Nascar Nap
If you ask me, I will tell you I watch Nascar every week. If you ask my wife, she will tell you I take a Nap every week when Nascar is on. Just because I watch some of the race with my eyes closed does not mean I do not know what is going on, and having a DVR doesn’t hurt either.
I will say I was wide awake to see Jeff Gordon bump Matt Kenseth right off the track at the USG Sheetrock 400 with a few laps to go. Oh well, I guess Nascar officials where watching with [...]

TiVo Apparently Doing Well In Australia
An article in today’s Australian IT which is mainly about high HDTV sales from retailer Harvey Norman and the boost from the Olympics contains a little tidbit about TiVo in Australia which has to put a smile on the faces of TiVo and Seven Network. [Gerry Harvey] also revealed the TiVo digital recording device brought to Australia by the Seven Network had been a surprise hit. Seven launched TiVo as a direct free-to-air counter to Foxtel’s IQ device and gave Harvey Norman exclusive rights to se

The Long Tail in My LR
Fried from a long day, then with a client until 11:00, much-needed couch time. Overwhelmed myself with Olympic opening ceremony last night, couldn’t take more. Then remembered - wasn’t Tivo about to grow a YouTube gland? Checked in and sure enough, a bazillion new vids were there, waiting to be inhaled. As expected, video quality isn’t great blown up to HDTV size, and audio is sometimes out of sync with the video, but the range of human experience at your fingertips is mind blowing. Started wi
Sony and Roku Try To Join TV to Web, But No Merger Yet
Perhaps the biggest disconnect in the digital landscape today is between the Internet and the TV set. Consumers have been buying big, new high-definition TVs in large numbers and, separately, are watching more and more video from online sources like YouTube, Hulu and iTunes. But the two trends have yet to merge. Despite the efforts of big names like Microsoft (MSFT), Apple (AAPL) and TiVo (TIVO), relatively few people are watching Internet video on their shiny new sets. Now, two more set-
First Impressions Of The Australian TiVo
An Australian friend of mine, Matt, just picked up a TiVo and he’s blogged his first impressions. It sounds like they have some of the same guide data issues we have in the states, with repeats not always being so flagged. Though it is odd that other guides, like IceTV and even Yahoo7 get it right - especially when Yahoo7 is the online scheduling partner for TiVo Australia. So hopefully they can sort that out in time. Australian networks are far, far worse than US networks when it comes to sti
Ben Stiller Must Be A Gizmodo Fan...
I was fortunate enough to see an advanced screening of Tropic Thunder last night, and it was fantastic. The one thing that really stood out for me though was that Writer/Director/Actor Ben Stiller must be a Gizmodo fan - there were gadget references everywhere. Without spoiling too much, let's just say that TiVo plays a big part, as do satellite phones and private jets. Plus there's a rather lengthy explanation on why Blu-ray won the format war (yep - porn and the PS3), which you wouldn't norm
Bonus Feature In TiVo 9.4 - HME Video Streaming
Since the TiVo 9.4 update enabled YouTube support a few weeks ago, I’ve been hoping that the ability to stream video would be extended to HME. Since the entire YouTube interface on TiVo is implemented with HME, using the HME toolkit internal to TiVo (probably with features first implemented for the OCAP development work), it makes sense that it would be possible to support video generically through HME. And the developer community did not disappoint, they’ve figured out how to support video pl
