Comcast

It is amazing to me that a company the size of Comcast can make such a mess of taking over another system.
If you had TimeWarner Roadrunner service and you live in an area where they are converting from RoadRunner high speed to Comcast high speed, are you in for a treat.
I have talked with several people who found their Internet connection just displaying a Comcast screen advising them to update the software to have their system switch over. The only problem is nothing on the screen worked.
I am already on Comcast high speed and so far there have been no [...]

Report: Spurned Yahoo Continuing Talks to Buy AOL

New York - With its hopes for a takeover by Microsoft (NASD: MSFT) all but evaporated, Yahoo (NASD: YHOO) continues to talk with media giant Time Warner (NYSE: TWX) about acquiring at least a portion of AOL, Bloomberg reported on Thursday. Citing two people familiar with the situation, the news service reported that executives from both sides continue to negotiate over terms of the potential deal, in which Yahoo would take over AOL's advertising business in exchange for a stake in the combined

Clearwire Shareholders Approve Xohm WiMax Deal

It’s official — with the approval of Clearwire shareholders today of the merger between Clearwire and Sprint’s Xohm business, only bureaucracy and paper-pushing stands in the way of the creation of the “New Clearwire” and its planned nationwide WiMax network. Well, paperwork and a whole lot of execution, marketing and work involved with running a new wireless data network. “Today, our shareholders have taken a transformative step toward enabling an entirely new mobile Internet experience for c

Time Warner Cable will stop billing for O.C. fire victims

Time Warner Cable sent a message this morning reminding me that it, too, offers call forwarding to victims of the latest Orange County fires (See Verizon and AT&T’s similar service). The feature, which forwards calls to the home phone to a cell phone or another number, is already included with the Time Warner phone service. If a customer never set this up, Time Warner will do it for you. Affected customers can call 888-TWCable to have a cable representative set up the service. Time Warner

Yang to step down at Yahoo!

Remember back in 2000 when AOL bought Time Warner? There was a lot of speculation at the time regarding the wisdom of AOL. Remember also that AOL, Amazon.com and Yahoo! were the titans of Wall Street at that time. They were worth billions and billions of dollars. Well, eight years later, AOL proves to be the smartest of the bunch. Amazon.com attached themselves to traditional stores like Target. It was Yahoo! that thought they were smart enough to keep the good times rolling. Yahoo stock trade

Yahoo’s Peter (Chernin) Principle–And Other CEO Choices

Obviously, the dream CEO for Yahoo is News Corp. President and COO Peter Chernin. And, no surprise, he is the No. 1 choice of most inside and outside Yahoo (YHOO) in the wake of the news late yesterday that current CEO and Co-Founder Jerry Yang is stepping down. And why not? Chernin has the right resume: Experienced at running large and complex organizations; savvier than most in media about the Internet; able to make the kinds of dramatic decisions needed; and, perhaps best of all, signaling

Cable Continues to Beat Telcos at the Broadband Game

Cable beat the telco carriers two to one for broadband adds in the third quarter of 2008, according to data out today from Leichtman Research Group. Of the 1.3 million total broadband adds in the quarter, 873,745 went to cable, as opposed to 425,868 who signed up for DSL service. We’ve pointed out that cable is gaining over DSL during the last few quarters, and even wondered what the telcos would do as DSL lines fell. Before we credit cable’s fast speeds compared with DSL for its advantage, ho

[itvt] Interview: Canoe Ventures CEO, David Verklin

[itvt]’s Tracy Swedlow caught up with David Verklin, CEO of Canoe Ventures–the company that is implementing Project Canoe, the US cable industry’s initiative to create a national unified platform for interactive and addressable advertising–at the NewTeeVee Conference in San Francisco last week. How Do Wireline Voice Services Measure up?

If you are like me, then you’re one of the many millions who have cut the cord with their landline and gone all wireless. However, that doesn’t mean people don’t want phones for their homes. Of course, for them, there are many options — some that use traditional telephony like AT&T and others like Vonage, which provide broadband-based voice service. It’s hard for folks to pick the one that is the best and most reliable. Audio Quality Rankings Comcast Digital Voice Verizon VoiceWing A

Does DirecTV hate puppies?

Does DirecTV hate puppies? What is the worse thing you can say about a competitor? Or anyone for that matter? Maybe the short commercial below is it. Apparently not seeing the humor, the legal department at DirecTV fired off a quick two page cease-and-desist letter to Time Warner Cable. Posted by Jan on November 16, 2008 |

Carl Icahn-ic: Shareholder Activist Talks About His Quest to Improve Boardrooms (Are You Listening, Yahoo?)

What does Carl Icahn, the billionaire activist shareholder who waged war on Yahoo and now sits on its board, really think? “…I really think current boards and managements are killing the country,” he said in an interview published Friday in The Wall Street Journal’s Opinion Journal. “I’ll tell you why, ’cause I’ve lived it. I’m on a lot of boards, I see how ineffectual they are.” While he was talking about the state of American management in general and not Yahoo in particular, it’s worth r

Yahoo Layoffs Set for December 10 (And, No, Jerry Yang Is Not Leaving Too)

While they’re not as significant as the potential 6,000 layoffs at Sun Microsystems (JAVA) announced earlier today, several sources at Yahoo said that the previously announced layoffs at the Internet giant are set to take effect on Dec. 10. Yahoo (YHOO) confirmed it would cut its workforce by “at least” 10 percent of its global workforce–or about 1,400 to 1,500–on Oct. 21, as part of its third-quarter earnings call. But it did not give an exact date for the action. That 10 percent figure i
