS Reader and have been extremely satisfied with it. I tired several other solutions but nothing gave me the ease of use and features …

Career changes: From PR to renewable advertising

I realize I had hinted at changes in my podcast and in previous blog entries, but I guess I never actually articulated it. A recent conversation with a friend brought that back to attention so I guess it is time to spill the beans, even if that is half a year late. I only made subtle changes to my Xing/LinkedIn profiles so that didn’t raise attention. The short version is that I moved from the PR team to the advertising unit of our agency, also taking on more internal organizational work. The l

The Upside of the Downturn...

...is incredible ideas. I've finally taken off my coat, 1 1/2 hours after arrival at the office. You see despite my best intentions, I couldn't resist diving right into all the incredible ideas delivered to me over the last 24 hours. (BTW, they come in automatically -- once I subscribe to the blogs, sites, etc I want updates from -- via my RSS reader. RSS readers are a Web-based, spam-free, quick and efficient way to read news you need. Once you take 3 minutes to watch this video, you'll be

Yearly Blog Evaluation

Last night, I gave my blog a little yearly evaluation of my own, I guess you could say. I was remembering all the way back to a little over a year ago, when I first began blogging. Remembering the reasons that I started blogging in the first place, and realized that I started blogging mainly just for myself. As an outlet. Some place safe to put down my inward thoughts, feelings, struggles, joys and memories. My written words that I’d be able to look back on years from now when my children are al

Keller: The Reason for God (Part I)

Posted by Reformed Reader on December 3, 2008 So far, the reviews have been dead on: this book is remarkable (Timothy Keller, The Reason for God [New York: Dutton, 2008]).  I’ll say more on it later.  For now, enjoy this blurb from pages 23-27. Keller responds to the ubiquitous atheist chorus: “If a good and powerful God exists, he would not allow pointless evil, but because there is much unjustifiable, pointless evil in the world, the traditional good and powerful God could not exist.” Keller

Six Free Skills and Applications to help you communicate with your students

Teaching using technology is easy to do badly. I probably use too much gadgetry in my presentations and interactions with my students, but that’s because I’m a nerd. Nonetheless, here are a few things I think are key in interacting with web aware students on a daily basis. I use this stuff because, a. I think the students get a better educational experience from it, b. the use of these tools exposes your work to many other interested parties across the world, and c., see above about me being a

Dazed and Spinning

urbanape: I’ve been trying really hard for a long time to get a little more centered in my life. I’ve read books, and tried many apps for dealing with it. I’ve got notebooks out the wazoo, but nothing really seems to make my life much clearer or allow me the space to focus. I have Severe Shiny Syndrome, and I really need to just drop a bunch of it. Media to watch, pictures and video to take, applications to write, websites to build, a job to maintain, podcasts to listen to (and make!), books

5 Ways That You Can Manage Change Just Like the Big 3 Automakers

The Big 3 - Shining Examples of Good Change Management Practices By now we’ve all seen video gems just like the one above, even if we were trying to go on a media fast. The CEOs of the Big 3 U.S. automakers - General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler - showed up in Washington on November 18 begging for $25 billion and had essentially no plan for how they were going to use that money to make their businesses sustainable. Unsurprisingly, they got a big, fat $0, but now they’re back (but will be arr

Retain Your Workforce by Improving Technology

Did you hear about this Accenture study released last month of 400 Millennial students and employees, ages 14 to 27? Would it surprise you to learn that the results point to a digital disconnect between employers and employees over the subject of outdated technology? Among the findings: 20% of millennials are unsatisfied with corporate technology Among technologies not currently provided at workplaces, 39% cited mobile phones, 19% open source software, 27% instant messaging, 12% online

