Jackson Metro Area Starbucks Closings

I guess that tells a story within a story, it looks like 4 out of 5 Starbucks within a 10 mile or so radius are closing in the Jackson Metro area. I have been living here for 11 years and I am still amazed at how this city stays alive. Of course in a lot of ways, it doesn’t.
I have 2 teenagers and their list of things to do just keeps shrinking almost daily. About the only thing that they have to do is go to the movies or go swimming at Ross Barnett Reservoir. So let’s see, go see [...]

3 Estrogen - 1 Testosterone = Insanity

I am married with 2 teenage daughters. We have 2 female dogs and 2 female cats.
Is it any wonder I am a geek?
Oh yeah, there is one male Gerbil left, although we have not spent much time together.
Things that I can’t grasp.

Didn’t we just buy a 24 roll pack of toilet paper.
Why do they have to straighten their hair?
How much does makeup cost?
That bug is smaller than your fingernail, step on it!
How many pair of shoes is in that closet?
Start getting ready for a 7pm movie at 2pm.

Things that help me survive.

Headphones
Nascar
Guitar
Ukulele
Internet
Soduko
Poker

So, it is a fact, 3 Estrogen - 1 [...]

Numbers

The television show Numbers is one of my favorites. I guess that really shows my geek side. Although they push the envelope a little, numbers and math are definetly a major part of life.
I have been reflecting on numbers for this year, and how my age is starting to show.
31 - Years since I lost the vision in my right eye. I guess since it was at an early age is the reason it does not seem as critical as other things, although I am reminded everytime I open my eyes.
14 - Years since I did chemotherapy. And it amazes [...]

How to clear a room of teenagers

I have 2 teenagers, both girls, one is 13 and the other is 17. It seems there is always a guest in our house. It may be just one additional kid, or a whole house full, but, I am going to start taking their pictures and hanging them on the wall so I can remember who they are.
One thing I have learned is how to clear the room any time I want. 5 words, that’s all it takes. And here is how to accomplish this unbelievable feat.
Just get in the room with the kids. Listen carefully (but not obviously) to [...]

Mr. Mom

My lovely wife has been away for a few days, and I am soooo glad she is back !!
I will admit that my teenage daughters are not as hard to take care of as they once were, but, I know that my wife does so much on a daily basis to make our family run smoothly. I consider myself a pretty good man when it comes to helping around the house, however, keeping up with the kids and all their functions is a little overload on top of my daily work and duties.
My wife would call and start asking me [...]

Technology and the Gap

This morning I read about young people becoming sleep deprived (The Age:High-Tech link to teen sleep, health) the cause mentioned was technology. Many teenagers have computers and mobiles in their rooms now and spend a lot of their evening time social networking. I thought at the time, perhaps if there was more technology at school, they wouldn’t need to spend so much time using their toys when they should be sleeping. I remember a couple of years ago I had a student who was up all night playi

Tired teens at risk of high blood pressure + heart attack

New research has found that teenagers aged 13 to 16 who slept less than 6½ hours a night were up to three times more likely to have elevated blood pressure. The study looked at the sleeping patterns of 238 teenagers and found that the duration of sleep directly affected blood pressure. It appears that technology may play a role in sleep deprived teenagers with many texting, chatting online and listening to music all hours of the night. I’ve heard that some kids have their tv’s on all night
