Never Forget !
In a lot of ways it already seems that we have forgotten what tragedies struck us at the hands of terrorists on September 11, 2001 (911).
Please do not forget. As we forget how critical these events were in our history, it will certainly change the course of our future. We need to be aware that those who attacked us, are still on the loose. We must continue to be concerned for our country’s security, even if it means we are “put out” a little with procedures at our airports, railways and ports.

The great game of hunting pirates
Piracy is nothing new, and pirates are not swashbuckling heroes. Unfortunately modern piracy has its roots in the same soil of past pirates: lack of opportunity on land and on the sea. But as much as we might sympathize with the poverty under which Somalis and others live in failed states, contemporary piracy is still a crime against people and property that must addressed. Could Somali pirates go back to "just fishing" if their traditional fishing waters are restored after realizing the gre
Afghanistan was not invaded
Letter to the Editor, Guelph Mercury Afghanistan was not invaded November 21, 2008 Mark Collins Dear Editor - Michael Keefer's letter to the editor ("We mustn't participate in 'criminal follies'," Nov. 19) says "the American invasion of Afghanistan was a direct violation of international law; the ensuing occupation is likewise illegal." Keefer is, despite being a university professor, singularly ill-informed. There was no "invasion" of Afghanistan. Before the fall of Kabul to the insurgent
Singapore General Election 2009 Likely?
In times of crisis with people gravitating towards the government for assistance in domestic concerns, it is usually a good time for ruling parties (from UK to Singapore) to call for a general election. With recent happenings in Singapore, is it worth the effort of the ruling party of Singapore to call for a general election? In this article, we examine the progress made by the government and the factors that might be for or against their favour in calling for one in the coming year. With a

Goldman Recants Its $200 a Barrel, "Super Spike" Call for Oil
Um, a bit late to come to that realization, don'tcha think? From Barron's (hat tip reader Michael): That ‘’super spike” in oil prices that Goldman insisted would lift crude to $200 a barrel ….? ....It never really turned out to be that prescient: instead of the 50% jump in oil that Goldman anticipated back in May, when it made the call with crude trading at $132, the price of a barrel never got more than 11% higher. And has since, of course, lost fully two-thirds of that price in the intervenin