The Midnight Poutine Podcast- Dec. 3-9, 2008

Did December sneak up on anyone else? No? Just me? Here I was enjoying fall and next thing I know, it's December and I'm freaking out about all the things I still have to do before 2008 turns into 2009. I blame it on the distractions going on in Ottawa over the last week. Coalition government or not, the Midnight Poutine podcast soldiers on, appealing to voters of all stripes and colours. Dreaming of a Green Christmas Pt. 3: Deck Your Halls with Sustainable Decor

If you asked my mother, she would tell you how excited I used to get about decorating our home for Christmas when I was little. Not only would I want to help trim the tree and hang the garland in the living room — I would also claim a bunch of ornaments and other decor to turn my room into a Christmas wonderland. I don’t get quite as excited these days, but many of you do. If you are one of those people, follow these tips to ensure that your Christmas excitement doesn’t put a strain on the env

When is the Best Time and Day to Publish a Blog Post

I’ve just updated my article, “When is the Best Time and Day to Post on Your Blog?” Originally published in June of 2006, once a year I update the post, continuing to evaluate when is the best time and day of the week to publish a post on your blog, helping you make your own decisions compared to my experiences and conclusions. My conclusions then still right true today: 1. It isn’t about when you post, it’s about when the most people visit your blog. You want new content released before they ar

Curbed Poll: From Flip to Foreclosure in Los Feliz

Welcome to this version of "New To Market," our look at a listing with a reader vote. Consider this an unscientific way to take the buying pulse of a wary public. Feedback and nominees to the tipline, please. Click the image above to view the full photogallery. A suspicious reader submitted this home after taking a look at the sales history. Yup, another foreclosure. According to the listing for this 1927 four-bedroom, two-bath house near Shakespeare Bridge in Los Feliz, there are exposed wo

Heroes Come in Two Flavours

Posted by Matt Langdon on December 3, 2008 There are two types of heroes.  Those who act and those who react. This was brought home to me by two recent Hero of the Year celebrations.  CNN showcased a set of people who have acted for the betterment of others.  These people wanted to create change and they’ve done so.  Whether that was going running with homeless people, rebuilding after Katrina, teaching impoverished children, or feeding the hungry, they acted. The Readers Digest featured heroes

Can Twitter be used as a business communications tool?

I am deeply ambivalent about Twitter.  When it first started to be widely used I found the signal to noise ratio to be way too heavily skewed towards noise to be worth my time to sort through the tweets.  In the past week Tim O’Reilly and Guy Kawasaki have written thoughtful posts about why they love twitter.  Here is a summary of their thinking: Tim O’Reilly likes the way Twitter works to establish ambient intimacy: If I’m interested in someone, I don’t have to ask their permission to foll

Chasing Romance

No, not me! I’ve found romance, thanks so much for asking. I’m very sure that no more chasing after romance will be at all necessary for the rest of my life. But, I find it rather interesting sometimes to watch others ponder and dissect as they make attempts to “get there.” I have to admit that among the most interesting efforts to chase romance are those of my sisters. — Why is it the sisters who get involved in this much more often than the brothers?  Of course, I have some notions about that

5 wish list items that would improve Zemanta service and their Windows Live Writer plugin

After the last post on automated related links in posts I mentioned liking the relevancy provided by the Zemanta service and promised to check into the service in greater detail. Bonus: Andraz the Zemanta CTO stopped by in the comment section and answered a few questions which piqued my curiosity further. I like seeing company executives and reps out responding to blog posts, being transparent about their service. Andraz promised more features were on the way as backed up by the active Zemanta

Nicole Kidman Goes See-through Under Cameras in Spain; Jessica Alba Campari Calendar Photos; etc

Nicole Kidman wore a black top to premiere her new epic film Australia at the Ritz Hotel in Madrid, Spain on December 3. But the mother of Sunday Rose "became almost completely transparent under the mercilessly bright camera flashes", obviously exposing her white strapless bra at the promotional photo call. A little bit awkward! Amy Winehouse's husband back to jail: Blake Fielder-Civil will be returning to prison for a alleged positive drugs test after breaking the bail condition of his early 27