Afghan girl says acid attack won’t stop her lessons
Another disgusting pathetic display of the way women are treated in islam. I recall a few months back, some imbecile liberal was commenting on how the Taliban were pro-education and claimed it was the Coalition Forces bombing the girls’ schools in Afghanistan. I wonder if that same liberal efftard will point the blame for this at us as well. KABUL (Reuters) - A victim of an acid attack on schoolgirls in Afghanistan said Saturday she was determined to stay in school and finish her education eve
FBI Increases Reward for Suspected Eco-Terrorists to $50K Each
Looking back on so-called “eco-terrorist” organizations like the now less-active Earth Liberation Front, their actions almost seem quaint as compared to the destruction wrought by the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, or what I like to call, ‘the real terrorism.’ But the Federal Bureau of Investigation doesn’t think the ELF’s actions were so quaint. On Wednesday the FBI announced it is increasing the reward for information leading to the arrest of four people accused of sabotage at
Goldman Backs Off Its Oil ?Super Spike? Theory
TURNS OUT, $200 CRUDE WAS TOO AGGRESSIVE A CALL That ‘’super spike” in oil prices that Goldman insisted would lift crude to $200 a barrel ….? Turned out to be a dagger that has pierced Goldman itself. It never really turned out to be that prescient: instead of the 50% jump in oil that Goldman anticipated back in May, when it made the call with crude trading at $132, the price of a barrel never got more than 11% higher. And has since, of course, lost fully two-thirds of that price in the interv
Update from Cindy…
September 11, 2001 You probably know that date. My beloved daughter turned 11 years old. It was her “Golden Birthday.” Everyone remembers Elisabeth’s birthday that year. In fact, our world will never be the same. Oh, don’t worry. I know the you don’t remember Elisabeth when you think of 9-11. Instead, you think of a very decided, calculated, cunning, intentional attack on the American people, its leadership, and its economy. I remember hearing the first responses– “Something must have gon
Joe Gentili, R.I.P.
I saw here that Joe Gentili's memorial service will be December 3,and wanted to express my regret at the passing of one of the great, mad mechanics of New York's old-fashioned, patronage-dominated Board of Elections. I wrote about Gentili, a Brooklyn Republican, back in January of 2003 in the late lamented New York Sun, when his tenure asthe agency's acting chief -- which began with the sudden heart attack of his friend and predecessor, Danny DeFranccesco, two days after 9/11. The photo above
The Nerve of Richard Clarke
The Nerve of Richard Clarke Abe Greenwald - 11.20.2008 - 10:39 AM I both agree and disagree with Richard Clarke: Obama’s election has taken the wind out of al Qaeda’s sails in much of the Islamic world because it demonstrates America’s renewed commitment to multiculturalism, human rights, and international law. It also proves to many that democracy can work and overcome ethnic, sectarian, or racial barriers. Obama’s commitment to withdraw from Iraq also takes away an al Qaeda propaganda te
Quotebook: NL MVP
I think the guys who voted, the baseball writers, know what they’re doing. – Albert Pujols Of course, it’s always nice to throw the electors a bone when you win. Which raises the inherent problem with writers, most of whom earn their living relying on access to players: Some voters are literally too close to the action in that their personal experience with players can color their vote. And it doesn’t always even matter whether or not someone is "a nice guy" or "a good interview." Sometime
Simple Changes, Number Two
Restore easy access to public buildings. After the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, public facilities all over the country were secured against the possibility that there would be a wave of attacks. Vehicular access to the State Capitol in Madison, Wisconsin was limited by the installation of bollards at every access point. Pedestrian traffic was funneled through a security checkpoint. The legitimate fear sparked proper precautions in 2001. Today, seven years after the fact, most of th
Are these the biggest moments in journalism-blogging history?
Here’s another one for that book I’m working on - I’m trying to think: what have been the most significant events in the history of journalism blogging? Here’s what I have so far (thanks Mark Jones and Nigel Barlow): 1998: The Drudge Report breaks the Monica Lewinsky story 2001: September 11 attacks: while news websites collapse under the global demand, a network of blogs pass on news and lists of survivors 2002: Trent Lott forced to resign after apparently pro-segregationist statements made
Lost In The Land Of Make-Believe
The election of Barack Obama has seemed to many people like a magic trick -- a wish come true, in some cases the wish of a lifetime. It's a result that seems to confirm their belief that America is still capable of pulling a rabbit out of a hat. Many seem to think that Obama himself can pull a rabbit out of a hat -- or multiple rabbits out of multiple hats -- whenever he wants to. But there's a nasty surprise in all the magic: Obama is the rabbit, and the trick is on us! In "The Era of Magic
Australia Guantanamo inmate breaks silence
CANBERRA – The only Guantanamo Bay inmate convicted of terrorism offences, Australian David Hicks, has broken his self-imposed silence, calling on police to relax stringent controls over his freedom since his release from jail. Hicks, 33, in a video released on Thursday, said a court-imposed order imposing a midnight-to-dawn curfew, restrictions on his travel and a requirement to report to police twice a week was blocking his return to normality. "I don't know what the future holds for me. The
OVERVIEW OF WORLD WAR II
New York on VE-Day World War II was the most destructive enterprise in human history. It is sobering to consider that more resources, material, and human lives (approximately 50 million dead) were expended on the war than on any other human activity. Indeed, this conflict was so all-encompassing that very few “side” wars took place simultaneously, the 1939–1940 Finnish-Soviet War (the Winter War) being one of the few exceptions. The debate over the origins of World War I had become something of
